What do you have with toad in the hole?

Aside from gravy by the jugful and peas?

Does it need anything else with it in your household?
We have cauliflower cheese (made extra yesterday) or mashed potatoes today.
Some days it's just as is.

Mash, peas and gravy 🤤 or roast potatoes and onion gravy 🤤 and savoy cabbage 🥬

Eyesopenwideawake · 15/10/2025 21:39

He has baked beans, which I hate, plus gravy.

I have slightly mushy brussels, which he hates, plus gravy.

Thankfully neither of us are prone to farting!! 😂

Schoolrefusa · 15/10/2025 21:42

We had ours with baked beans and broccoli this week but I am jealous of how many of you manage to make gravy or onion gravy. Does anyone have any tips on this or is it just a case of buying gravy granules? My mum always makes gravy from meat juices etc and I never make any as less confident cooking

FurForksSake · 15/10/2025 21:47

I make proper gravy on a Sunday when I have a joint. Otherwise it’s bistro or onion gravy granules. For onion gravy I’ll slow cook a sliced onion and then when it’s really well cooked just in a stock pot and boiling water. Thicken it with slaked cornflour. Add some thyme for flavour.

Very well timed thread for me… planning on making my first toad in the hole this weekend (gluten free DP is away so making the most of it 🙃).

My Yorkies are usually ok (famous last words) - so planning on hot oil, not opening the door etc, but any other pro tips very gratefully received!

planning on mash, peas and gravy for the sides as the answer to the actual thread question! X

DilkushaKitchen · 15/10/2025 21:57

I would always do three veg with a meal like that - a brassica (cabbage/broccoli/caulifower), peas or green beans, carrots. Plus mash and gravy, obviously.

Hereforthecommentz · 15/10/2025 21:59

Roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots and sometimes farrows peas.

Blarn · 15/10/2025 22:01

Carrots and broccoli. I think the sweetness of the carrots work as done the bitter green of the broccoli.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 15/10/2025 22:03

Green veg - ideally frozen peas, and gravy - ideally onion.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 15/10/2025 22:07

Mashed potato, peas and lovely thick gravy. Writing that has made me hungry.

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 15/10/2025 22:07

Gently fried, caramelly onions and baked beans.

YourLoftyCyanZebra · 15/10/2025 22:08

Mash with milk and butter, mid range coleslaw, piccalilli

DangoDays · 15/10/2025 22:13

My mum used to serve it with tinned tomatoes and mushy peas. I accept this is odd but I liked it. It was never enough though. I’d always serve it with mash.

DiscoBob · 15/10/2025 22:22

Peas and carrots and onion gravy. And mash.

Apparently it’s weird to have baked beans and peas, dh moans but I think it’s fine. Also sweetcorn and baked beans. Peas or sweetcorn and tinned spaghetti…

It is weird. I don't like any of thise (weird) combinations, even though I live the all separately.

@ChippySauce Mines a veggie sausage in the hole please...and if you're asking... I'll have mash & onion gravy with mushy pease 😋

MoonWoman69 · 15/10/2025 22:52

Spring cabbage and creamy, buttery mash with thick gravy!

caringcarer · 15/10/2025 23:43

We don't have peas we have baked beans with it.

Ijwwm · 16/10/2025 01:52

Peas and/or sprouts. Roast potatoes. A vat of thick gravy. Autumnal dinner perfection.

LivingTheDreamish · 16/10/2025 05:52

Stir fried cabbage (but like the sound of cauliflower cheese).

PastaAllaNorma · 16/10/2025 06:01

No mash because the Yorkshire pudding is the carb. Onion gravy and two veg.

@Schoolrefusa not gravy granules, they aren't nice. Cook onions down in butter, make a roux, add stock. Onion gravy.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 16/10/2025 06:29

tenderstem brócoli, gravy

TubeScreamer · 16/10/2025 06:31

Broccoli, gravy

no potatoes

Lulu1919 · 16/10/2025 06:31

Mash

APurpleSquirrel · 16/10/2025 12:05

We treat it like a roast - so roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, sometimes cauliflower & Brussels; gravy. We tend to do it deconstructed now - so sausages & separate Yorkshire puddings as the kids order it that way.

Ketryne · 16/10/2025 13:06

Baked beans have no place with a toad in the hole, and putting them on the same plate as gravy should be a criminal offence.

My toad in the hole is always enormous so I don’t think it needs mash, but I make some for the kids as they have less veg. I like buttered cabbage, tenderstem broccoli and carrots (roasted if I can be bothered). Plus lots and lots of gravy of Northern thickness. No weak and weedy southern jus please!
