Regarding the “obvious” clue, you’d have to go and look at the word list to try and count back to figure it out so it’s not like you’d just know what the word was!

On balance, the “obvious” clue may have actually been too cryptic!
I often look back through old target words when I can’t get any hits for a while, as inspiration.

The thing is, even if you’d put me and @IOweMySanityToBasilParsley out of our misery and told us the number it was from, we’d still have had to make the decision to go and look for it!! So even if you’d been obvious we didn’t have to
look
