Drinking tea bad for you?

Is drinking tea bad for you?

I must get through about 3-4 cups of tea a day, maybe even 5 or 6!! and I’m wondering if this is a bit of a pattern I need to change. Does it dehydrate you? Raise cholesterol? Am I overthinking this? Haha

@PeonyPatch He was just talking from a bladder POV so wanted all caffeine eliminated to reduce and prevent further irritation and inflammation. I guess it depends on how healthy your bladder is currently.

How does anyone sleep after the amounts discussed here on too grounds, one the caffeine and two the sheer amounts of liquid. I personally can’t drink anything caffeinated after 2pm and no more than 1 mug cafetière coffee, or two mugs black tea in the morning or my sleep is disrupted

Exactly what @bodyofproof said. Caffeine doesn't affect me in the slightest. I guess you build a tolerance to it so it really is no different to drinking water or juice

I'm up twice a night usually unless I'm having a night of insomnia. And before anyone says that my insomnia is due to the drinks, no it's not. I've had severe insomnia since I was a young teenager. I think my body isn't affected anymore by caffeine tbh. I eat a normal amount of food.

Have you tried cutting it out from the afternoon though? I thought I had insomnia until I cut out my last two cups of tea and stopped screens at 6. Slept amazingly. When I drank my evening cup of tea again woke up nightly

I've tried absolutely everything to try and cure my insomnia and nothing works. I'm used to it now so I just roll with it. And at least I still get to enjoy my before bed cuppa😁

Well there were five of us when I grew up and we used a catering teapot 😂

HelloCharming · 02/12/2025 16:59

I probably drink about 10 to 12 cups of tea a day (mostly decaf) - sometimes more - oh if I'm honest it's about 15. I like tea.

I don't drink strong tea so nowhere near 3 minutes at all to brew 😂 though I guess I do spend a decent portion of the day making tea/coffee 😄

Bet it helps you get your steps in going and to and from the kettle! Which would be a definite health benefit 😆

DatingDinosaur · 02/12/2025 17:07

It contradicts itself! The tannins in tea are good for your heart. But the caffeine in it is a stimulant so can raise blood pressure. But it's a diuretic so it makes your kidneys work harder to get rid of the fluid which helps protect against fluid retention.

My GP suggested no more than 4 cups of caffeinated drinks a day and to drink more water. Only problem with that is, I wee more. If I don't drink tea or coffee at all, I don't wee as much, I guess because the diuretic element of tea isn't there. If I only drink tea or coffee I end up constipated.

It's yet another "everything in moderation" thing.

Never thought of it that way but I'm going to now😂 it's definitely an exercise I can get behind😁

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/12/2025 17:15

So far since waking up I’ve had 5 coffees (not instant) and 9 cups of tea. I’m still alive.

Mind you I pee like a horse. At least my kidneys are well flushed.

I work in a care home and most of my residents survive on just tea and would probably have a tea IV if they could! Some are nearing 100, so I don't think it's that harmful.

😂

So I drink it with semi skimmed milk, no sugar. Did not know it can affect iron absorption and I do tend to be iron deficient 😩😳

Tea impedes the body’s ability to absorb iron. Avoid tea an hour before and an hour after meals and it will make such a difference to your iron levels. I have the opposite problem of too much iron and 4 cups of tea per day around meal times works miracles at keeping my iron levels down.

Apparently people with ADHD are much more tolerant to caffeine than people who don’t have ADHD.

I don’t know if I have ADHD but am awaiting an assessment- and I do tolerate caffeine very well.
I drink lots of tea- probably 4-8 cups a day. I have my last one right before I go to bed and I fall asleep instantly. I do have to get up for a wee at about 2am but I sleep very well either side of that.

Ah, thank you @PoppyFleur

i absolutely survive on tea in the winter, as it keeps me warm! I try to limit to 1 coffee a day

I thought that was just down to them using it to self medicate their ADHD, but I've a friend with the sleepy reaction to caffeine who'd have an energy drink to nap.

While I drink gallons of tea, I once forgot about caffeine and consumed 2 big proper coffees and went from buzzy to a jittery and anxious mess and had to go to bed till it passed 🙈 so now stick to the decaf coffee. Thankfully not had that reaction to stimulant meds they make me feel calmer, but it has cut back my tea intake.

No,it’s many of the elderly people’s fave drink lol and known so many well into their 80’s-90’s drink plenty of tea 🙈

I think it only happens if you actually drink tea with a meal.

If you want to improve iron absorption, then when eating iron-rich foods, have something with vitamin C at the same time.

Are you perimenopausal? An increasingly overactive bladder (24/7) and night sweats were my most debilitating symptoms aside from new to me anxiety and insomnia - HRT have largely eliminated the overactive bladder and night sweats and reduced the other symptoms. Worth a try if you're not already on it and are late 30s or over.

ive always had it. I also pointed out that I didn’t drink tea when I was a child but as with all doctors these days - it’s the easy route to find something the patient is doing wrong and then blame that, - they chucked some pills at me which stopped working after 6months. I’m on a self directed reassessment so I’m gonna ring for a new appt to rediscuss. But Local HRT is something I’m thinking of asking for.

smallglassbottle · 02/12/2025 18:27

I can't drink it as it gives me overactive bladder too. I'm convinced it's led to interstitial cystitis because there are lots of other fluids I can't tolerate now either. I can only drink redbush tea now. It's the tannins in tea that cause the irritation.
