The best sleeping tablets?

To anyone who uses sleeping tablets, please could you let me know the best OTC ones you’ve found that work but don’t leave you feeling like a zombie the next day?

I get 5mg of Melatonin from Biovea, delivery is normally really quick.

Another vote for Kirkland sleep aid - only half a tablet though.

Yep, half a Kirkland Sleep Aid, or "the blue pill" as DH and I now call it.

Kirkland Sleep Aid is Doxylamine Succinate which is a sedating antihistamine, same family as Promethazine (Night nurse and Sominex) and Diphenydramine (Benylin drowsy).

OK, aside from the nonsense "multivitamin" type replies, 95% are for antihistamines.

The rest are melatonin, which is a) not available in the UK, and b) has questionable results.

do u include magnesium as nonsense - there is an evidence base to suggest efficacy
melatonin - as PP have said it can be obtained online in UK
valerian root - has some evidence - and is endorsed in some countries like Germany - I find it sedating !!

I am unable to take anti histamines due to Afib. That's why I made up my own "nonsense" cocktail that works for me. That's the thing, it's only nonsense if it doesn't work for anyone. The key ingredients are magnesium and paracetemol (small dose). Both are well down for aiding sleep, the magnesium has relaxing qualities, and the paracetemol aids sleep both for those in pain and without - if you are in bed of course! It won't knock you out if you are up and about.

Melatonin is good, I don't take it though now as I used to be able to get it on eBay and can't any longer. I take high strength magnesium along with ashwaganda now which seems to work too, I have also used valerian root in the past too which was good but I don't think valerian should be taken long term, but I'm not sure so please check.

Oh yeah the Sleep Aid tablets are good too.

Not a sleeping tablet, but l-theanine is incredibly relaxing. Good for anxiety and sleep!

3mg of melatonin gives me 8 hours sleep. It absolutely transformed my life. Insomnia was my only symptom of menopause and it was awful.

I get it on prescription from my GP (not in the uk)

If you only take half a tablet occasionally one bottle lasts ages.

Boots Sleepeeze 50mg from the pharmacy take 2, no side effects the next day.

I take half of one “ two a night sleep aid” (Nytol) but shops own brand much cheaper with same ingredients… never fails to get me off to sleep, sometimes wake up at 3/4 but take other half if I really can’t go back to sleep but this is rare… tiny dose, mo grogginess next day.

A tiny nibble of mirtazapine. Stopped taking them due to weight gain but missed the deep sleep effects.

I agree with this. It never fails, ever. I’m always asleep within 20 mins.

10mg melatonin, which usually lasts until around 4am. My friend however is hungover the next day on 2mg!
