Talk me into watching “Slow Horses”

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 31/10/2025 19:39

Just that really…

I don’t like spy based fiction, or anything where the producer tries to inject too much clever humour into the script I also don’t like any kind of odyssey or unreal plots or characters. I love dark, gritty plots with real life complex characters and social demographics.

But everyone has said “Yes but you will still LOVE slow horses” 😅

Will I and should I give it a go or should I stick to my guns and demand avoidance!!

The synopsis is not my thing at all. However I love it . Series3 I think my fav. Go on risk it - it’s so worth it !

jjeoreo · 31/10/2025 22:26

Just finished Latest series tonight
I'm not really a tv person but we LOVE this
Please give it a go and update us

moneyadviceplease · 31/10/2025 22:26

It is probably one of the absolute best things on Tv, like, ever. Gary old man is beyond amazing

celandiney · 31/10/2025 22:26

It's just so good.
It's not comedy funny - it's funny in the way that life can be sometimes dark and gritty and serious and intense - and funny. And then intense again...
Yes,but honestly you will still LOVE Slow Horses.

Ketryne · 31/10/2025 22:31

I know you said ‘talk me into it’, not out, but I had similar concerns and decided after 2 episodes that it just wasn’t for me. The tone was so oddly mismatched that the humour felt self conscious. The actors are obviously excellent but the set up just felt a bit hammy. I’m sure it settled in but I couldn’t care enough.

Other things I abandoned for similar reasons - Killing Eve, Dept Q, and Black Doves.

Not sure if that’s helpful, but I think sometimes it’s ok to just know something isn’t going to work for you and not waste your time.

CalmShaker · 31/10/2025 22:32

Never heard of it before but I must say, if ever there was a film title to put me off from the start

FancyCatSlave · 31/10/2025 22:33

Why is it such a big decision? Just put it on and if you hate it, switch it off.

I absolutely love it but it’s not a marriage commitment, it’s barely an hour.

Catpiece · 31/10/2025 22:53

Is it as good as Waking the Dead? I know they’re not spies but it can be dark with humour

Tiredofwhataboutery · 31/10/2025 22:54

Frynye · 31/10/2025 19:41

It’s very different. It’s gritty and funny. I didn’t expect to enjoy it but I do

Me too. It’s not my thing but I really loved it especially the earlier ones.

Tv show rather than a film but they are called slow horses as they work at Slough house where they send the disgraced / disappointing MI5 agents.

What put you off initially watching it?

Can’t always trust my mum’s judgement! She can recommend some shite too!

ThroughTheRedDoor · 01/11/2025 02:38

Its the only show with smellvision. I swear you can smell him.

Enrichetta · 01/11/2025 02:42

Gary Oldman
Kristin Scott Thomas

😎

Giggorata · 01/11/2025 03:46

As above, excellent cast, premise and script.
I didn't have a subscription to Apple TV but saw one episode free and was in.

You may or may not like it but it's not a huge commitment to watch a couple of episodes.

It’s much better than Department Q and Black Doves, IMO. I didn’t particularly like either of those (especially Dept Q). I haven’t watched Killing Eve, so can’t compare.

OP it’s one of the best things on TV. Give it a go. The worst that can happen is you spend a couple of hours watching something you don’t like - as the kids say, it’s not that deep.

MadeUpBrave · 01/11/2025 04:15

I tried the first episode recently. Just debating whether to get a subscription for this.
My biggest problem is I'm from Slough. Every time they chuck 'Slough' in as short hand for dry humour, it sets off a stream of defensive debate. Might need to turn it into a drinking game.

NorthXNorthWest · 01/11/2025 08:53

It's well written, messy, unexpected and all the characters are flawed in an interesting way - add Intrigue, twists and turns...

The question you need to ask, is 'why am I waiting'

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/11/2025 09:00

I can’t stand it, despite trying several times as DH loves it.

Lanva · 01/11/2025 09:03

I liked season 1 and 2 and then I gave up as it turned into a boring shootemup.

Starlight7080 · 01/11/2025 09:04

The point is it is real life gritty characters with complex back stories/life's.
Its not funny its more a case that they are great at dark humour/sarcasm.

The cast is brilliant.
I didnt expect to like it so much but its easily one of my favourite shows .

Namechangedforthis25 · 01/11/2025 09:10

Don’t think it’s a real commitment - just watch it and see if you like it

I think it’s one of the most unique, cleverest, entertaining programmes I’ve ever seen - totally unexpected

slow horses is a weird name - but it’s based on slough house. The whole concept is just brilliant

HouseWithASeaView · 01/11/2025 09:31

Writing the OP and the reading the responses will have taken you 15 mins or so. You could have spent that time watching the first few minutes of series 1 and may well have been completely hooked already.
I held out about it for ages, partly because everyone had raved about it so much that I thought that, even if it had been good, it wouldn’t be worth all of this hype and so I would be underwhelmed. I watched the first episode and suddenly transformed from someone who only watches perhaps an hour of TV a week to finding time to watch an episode each day and wish I could watch more. Try it!

SayLessPan · 01/11/2025 09:38

mustytrusty · 31/10/2025 19:54

It’s pretty much the best ensemble programme I’ve ever watched. Every one of them is flawed and human. Gary Oldman is brilliant but so are Saskia Reeves, Jack Lowden, Chris Chung and Kristin Scott Thomas. There’s not a duff bit of casting amongst them. It’s darkly funny and extremely clever and also action packed. If you don’t watch it you’re missing out.

Given that Succession exists in the world, I’m not sure Slow Horses is the best ensemble piece I have ever seen.

But I agree with the rest.

One thing: Mick Herron’s writing of Roddy Ho is pretty objectionable - the TV adaptation smooths over that.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 01/11/2025 09:44

I started when series 3 came out. Loads of people had recommended it and I eventually gave it a go and flipping loved it!

For me, I find it interesting that the agents look like regular people - they aren’t glam or sexy. A bit like a Scandi-noir in some ways. Everyone is flawed and I found he characters to be quite rounded.

There is humour but it’s not laugh a minute and it’s very British humour- cynical and not obvious.

I would definitely give it a go - watch the first few episodes and see what you think.

kshaw · 01/11/2025 10:21

Binged four series in less than 2 weeks and I'm not a massive TV watcher. Me and DP binging 5th season tonight and I can't wait! I've just started the first book
