DS15 Used a Green Apple to Roll His Foot After Hike – Am I Overreacting?

So, we just got back from a weekend in the Lake District with our two lads (15 and 11) and another family. We all did Scafell Pike together, and it was brilliant... but when we got back to the hotel, my DS15 said his feet were aching after the hike. To try and ease the pain, he decided to put a green apple on the floor and roll his bare foot back and forth over it. It’s something he does at home with a tennis ball after football training, and it really helps with muscle soreness.

Now, here’s the thing: we didn’t have a tennis ball, so he used an apple instead. I get that he was trying to relieve the pain, but when I saw him doing it, I was a bit miffed. The apple obviously had to go straight in the bin after – it ended up all soft and stinky! I just feel like if he thought he was going to need something like that, he should’ve remembered to bring a tennis ball.

Am I being unreasonable to be a bit frustrated about it, or am I overreacting? I know he was trying to help himself, but I just can’t help thinking it was a bit... well, a waste to use an apple!

@Grammarnut I think my sarcasm went over your head. It’s not MY ecological whatnot. I’m mocking the absurdity of things MNetters clutch their pearls about. I couldn’t care less about wasted apples, or oranges for Christingles. At least at my Christingle service, the vicar points out the buckets of water when the candles are lit, and warns people to tie hair back, cos health and safety, innit.

QueenClinomania · 13/10/2025 17:54

Its just one apple and he used it in a way that helped him. It's not, imo, a big deal.

OneShyCritic · 13/10/2025 14:25

Thanks for the replies! Just to clarify, my frustration isn’t about my son trying to relieve his foot pain – it’s that the apple got squashed and wasted. It was perfectly good fruit that could’ve been eaten later, and now it’s just gone. I know he was trying to help himself, but it just feels wasteful, especially when we could’ve used it for a snack on the hike.

Wow! What a massive over reaction. Have you really got nothing more to worry about? The weather this year has meant that there is a surplus of apples. People cam't even give them away where we live.

Of course YABVVVU.

Harleyband · 13/10/2025 17:57

Surely this can't be real. A 15 yo DS goes on a family hike, willingly, and all DM can say is that he's a bad example to his 11 yo brother for using an apple as foot massager? OP count your blessings and back slowly away before you alienate your children forever. Personally, if I were DS I'd be running for the hills if this was real.

Raspberrymoon49 · 13/10/2025 18:09

What is this nonsense?

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 13/10/2025 18:13

I don’t like unnecessary food waste so it would probably annoy me too, but I’d just point it out in a casual way so that they know for next time. I don’t think it’s worth a proper telling off.

DingDongJingle · 13/10/2025 18:14

My garden is absolutely full of rotten apples that have fallen off our tree.

PotolKimchi · 13/10/2025 18:19

@OneShyCritic Assuming that this apple isn’t the difference between starvation and otherwise, and assuming that your DS isn’t a wasteful person, yes you are. And the fact that you are extrapolating about the lesson being set is even more extreme. That you are less worried about his ankle and more worried about the lessons being drawn from an apple suggests an underlying issue.

Which suggests that there is something else going on and the apple has brought this issue to the fore. Now we can’t guess what that issue is: did you grow up in poverty? Did you grow up in a household where a ‘mistake’ like this would have resulted in punishment? Are you worried about something else to do with your DS?

101Alsatians · 13/10/2025 18:25

Reminds me of the time my kids were home for a staff training day, told them not to disturb me for 30 mins while I had a Teams call unless someone was suddenly ill, bleeding, danger etc. (they were both 7+ btw)

In that short window,DS2 managed to get a splinter and I came back into the room to find DS1 attempting to remove said splinter with a pair of chopsticks as the tweezers were in with me in office/bedroom.

I thought that was brilliant 🤣

@AngelinaFibres
I don't blame you. It's a wonder she didn't look for the dislodged chicken and make him eat that again. What a miserable existence. Growing up in poverty in not nice but really let go of those shackles. There is being mindful of waste and of those less fortunate and there is being tight. OP sounds tight. There are no pockets in shrouds.

My SIL grew up in a family where her father was hugely well paid. She has no reason for her ridiculous rules. She is bonkers

viques · 13/10/2025 18:32

At least he did it publicly and didn’t just secretly put the apple back in the bowl .

” Something about this apple is making me crave a bit of good cheese Gwendoline. Have we got any Wensleydale left pet? “

( That is my best Wallace impression, if they hadn’t already found someone to replace Peter Sallis RIP I think I would be in with a shout.)

MoominMai · 13/10/2025 18:34

@OneShyCritic I think you missed a trick there OP. You should have praised your son for his improvisational skills and then used the now slightly squishy apple to show how it still has purpose and shouldn’t be consigned to the bin. You could have cleaned it and mushed it further, stewed with sugar or simply just sliced and ate it in preparation if you were ever stranded on a hike for a period then it’s good practice to eat yucky but perfectly safe foods starting with the humble apple squishy! Basically a little practice lesson in survival!

SavageGarden23 · 13/10/2025 18:36

See if you were a bit more worried about your son's foot health than a bloody apple, you would have offered to massage his feet yourself. Or sort a warm bath.or painkillers.

anyolddinosaur · 13/10/2025 18:59

You can not be serious!

ERthree · 13/10/2025 19:46

Thank goodness there wasn't any M&S Beef wellington available.

😂😂

TheBlueHotel · 13/10/2025 19:48

He didn't waste the apple, he used the apple.

OrangeAxolotyl · 13/10/2025 19:48

Where are you staying? Let me send you a crate of apples.
Plus a tennis ball for the lad's foot.

OrangeAxolotyl · 13/10/2025 19:49

TheBlueHotel · 13/10/2025 19:48

He didn't waste the apple, he used the apple.

But it's fooooood! 😭
What if the OP needed a snack while hiking?!

This is going down in the annals of Mumsnet.

“And all was for an apple,
An apple that he took,
As clerkes finden,
written in their book.”
”Nay, had the apple taken been…”

Edited

In case anyone's wondering, it's the poem "Adam lay ybounden".

Adam lay ybounden,
Bounden in a bond;
Four thousand winter
Thought he not too long.

And all was for an apple,
An apple that he took.
As clerkes finden written
In their book.

Nor had one apple taken been,
The apple taken been,
Then had never Our Lady,
A-been heaven's Queen.

Blessed be the time
That apple taken was!
Therefore we may singen
Deo gratias!

I read the OP and considered pounding my head on the pavement, but the comments made up for it 😁

Alwaysalert · 14/10/2025 04:14

Hike was over, sore and no Tennis so used the apple. Simples. What was/is the problem?

Petitchat · 14/10/2025 04:54

MagicMagpie · 13/10/2025 17:29

I call reverse. You are the apple, aren’t you?

🤣 🤣 🤣

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 14/10/2025 17:59

HappyLittleSunflower · 14/10/2025 18:00

Is this a joke? You can't possibly have taken the time to write a post about an apple???
