Son got his lovely curls cut off will they grow back?

So my husband took my son for a haircut on Saturday and the barber has cut it all off. Hes barely got a curl left just waves. He had strong tight curls.

I'm worried that's them gone for good. Hes only 3 and half. I'm just gutted and so upset about it. I dont know what my husband said when he took him in but I only wanted it to be tidied up. I'm so gutted 😢 before and after picture attached

My daughter lost her curls at that age, sorry to day- barely a wave now. But it's not the end of the world if he does, he's just not a baby any more- I'm sorry, I know that's sometimes a hard jump for us parents.

LeavesTrees · 17/11/2025 10:23

My child permanently lost their curls with a shorter haircut at aged 3. I was gutted too.

CatsorDogsrule · 17/11/2025 10:25

Yes, they're probably gone now. Happened to mine too. Try to embrace the new look.

I am 78 and have always had curly hair even when my hair has been cut short. Do not worry x

RuncibleSpoons · 17/11/2025 10:30

It depends on whether he has curly hair, which it does look like to me. Do either of you have curls?

I’m curly and only one of our sons got them.

DustyMaiden · 17/11/2025 10:32

My DD still has curls aged 39.
my DH has short hair because he doesn’t like his curls aged 62.

HearMeOutt · 17/11/2025 10:33

If they don’t grow back then his hair isn’t curly. You can’t keep it long forever. I find that that wispy, wavy, fine toddler hair can get very messy and knotted quickly and cutting it helps.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/11/2025 10:36

His hair still looks pretty curly to me if I was asked to describe it, there's a lot of volume and lift there!

My son developed curls when he was about 11. We don't know how our why but he's had corkscrew curls ever since. He doesn't like it, he wants to look 'sharp', but we get what we're given 🤷

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango1 · 17/11/2025 10:36

Gutted and so upset seems a bit of a strong reaction. It is hair, it will grow back curly or not he is still the same child.

lolly427 · 17/11/2025 10:37

I think his new hair cut is really lovely. I've known a few but I don't understand mums who are obsessed with their child's hair/curls, he's gorgeous OP.

DappledThings · 17/11/2025 10:39

He barely looks different, just tidier. Hair is still a nice length. I've never understood the emotional attachment to baby hair.

LeavesTrees · 17/11/2025 10:42

Now the pictures have loaded I think those curls are still there. When my son had his hair cut I could see the curls were gone because what was left was flat and straight. I don’t think your son will lose his.

Bbq1 · 17/11/2025 10:43

I've always had curls and adult son has long curly hair (mid back) and when I kept it shorter as a child, there wasn't a curl in sight. The minute it grew, his curls returned. I have had cancer twice and completely lost all of my hair each time, but I'm glad to say that each time, my curls have literally bounced back! Op, your son's curly hair will grow and his curls will grow back.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 17/11/2025 10:50

Ignore all the 'I don't understand' posts. That's fine, they don't understand how you feel, doesn't mean it's wrong you do feel like that!

as someone else said, your DS looks like he has curly hair, that they weren't just baby hair curl. So hopefully they'll come back, but I'd expect them to look quite different as it'll be stronger hair.

Personally I'd take him somewhere else though.

Givethegift · 17/11/2025 10:52

How angry did you get at your husband?!

SophiaSW1 · 17/11/2025 10:54

My daughter’s never came back after her first cut and hers were ringlets

TonTonMacoute · 17/11/2025 10:57

The new cut looks sweet! His hair still looks pretty curly to me. My DSs hair was always dead straight, mine is curly.

KelB24 · 17/11/2025 11:18

Thanks everyone. It was getting too long and messy and hard to maintain. I just wanted it tidied up its not his first haircut and they've always come back in tidier and curlier every time he's had a cut and this time it's been cut so short.

I just hope they come back. No one else has curly hair so not sure where he gets them from which makes me wonder if they were just baby curls

I think he genuinely has curly hair. At least it clearly has some texture.

It looks like my son's hair, which is wavy when short and gets proper curly when it grows longer. He's 8 now and usually has it quite short so we don't see the curls, but his hair still doesn't lie like straight hair.

NewCushions · 17/11/2025 11:21

Cutting hair doesn't make the curls go away. Lots of children grow out of the curlier hair they have as babies and it becomes more wavy. That's normal. DD has very curly hair but it's still not as curly as it was when she was tiny!

His still looks fairly curly/wavy to me so I wouldn't be surprised if it stays quite curly and wavy. But honestly, it's unlikely he'll like it until possibly he's a musican in his early 20s! Grin

Audhumla · 17/11/2025 11:22

We parents don't have curly hair either but what I didn't know until I was told was that my grandfather apparently had the same hair texture, wavy when short but curly when longer. I only saw him with very short hair so it wasn't something that occurred to me until I was talking about DS' hair with my mum!

Dollymylove · 17/11/2025 11:33

That looks lovely, a proper little boy haircut. It still looks quite wavy.
When my son was about 2 he had a lovely halo of golden curls. I decided he needed a haircut so I snipped off all his curls while he was asleep. My mother was horrified 🤣 The curls didnt grow back but he still has quite thick wavy hair, in his 30s

OnLockdown · 17/11/2025 11:33

If his hair is curly, the curls will come back once it grows a bit.

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 17/11/2025 11:48

My eldest had curls when he was small. His first haircut left me really disappointed because his hair looked almost completely straight. Maybe a slight bounce rather than match straight, but all the same. When it grew, it became very wavy with some curls and that is how it has stayed. He’s 17 now and keeps it fairly long. But any time he has had it cut short, it looks like straight hair because his wave/curl pattern doesn’t start until a bit further down. His hair is black and shiny and wavy. I would kill for it😅

Franpie · 17/11/2025 11:51

Ah, I get you but they had to come off eventually. My DS had blonde ringlets as a toddler. I loved them, my DH didn’t. They did make him look like a gorgeous little girl to be fair. I kept them as long as possible but when he started school at 4 he came home and said he wanted his hair to be like all the other boys ☹️
