DS15 Used a Green Apple to Roll His Foot After Hike – Am I Overreacting?

So, we just got back from a weekend in the Lake District with our two lads (15 and 11) and another family. We all did Scafell Pike together, and it was brilliant... but when we got back to the hotel, my DS15 said his feet were aching after the hike. To try and ease the pain, he decided to put a green apple on the floor and roll his bare foot back and forth over it. It’s something he does at home with a tennis ball after football training, and it really helps with muscle soreness.

Now, here’s the thing: we didn’t have a tennis ball, so he used an apple instead. I get that he was trying to relieve the pain, but when I saw him doing it, I was a bit miffed. The apple obviously had to go straight in the bin after – it ended up all soft and stinky! I just feel like if he thought he was going to need something like that, he should’ve remembered to bring a tennis ball.

Am I being unreasonable to be a bit frustrated about it, or am I overreacting? I know he was trying to help himself, but I just can’t help thinking it was a bit... well, a waste to use an apple!

You're being absolutely ridiculous tbh.

AdoraBell · 14/10/2025 20:53

Only reasonable if the apple was only thing for meal.

You could get a spikey ball for Pilates. It sounds odd but really good.

N27 · 14/10/2025 20:54

But was it a waste?

Granted, the (green) apple wasn’t used for its intended purpose, however it was used to satisfy a need and to provide a solution to a human problem.

Arguably, the pain relief the (green) apple provided as a massage aid would have lasted far longer than the hunger relief obtained through its consumption, therefore maybe he actually found a less wasteful use for it.

Piknik · 14/10/2025 20:56

Oh ok phew. I thought you were going to say that he used a green apple to roll his foot after a hike, then stripped naked, put a rock of crack into a pipe and pissed all over the hotel room whilst chanting satanic verse.

So I think you can stand down.

Although I would add that if you are usually this controlling, unhinged and up tight, a wasted apple may be the least of your future worries.

You know in 3 short years he has a choice of whether to see you ever again or not? Maybe you might want to think about relaxing the reins a bit. It can't be nice to have every tiny action judged.

There are kids of that age getting pregnant, taking drugs, bullying others, being a menace to society, swearing at the parents. He sounds very nice for 15. He spent a perfectly nice weekend with you and his brother in the countryside doing healthy stuff, and then he wasted an apple. Hey no one's perfect!

This - will bells on. I think a lot worse of people who buy takeaway coffee and don’t use reusable cups. An apple that will decompose and not end up in landfill? Nah.

I mean it’s food waste. Couldve looked for something else. If there wasnt - ask his mum if she minds him using the apple. Yeah it would annoy me a bit but probably not enough to create a thread.

Maybe there are other things op does he tend to do things without asking or make assumptions and that’s what this is triggering?

PrincessFairyWren · 14/10/2025 20:59

I am surprised by the reactions on here. I think that it is wasting food and pretty gross. I'd be annoyed too.

I get planter fasciitis so I know foot pain. In the absence of a ball he could have used his hands to massage his foot.

Thisisbetweenyoumeandtheinternet · 14/10/2025 21:00

Wow just wow. You are so strange to see this as an issue! It’s bloody apple…

I also dont get why the op is having a hard time. In real life Im pretty sure most posters would act differently.

Okiedokie123 · 14/10/2025 21:09

I think in years to come your kids will say “Remember that awesome day we walked for miles, your foot hurt so you used an apple to try and ease the pain and mum made a huge fuss!”

ThatBlackCat · 14/10/2025 21:10

Would it have mattered less if it were a red apple instead of a green apple? Just wondering because you mentioned the colour of the apple twice.

I think he sounds smart and innovative. Needs must, and all that. I don't see what your problem is. Are you truly saying you couldn't spare one (green) apple, for goodness sake?

😂😂😂😂 I have never read such a ridiculous post on Mumsnet…ever 🤦🏼‍♀️

With what is going on in the world, the least of your worries should be an apple.

Misty333 · 14/10/2025 21:12

🙄 OMG really. Good on your son for his reasoning and he is a great example to his brother, problem solving.

Thesummer · 14/10/2025 21:13

I'm fuming on your behalf OP, the audacity of him! He should have used the red apple! Everyone knows not to use green apples for such a purpose! Teens these days. I blame screen time.

Sausageplait · 14/10/2025 21:17

People have apples in baskets outside their gates for free at this time of year. Go and hunt for one of them to replace it.

Thanks for the replies! Just to clarify, my frustration isn’t about my son trying to relieve his foot pain – it’s that the apple got squashed and wasted. It was perfectly good fruit that could’ve been eaten later, and now it’s just gone. I know he was trying to help himself, but it just feels wasteful, especially when we could’ve used it for a snack on the hike.

I tore my plantar fascia. One thing that really helped the pain (took 6-8 months before I could do it though) was a short piece of pipe kept in the fridge. Same as the tennis ball, you roll the foot on it, but the coolness from the fridge and firmness of the pipe were really good at easing the pain.

Not just an apple, a green apple! For some reason, that seems to have made a difference. Lol!

sweetpickle2 · 13/10/2025 14:13

Would you rather he was in pain? Strange reaction. It's an apple, not a Fabergé egg.

I salute you, Ma'am.

Notmyreality · 14/10/2025 21:32

Jfc

MargolyesofBeelzebub · 14/10/2025 21:33

If you feel that way about an apple, OP, wait till I tell you the story of what my ex did with a large and perfectly good carrot whilst I was away for the weekend...!

GentleJadeOP · 14/10/2025 21:34

OneShyCritic · 13/10/2025 14:25

I also worry it’s not a great example for my younger son (11) to see him just waste food like that.

Perhaps you should have eaten it, just to prove a point! Ridiculous
