DS15 Used a Green Apple to Roll His Foot After Hike – Am I Overreacting?

So, we just got back from a weekend in the Lake District with our two lads (15 and 11) and another family. We all did Scafell Pike together, and it was brilliant... but when we got back to the hotel, my DS15 said his feet were aching after the hike. To try and ease the pain, he decided to put a green apple on the floor and roll his bare foot back and forth over it. It’s something he does at home with a tennis ball after football training, and it really helps with muscle soreness.

Now, here’s the thing: we didn’t have a tennis ball, so he used an apple instead. I get that he was trying to relieve the pain, but when I saw him doing it, I was a bit miffed. The apple obviously had to go straight in the bin after – it ended up all soft and stinky! I just feel like if he thought he was going to need something like that, he should’ve remembered to bring a tennis ball.

Am I being unreasonable to be a bit frustrated about it, or am I overreacting? I know he was trying to help himself, but I just can’t help thinking it was a bit... well, a waste to use an apple!

There are15 year olds out there doing drugs, getting pregnant and being involved in knife crime, you should count your lucky stars if this is all your 15 year old has done wrong!!! 🙄

@alwaystired I agree completely except for the little bit where you said "if this is all your 15 year old has done wrong!!!" as I don't believe he did any wrong at all.

Alwaysalert · 15/10/2025 17:23

And I repeat, you had already been on the hike, and it was only an apple - not the only apple left in the world. Your excuses are farcical. Does he know that he is now the subject of an internet debate about his "sin". It wasn't the apple in the Garden of Eden so get over it. I feel so sorry for your son.

Alwaysalert · 15/10/2025 17:34

"Brilliant!, you did make me laugh out loudly, very loudly, which made up for the tears I almost shed for her son after reading her post".

Alwaysalert · 15/10/2025 17:49

The most annoying question I have ever seen on here. Maybe a troll trying to get a reaction as nobody surely could be that tight and uncaring. They had been on the hike - so no-one going to faint of hunger on the said hike, they were staying in a hotel - so not short of money and the price of an apple against her son's pain. Did you have a rant at him and spoil his weekend? I do not like food waste especially when I have visited carveries and people pile their food instead of eating a normal plate size and then going back up if they are still hungry, but they cost about £12-£15 per serving and about a third to a half will be left on the plate - not the price of one apple that he was trying to relieve pain with. You are on the right track to lose your son once he is of age to leave home.

well yes. It was clearly written by AI.

3luckystars · 15/10/2025 18:07

Well even more shocking is the poster ‘crushing up eggshells and putting them into smoothies’ what would possess a person to do something so sick.

Alwaysalert · 15/10/2025 18:19

@3luckystars I crush egg shells and put them on my flowerbeds as someone said it deterred snails/slugs - but to put them in a "Smoothie" well it wouldn't taste very smooth, would it?

😆
Thats me!
Yes it is smooth because they are ground finer than the pips in berries and are tasteless! It was a MIL that got me doing it years go. I use my Ninja blender but she used a pestle and mortar
It was to do with calcium after I had my first baby. Maybe its an old wives thing but its habit now!

@OneShyCritic

I hope you have dropped the subject with your son after apologising for making him the subject of a moral debate on Social Media, as well as for berating him for using his initiative. The reactions on here may not be what you wanted or expected, but they have sure made me laugh. People are so inventive and comedic with their responses, some should go on an open mic night. OP in all seriousness, you need to be thankful that you have a family and the money to go on trips that your sons appear to enjoy. A lot of teenage boys would have acted surly all day as they would not have wanted to be there with their parents, and would have made sure you got the message. Hold them close and be grateful you are not dealing with some of the awful, awful tragic events that could and do often take place, to ordinary people like you and your family, and all the other posters on here. Take care.

If you lose it over this I dread to think what else you lose it over - those poor kids. You've lost the plot.

No, not the plot. She has lost a green apple.

No5ChalksRoad · 16/10/2025 01:06

I think it was resourceful of him.

The apple wasn’t wasted, it was just used for a different purpose than ingesting calories.

It seems like you are seeking a reason to find fault.

No5ChalksRoad · 16/10/2025 02:18

Look at it this way:

some make a sort of craft dough or clay out of flour and salt

some make a hot pack out of rice placed in a pillow case & microwaved

white vinegar is often used for cleaning

coconut oil can be body lotion, makeup remover or used to grease a squeaky hinge

etc etc etc

Just because something IS edible doesn’t mean it’s wasted if used otherwise.

CommonAsMucklowe · 16/10/2025 06:59

I think you might be a bit odd.

I think you might be a bit odd.

Just a tad…

HoppingPavlova · 16/10/2025 09:40

it’s that the apple got squashed and wasted. It was perfectly good fruit that could’ve been eaten later, and now it’s just gone. I know he was trying to help himself, but it just feels wasteful, especially when we could’ve used it for a snack on the hike

It’s. One. Apple. Seriously, if one apple could make or break your trip then that was very poor planning with food and that’s on you.

SusiQ18472638 · 16/10/2025 09:55

I can’t decide if you are being serious or a wind up, it’s just an apple!

RampantIvy · 16/10/2025 12:45

I'm strugglign to believe that there weren't lots of apples lying around where the OP was. There are loads of apple trees near roads where I am and the pavements are littered with them.

Mumtryingtolivethedream · 16/10/2025 19:59

Unless youre in the middle of a war or in an apocalypse and food is scarce I think the loss of 1 apple is nothing to worry about.

Alwaysalert · 16/10/2025 20:31

DingDongJingle · 13/10/2025 18:14

My garden is absolutely full of rotten apples that have fallen off our tree.

🙄@DingDongJingle

Please send OP one and I will pay the postage. Pleeeeeese.🙏

Alwaysalert · 16/10/2025 20:39

OP has had the hike so apple not needed for it. Ce la vie OP.

mathanxiety · 16/10/2025 23:45

Was it the only food you all had to eat that evening?

JoB1kenobi · 18/10/2025 20:28

I can’t believe you hadn’t got over this and felt like writing a post. What a waste of time and energy. Great idea I say. Plus why bin it? The skin is washable. You realise the apples are grown outside and flies and other insects sh*t over them?

mumbun12345 · 19/10/2025 10:12

This post must be a joke, right?

Surely no one would actually post about this / be annoyed be it… 😂

Gossipisgood · 04/11/2025 14:55

Totally over thinking it! Unless you were all starving & that apple was the only thing available for you to eat. It's 1 apple that helped your Son relieve pain. I think he did well solving the problem of not having a ball. Get over it please
