The best sleeping tablets?

To anyone who uses sleeping tablets, please could you let me know the best OTC ones you’ve found that work but don’t leave you feeling like a zombie the next day?

The thing about magnesium is that there are different formulations with different effects depending on what you need, so I wouldn't discount it. Mg glycinate (Mg bound to glycine) is best for relaxation, sleep, anxiety reduction etc. Other formulations are better for promoting energy, or as laxatives. I wouldn't just go out and buy any old Mg off the shelf. I personally find it works quite well.

Absolutely. The cheaper versions are usually Oxide which is an osmotic laxative and poorly absorbed by the body.

I take Glycinate too and it helps my quality of sleep in general but for stress, a build up of lack of sleep, or being in a hotel, the blue pill wins.

Rest is the entire issue, even if I took the day off I can’t sleep Sad
spoke to my manager but someone is off unwell so they can’t do anything for me today
I find people are very much “I’ve got kids and I’m always tired so just get on with it”

If your manager is letting you work on 5 days of little to no sleep they're exceptionally greedy. If you rang in sick they'd have to sort it out. Their lack of planning isn't your problem.

Your boss is basically saying fuck you, fuck everyone on the road, I don't care if you swerve into traffic or pedestrians because you're nodding off at the wheel and your cognitive function is impaired as long as what little cognitive function you've got left you give to us to make us money.

I've got a child, he doesn't sleep very well (well he does better now he's on melatonin but not perfect) and I've got insomnia, I've had it on and off all my life. Let me tell you that I'd rather have the sort of sleep cycle where I can go back to sleep if my kid wakes up and goes back to sleep than psychosis inducing insomnia because that's what happens.

Fuck people who say well I've got kids and I get on with it. Don't hold yourself to their standards. It's not a race to the bottom, you're allowed to be absolutely on your knees gasping for sleep without other people coming and telling you you're fine they've got it worse when they probably don't.

Yes agree on the Magnesium Glycinate. I can't find a soluble version, so for my cocktail I open a capsule (I have swallowing issues due to other stuff), and use the powder from them. As I have Afib I also take Magnesium Taurate if I get a run of arrythmia and it's brilliant also. Obviously if the irregular heartbeat lasts I go to A+E if necessary, I'm not stooooopid 😊

It's not available over the counter in the UK, it must be prescribed.

I buy it online without prescription - when my daughter had it it was prescribed by her consultant but she was a child - as an adult I’ve never had an issue

Sarahpainting · 15/10/2025 10:40

I second Bach’s rescue gummies I only use half and I’m off for the night. Be careful with Kalms they made my dizzy after a while, it does say on the leaflet but I’d not seen it.

Lizbeth59 · 15/10/2025 10:41

Ive just called docs this morning asking if I can be prescribed some melatonin she was a junior doctor and not sure if they were able to prescribe it. She started telling me I could get it in Holland and Barrett you cant. She is going to ask one of the senior doctors and get back to me. If they say no then I will order online from the states. My trouble is I fall asleep but wake up around 3-4 am and cant get back its chronic now and really struggle with the lack of sleep and trying to get through work etc.

hideawayforever · 15/10/2025 10:45

I use sleep aid, find it really good

popcornandpotatoes · 15/10/2025 10:47

All the own brand versions of nytol I have tried have worked well. You can get some in boots, Tesco, Morrisons.

TheFoodLife · 15/10/2025 11:54

NautilusLionfish · 14/10/2025 23:28

Piriton, Nytol, Benadryl etc are Anticholinergics and might be linked to dementia and Alzheimers. Several studies show a link but they are not definitively sure if it's the meds or the insomnia. Piriton and Nytol work wonders for me but that research scares me given its not one study. So am trying to depend more on melatonin. Plus I think the former tend to leave me groggy. Might try Phernegan or Mirtazapine next . Where can I get these @Busybeemumm

Phenergan is also a type1 anti histamine, same as Benadryl. It’s promethazine.

Take as low a dose as you can, as infrequently as you can, apparently. Though I have heard the link to alz.is debateable.

Yes it is debatable. Some think the link is more that people who took sleeping tablets that long (3 years consistently) did so because they had spent years before with insomnia. So they think its the insomnia rather than the sleeping tablets that is the link to Dementia and/or Alzheimer's. Who knows. I dont want to scare anyone so that is why I said in that post its not definitive and is it the insomnia or the tablets. It just gives me pause sometimes. But I still take when I need to

I hope melatonin works for you, if not.. I found montmorency cherry helped me stay asleep better.

Im considering joining one of those online clinics that prescribe mj medicinally, to see if I can get the kind of sleep gummies that have thc in them, a friend in America gave me some and they were truly liberating. Fantastic sleep, no grogginess, and after a week on them, I felt so light and refreshed. Tiny amount of thc in them, paired with cbd and melatonin.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 15/10/2025 12:03

Phenergan

Yeah my manager said “I haven’t had a full nights sleep in years with the kids, you just have to cope don’t you”
if I go to bed when I get home I’ll manage a few hours but then awake all night, or I can stay up and likely sleep 3am -6am. Shit either way

I’ve found some Kirkland sleep aid but it’s out of date… guessing it’ll be fine to take

Then you are either buying it illegally, buying it from abroad, or it isn't melatonin.

Not zopiclone that’s for sure. I’m going through a terrible period of insomnia at the moment, GP prescribed these and they have made zero difference at all. So I’m therefore watching with interest.

They work brilliantly for me but are so addictive.

Your manager is an arse. I very much doubt they'll have your back in the event of a bad road accident.

Yes, you get it sent over from the US. It’s the real deal. I use Piping Rock.

Cotswoldmama · 15/10/2025 16:30

I use melatonin from piping rock too. I have found I only need 1-2 mg

I’m going to take the Kirkland sleep aid tonight and see if it helps
and no, probably not

LooseCanyon · 15/10/2025 16:37

I don't know if this is worth mentioning, but - if any of you drink alcohol in the evening, then waking at about 3am is the alcohol wearing off.

Alcohol can get you to sleep, but (the lack of it) will also wake you up.

Giddykiddy · 15/10/2025 17:13

Another vote for phenergen- on prescription. Makes me a bit woozy next day tho

ConnieHeart · 15/10/2025 17:26

I was absolutely exhausted but still waking in the middle of the night & lying awake for hours. The only thing that's helped night time waking is mirtazapine. It's been a life saver

Wonderknicks · 15/10/2025 17:36

I occasionally use amitriptyline 10mg (on prescription ) if I've had a run of bad sleep. I have to take it at 6 or 7 in the evening as it makes me groggy the next day, but it gives me a brilliant night's sleep.
A friend takes it every day & doesn't get the grogginess unless she goes up to 20mg.

Low doses of mirtazipine. It’s not prescribed for insomnia but is bloody useful!
