Miller and carter when you don't like steak or chicken

elliejjtiny · 08/10/2025 09:39

I'm meant to be going there next week at lunchtime, wouldn't be my choice of restaurant but dh really likes steak and somebody else is paying so i am sucking it up. What should i order? I was thinking of getting a couple of side dishes instead of a main meal but i wasn't sure how many side dishes would be the equivalent of a main meal.

Bit selfish to choose a restaurant you know one person won’t enjoy.
There must be countless other places where he can get a decent steak, with a broader menu.

Chemenger · 08/10/2025 09:46

They do have other options on the menu, there are fish options, burgers and ribs, lamb and vegetarian mains.

BadActingParsley · 08/10/2025 09:46

I'd go for cod or lobster with salad and chips. Or calamari and prawns.

Worldgonecrazy · 08/10/2025 09:48

Having sides is a good idea. Miller & Carter don’t cater well for vegetarians.

Chocosecco · 08/10/2025 09:48

The menu is available online along with calorific information. Just pick something?

givemushypeasachance · 08/10/2025 09:48

Look at the menu online, the starters and the sides, they've all got calorie counts on so you should be able to estimate from that if 2-3 cover it for your appetite and potential sharing with other people?

dementedpixie · 08/10/2025 09:49

I just checked the menu and they do a 3 for £12 menu with vegetarian/vegan options. They also have plant burgers. They have fish options as well as the meat options too

Forgottenmyphone · 08/10/2025 09:49

They do salads which you can customise with various toppings, and I’ve had a good sea bass dish.

Someone else is paying and taking me somewhere where I can't eat the main event....I sure am having the lobster!

pizzaHeart · 08/10/2025 09:53

Are others going to have starters?

you can have a starter as a main with a side dish and it would be enough. Just mention that it’s going to be your main.

Exactly, 30 seconds on google shows the menu has loads of suitable options.

Esssa · 08/10/2025 09:59

I once went to a fish restaurant that my in laws picked. I don't like fish particularly or the smell of it. I managed to find a started and a main that contained zero fish. Couldn't do anything about the smell though. I'm sure they will have something you can eat if I coped in a fish restaurant.

But if OPs Google basic questions instead of asking random people on mumsnet how else would we know they are being taken for lunch at Millet and Carter/ Amazon order not been delivered / is travelling from Paddington to Kings Cross next Tuesday

FcukBreastCancer · 08/10/2025 10:01

I'd suggest you order food.

Really?
Given all the cruelty involved in the treatment of lobsters I could never ever consider ordering lobster.

You seem to be getting some unreasonable responses to a simple query, we ARE IN ‘CHAT’ not AIBU. And, If everyone bothered to actually read the Op’s main query, it was about how many side dishes would be the equivalent of a main meal.
Unfortunately , I’ve not been to one, so I can’t help you with this @elliejjtiny but hopefully there may be someone slightly more informed, and less snipey, along soon regarding your query.

Chewbecca · 08/10/2025 10:21

There's plenty more than steak and chicken.

Main menu includes lamb rump (quite good, with dauphinoise), ribs, cod, sea bass as well as veggie options. Salads with a choice of toppings.

Google the menu of your local branch. There is usually a set lunch menu so you might want/need to stick with that. Still plenty of non steak / chicken options.

elliejjtiny · 08/10/2025 11:04

Thank you. I have already looked at the menu, i was more asking about the portion sizes of the sides or recommendations of things. I also wanted to gage whether it was normal to order a couple of sides or if that would be "not doing it properly". I hadn't thought of working it out by the calories, that's a really good idea. Dh didn't choose the restaurant, the person paying did. They rave about it all the time and are shocked that we haven't been so they said they would come with us and pay. Dh and i rarely go out for a meal without dc and it's not somewhere where we could take them with us. Also i didn't want to deprive dh of a free steak. I did politely suggest we go somewhere else that does steak but was told " but we want to take you to miller and carter".

It was a joke, referring to what that poster suggested. Nobody is forcing you to eat lobster.

Though arguably killing any animal for human consumption is cruel. I wouldn't think most animal welfare activists would eat at Miller & Carter in any case.

MellowPinkDeer · 08/10/2025 11:15

Have you ever been to a restaurant before @elliejjtiny?!

Well I'm glad it was a joke. The thought of lobsters been boiled alive for people to eat makes me so angry.

And you are right : I wouldn't be able to eat in a restaurant where the majority of people were tucking into steaks and chicken.I can't even walk down the meat aisle in the supermarket without feeling ill.

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/10/2025 11:56

The onion bread is absolutely gorgeous. I wasn't all that impressed with the steaks though.

BCSurvivor · 08/10/2025 12:00

@elliejjtiny not specific to Miller and Carter but I often order sides instead of a main in restaurants, as I generallly find the starters far more interesting than mains.
I would pick two starters and a side of chips/olive bread/onion bread.
