Least impressive universities?

Hfstjsufysyfykdhoxg · 22/11/2025 17:29

If you could reject three from this list based PURELY on how impressive they look on your CV and no other reason, which would you reject, leaving a list of five?

Durham
York
Newcastle
Liverpool
Manchester
Liverpool
Sheffield
Leeds

Thank you

I’d never be so snobby. Surely there are far more important reasons to choose a particular university and course.

I would go Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool.

None for that reason.

Of course that's not the only reason it's all hypothetical

Probably Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds. But they’re all good universities

verycloakanddaggers · 22/11/2025 17:34

To my eyes your hypothetical question doesn't make sense.

ExquisiteDresses · 22/11/2025 17:35

None of them, it makes no sense to me

mismomary · 22/11/2025 17:35

Sheffield, Liverpool

PinkJoy55 · 22/11/2025 17:35

None - a degree is a degree.

NotLookedYet · 22/11/2025 17:35

If it has to be at all, you need to look at particular subjects/degrees.

Newcastle is well-renowned for dentistry, for instance.

Which degree @Hfstjsufysyfykdhoxg?

Tighteningmybelt · 22/11/2025 17:36

Apart from Durham bring slight ahead imo the others are all the same level.

Beepbird · 22/11/2025 17:36

It depends on what subject the degree or postgrad qualification is in. A university will often have a different reputation for different courses.

ramonaquimby · 22/11/2025 17:37

Weird
quite a few of these are RG unis

NorWouldI · 22/11/2025 17:38

It's a silly question, though. You choose a university primarily on the specific degree programme you are interested in. So rejecting a university out of hand as 'unimpressive' without any further context is completely meaningless. Some universities which are not highly ranked in general have some incredibly well-thought-of degree programmes which, if you're looking for work in a specific field afterwards would be favourably regarded.

rafeal · 22/11/2025 17:39

There’s been quite a change in recruitment and the name of the university really isn’t as important as it used to be, certainly within this listed. Actual achievements and experience and ability to stand out in the recruitment process are way more important. The University itself doesn’t make you stand out any more. There are huge numbers from each of these universities.

Tamfs · 22/11/2025 17:39

Depends on the course, and personally I would also be very interested in student wellbeing support services.

BowlyLarr · 22/11/2025 17:40

I’d say the top 5 from your list would be

  1. Durham
  2. York
  3. Manchester
  4. Leeds
  5. Newcastle

It does vary a bit by subject though.

Arlanymor · 22/11/2025 17:42

People don't read CVs in that way - it's a ridiculously antiquated way of thinking.

KittyEckersley · 22/11/2025 17:43

I’d get rid of Liverpool because it’s on the list twice.

ThePeachHiker · 22/11/2025 17:43

If it’s engineering then my top choices would be Sheffield then Liverpool. Sheffield is renowned for its engineering course. You really need to specify the course

Andregroup · 22/11/2025 17:44

I'd get rid of York and Liverpool. Then either Manchester or Leeds, depending on the course.

BauhausOfEliott · 22/11/2025 17:45

My own employer redacts this information from job applications, so when I select which applicants to interview I have no idea where they went to university, only what degree they have.

It’s never stopped me from building a really good team and therefore if I worked somewhere again where they share that information, I’d pay zero attention to it. Meaningless.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 22/11/2025 17:45

They are all solid universities. Some will be better than others for certain courses so it’s not simple to remove any of them. Unless, of course, you’re a massive snob.

Drillsky · 22/11/2025 17:45

Surely not totally hypothetical if you are wanting a list of 5!

Look at other factors. This is a daft criterion on which to choose between these unis.

I'd strike out one of the Liverpools though, just to show attention to detail, which is way more important than Leeds Vs Sheffield on a CV.

Breadcat24 · 22/11/2025 17:46

depends on the school and the course
You will get very different ranking for chemical engineering for example at Sheffield versus Liverpool
And again different ranking for English with Durham ranking higher than Leeds
If you are just going for snob value the original "redbrick" were Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield
