Were you ever on a site with a strong community feel

Just interested to know what people have to say about this. I was on a questions and answers site, not that I imparted much knowledge, it was mainly the music and chat areas I liked. But there were a lot of friendly regulars who I was friends with over tinternet. Mostly Americans, and I think about them now and then. No particular single other user but I miss the community, the atmosphere, if that's the word. I suppose my kids were no longer needing me and it filled a bit of space in my head, my life. Killed odd bits of time and was nice seeing a side of other users lives.

Plenty to be dealing with now and even if it came back I've moved on from that kind of site, I think.

Can other people relate to this ?

The xkcd forum in ~2010. Super lovely.

Babyworld antenatal forum.

strawgoh · 15/10/2025 22:42

Yes, I'm still on a hobby one connected to long since grown-up dc's extra-curricular. A few of us know each other irl.

menopausalfart · 15/10/2025 22:43

Babywearing Facebook groups. It was, in the most part, a very supportive community.

Octavia64 · 15/10/2025 22:43

Yes, part of usenet n the late 90s.

usenet doesn’t exist anymore.

Sux2buthen · 15/10/2025 22:45

Babybump. It was fantastic and then bizarrely Jessica alba bought a company that was involved in it somehow and closed it down. We were all gutted at the time 😂

Handbag.com

Miss that site!

saraclara · 15/10/2025 22:52

Yep. Many of us became real life friends, and one of them is my best friend.

We're nearly all still online but the forum is now closed to new members, and I believe largely invisible. Many of our members have been in the group for more then two decades.

IHaveRunOutOfIdeas · 15/10/2025 22:54

Bad mother’s club. Loved it, joined the Facebook group once the website closed. No longer on Facebook though and do wonder how everyone is doing.

Oh my goodness yes!!!! I used to post on this ALL the time. That was 2005 for me.

louderthan · 15/10/2025 22:54

Band forums in the early/mid 2000s. So much camaraderie, meet ups before gigs, ticket swaps, lift shares, there would always be be a floor to sleep on if the gig was in Sheffield and you lived in Milton Keynes…

elliejjtiny · 15/10/2025 22:56

Ivillage. I found the ttc board back in 2004, then moved to a mums due board.

BloodandGlitter · 15/10/2025 22:58

Neopets a specific forum of - about 10 years ago now. A friend of mine met her now husband on there and eventually moved to America to live with him. Now that will be outing if any of the others from the group are on here Grin

Mumsnet in the 00’s.

I was going to say exactly this. We used to have meet ups

Hoolihan · 15/10/2025 23:03

Yes - big wedding website with a busy off topic forum, which then spawned a separate spin-off forum. I was on there for a good few years, it was a hoot. Lots of big characters/dramas/gossip and lots of funny and supportive people too.

Yes, small mumsnet. I remember the time a poster gave an open invitation for people to come and camp in her field for a mumsnet weekend. Anyone could turn up. There were also regular meet ups in London and around the country.

I came on to say BMC! Now I’m curious about who you are 🤣

I can’t remember if I’m still in the FB group or not but def not active!

Bladderpool · 15/10/2025 23:09

Homeground, a Kate Bush fan site. It was great until the 2014 shows when a load of new people started posting. We were used to having meandering chats about cats and holidays, they were all very boring and serious. I left in a huff 🥴

ThatsNotMyNameAlan · 15/10/2025 23:10

Bad Mothers Club. Loved it.

BBC Archers messageboards aka Mustardland.

Latenightreader · 15/10/2025 23:14

uk.media.radio.archers was my first forum c1998 and I loved it. I'm still in touch with some people although I haven't been on there since the mid2000s. I do have both a mug and a t-shirt, plus very happy memories of meet ups.

I also enjoyed theladiesloos on livejournal.

DoodleLug · 15/10/2025 23:15

The early forums around 2000 were great, I was on a pet one, a finance one and a ttc one and there were never so many posters you couldn't follow them, we'd post nearly our full addresses and arrange meet ups.

Recently I've been in some but they're a side of a paid service so a less transient group and people keen to engage to get their moneys worth.

Oddly I was in a crypto one and split off with a number of complete strangers I clicked with to help each other out. Lent each other thousands of pounds of crypto without ever knowing identities, and no one ever took the piss. Was probably very lucky!

I’m still friends with my Ivillage mums due group from over 20 years ago. One flew over recently from Ireland for my 50th.

Gigwise... early00's
Still going I think k?
Nationwide gig guide/reviews etc.
The chat forum was heavily populated with loads of people actually from/in our city. Was ace for networking/promoting/meets at gigs etc.- taking the piss out of friends on a national platform was also a lot of fun... tool a while for some posters to figure out we all pretty much knew each other off the boards 😅
