Drinking tea bad for you?

Is drinking tea bad for you?

I must get through about 3-4 cups of tea a day, maybe even 5 or 6!! and I’m wondering if this is a bit of a pattern I need to change. Does it dehydrate you? Raise cholesterol? Am I overthinking this? Haha

OP posts:

I use skimmed milk and decaf - surely then it's basically just flavoured water 😂 I hope not OP, 5 cups is standard for me.

ClassicBBQ · 02/12/2025 14:22

I work in a care home and most of my residents survive on just tea and would probably have a tea IV if they could! Some are nearing 100, so I don't think it's that harmful.

CandyCayne · 02/12/2025 14:23

Well Google says no, not particularly 🤷‍♂️

It’s healthy if you drink it black apparently. My aunt has around 15-20 cups of bold k tea a day. If you need to find her just find the nearest loo!

Whatsthatsheila · 02/12/2025 14:26

My urologist is adamant it’s too blame for my shitty OA bladder. I pointed out that When I give up tea and drink more water I wee more. Apparently it needs 3 weeks to leave my system. That’s depressing. I’ll stick with Tena ladies

Devilsmommy · 02/12/2025 14:27

Well I drink 25-30 teas and coffees a day so I'd imagine 4 cups is absolutely fine 😂

landlordhell · 02/12/2025 14:30

Depends if you add sugar I guess. I drink several cups of green tea a day and it’s supposed to be very good for you. Even black tea is good. They contain flavonoids. Google it.

SoManyTshirts · 02/12/2025 14:56

I’ve read that tea impacts iron absorption and friend has been told to restrict her intake. I don’t think I can - it’s all I drink!

CiderWithRosie1972 · 02/12/2025 14:57

Nonsense! I drink about 20 mugs of tea a day.

Reification · 02/12/2025 15:02

I drink mainline large mugs of tea from the time I get home from work until I go to bed. I qualified for an over 50s check-up at work this year and although I'm overweight - which won't be down to the tea - all my blood tests came back way better than average for my age somehow (the doctor actually looked rather insultingly surprised 😂). So that anecdata conclusively proves tea is good for you, obviously...

Are you perimenopausal? An increasingly overactive bladder (24/7) and night sweats were my most debilitating symptoms aside from new to me anxiety and insomnia - HRT have largely eliminated the overactive bladder and night sweats and reduced the other symptoms. Worth a try if you're not already on it and are late 30s or over.

I'm up twice a night usually unless I'm having a night of insomnia. And before anyone says that my insomnia is due to the drinks, no it's not. I've had severe insomnia since I was a young teenager. I think my body isn't affected anymore by caffeine tbh. I eat a normal amount of food.

I’ve heard it’s good for you but then people say it’s hydrating and I know the days I don’t drink water and drink more tea I’m definitely not hydrated, I can feel it and my skin dries out

Have you tried cutting it out from the afternoon though? I thought I had insomnia until I cut out my last two cups of tea and stopped screens at 6. Slept amazingly. When I drank my evening cup of tea again woke up nightly

caringcarer · 02/12/2025 15:43

I have a whole pot of tea to myself 3 times a day as DH is a coffee drinker. I do have decaf and skimmed milk though and no sugar. I'm not giving up my tea!

You must be drinking more water in volume than tea . Tea is just flavoured hot water so your post doesn’t make sense

Desk job very close to a little kitchen!

Summerlovin24 · 02/12/2025 15:53

Love tea
Try and have some decaf in there too
I was totally addicted to the caffeine. Took a week of headaches to wean off

DottyLottieLou · 02/12/2025 15:57
