What's the best mistake you've made on song lyrics
I'm 40 and just realised I have been singing "and a parsnip in a pear tree"!!
Why did no-one ever correct me on this and how did they keep a straight face? 🤣

For about 30 years I used to think the Cadbury’s fudge advert was: “…. It’s full of peppery goodness and very small and neat”. I spent years wondering how and why it was peppery fudge.

Me too. It didn't enter my head that fudge wouldn't be peppery!

Lord of the Dance terrified me as a child as I thought it was "And I'll eat you all in the dance said he". I'd visions of this man going around gobbling up little children.

I thought it was "I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot him dead you see". No thought that it made no sense at all.

Shaggy it wasn’t me, I’ve been singing cup caking on the bathroom floor. always thought it didn’t make sense.

the words are Banging on the bathroom floor

Only found out this year that it was wrong!! For 25 years I’ve got it wrong 🫣

I thought the same re I Shot the Sheriff .

I remember hearing St Elmo's Fire and wondering what "centre most higher" meant. Those weren't the words. He was singing the song title.

Massive Attack's Teardrop I thought was "love, love isn't fair, love is a doomy word." The actual words are "love, love is a verb, love is a doing word" which is much nicer.

Empire State of Mind by Jayz and Alicua Keyes.

It's not concrete jungle, wet dreams and makeup apparently..

Inlimboin50s · 04/12/2025 21:10

I've always sang ' I love the king,lalalalalala
Recently found out it was alive and kicking.' Even though that was the song title I didn't twig

DH’s one goes back to his childhood with country & western loving parents.

“You picked a fine time to leave me Lucilllle
Four hundred children and a crop in the field”

Marvelettesyouremyremedy · 04/12/2025 21:44

Glad I wasn't the only one'400 hundred children'

Yes me too! It was only when I was married and asked DH when on earth peppery goodness meant that I realised I had it wrong for so long! He thought I was insane!

I was sick and tired of everything, when I called you last night from Tesco.... I just thought she really hated shopping, which I can definitely sympathise with.

Classiccar1 · 04/12/2025 22:00

Here's an oldie for you, the Carpenters "All you get from love is a love song" it sounds like she is singing "the best love songs are written with a broken arm", it's actually broken heart.

Classiccar1 · 04/12/2025 22:04

Also "Sue Lawley”. Correct lyric: “So lonely” from The Police’s ‘So Lonely’.

AndreaMarvell · 05/12/2025 00:23

I heard Me Ears Are Alight by Desmond Dekker on my drive honme from the pub.

Woahbodyforrrrm · 05/12/2025 00:35

For years me, my DH and my best friend got the lyrics for Madcon’s Beggin you, so far wrong!

Me: Maggie, Maggie Moo, put your loving hand out baby
DH: Daddy, Daddy cool, put your loving hand out baby
Friend: Peggy, Peggy Sue, put your loving hand out baby

I’m not sure which one was more ridiculous when you think about them as lyrics 😂

It was years and years before I discovered he was singing, begging, begging you…

Better than. Four hungry children and a crap in the field.

Hotel California: Warm smell of policemen rising up through the air

PennywisePoundFoolish · 05/12/2025 15:37

Eminem/Rihanna Monster
"And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy
Well, that's not fair"
Is actually "well, that's nothing"

My longstanding one is Tracy Chapman Fast Car
"City Lights lay out before us
Your arms and legs wrapped round my shoulders"
Is actually
"And your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder"

Toto's Africa - "There nothing that a hundred men on Mars will ever do"

I always thought that was the line! I just had to look it up!

BastardtheCat · 07/12/2025 08:35

“I need to pee myself” instead of ‘ I need to be myself’ - first line of Oasis’s Supersonic.

This one cracks my kids up. The proper lyrics are

“when the clock strikes 12 we’ll do our dance”

but even knowing that is still sounds like

“when the clock strikes 12 we’ll poo our pants!”

Slade are singing:

Did your granny always tell you, put the old socks on the bed 🎅🎅

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 25/12/2025 09:37

Simply red - Stars
The line "I feel you I hope you comprehend"
I used to think it was "I feeeeel love I hope you've combed your hair"
I used to think why does he want her to have nicely smooth hair? Is he taking her somewhere nice?

And the Song "Bette Davies eyes" was "she's got better days aside"
