Miller and carter when you don't like steak or chicken

I'm meant to be going there next week at lunchtime, wouldn't be my choice of restaurant but dh really likes steak and somebody else is paying so i am sucking it up. What should i order? I was thinking of getting a couple of side dishes instead of a main meal but i wasn't sure how many side dishes would be the equivalent of a main meal.

Miller and Carter is one of the best steak places for those who want to eat other things - loads of options.
just order what you fancy, it’s your lunch. How can you not do lunch properly?

Well I'm glad it was a joke. The thought of lobsters been boiled alive for people to eat makes me so angry.

And you are right : I wouldn't be able to eat in a restaurant where the majority of people were tucking into steaks and chicken.I can't even walk down the meat aisle in the supermarket without feeling ill.

Fair enough. I heard they stun the lobster or make it go to sleep so it's less cruel? It is still pretty grim though. I actually do love lobster but I can appreciate your concerns.

3rded, the onion loaf is delicious

Just order what you like from their quite extensive menu; be it starters, sides or a main. I went for lunch with a friend last week to a local Italian. He had a starter and a main. I had a starter, served with his; then a further two starters which I asked to be served at the same time as his main. We shared a salad, also served as we ate our ‘main’. No problem.
What’s the issue?

Also @elliejjtinyMiller and Carter is definitely family friendly so you could take your kids there. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t. I think they have a children’s menu. My ex (I moved away) local one opened in 2008 and I took my two there often as children. They both love steak (I don’t anymore) and were eating at Goucho by teens. My exH took our son out for a Tomahawk steak on his 16th.

I read this as “hey guys, going to this place, which is known for blah. I don’t want that so HMU with your knowledge/recommendations as I have never been.”

Friendly chit-chat. Social media at its most friendly. What the cattiness

(I have never been, but I often treat and restaurant like a tapas place, given the chance)

Why would you not just order one of the many mains on the menu that aren't steak or chicken? I think faffing around with two or three starters instead just seems like you're being dramatic and making some kind of a point (even if that's not your intention). It's a meal you're not paying for. As long as there's something on the menu that you can eat, even if its not your favourite, you just politely order a main without making any fuss, surely?

The people taking us are very enthusiastic about the place. My 14 year old isn't really keen on chinese food but will happily go to our local chinese buffet restaurant and have chips, pizza and prawn crackers, fine by me. This person waves various food items at him, tries to put stuff on his plate and tells him he ought to try things. We went with them to kfc and i just had chips and beans without complaining and i kept being told that i should have a chicken burger because it hasn't got much chicken in it. So i thought if i have the fish and chips or something i would get sighed at and told i should be eating steak in a steak restaurant and that i always have fish and chips. I don't always, and we only go out with them once a year or so anyway so it's not like i eat fish and chips for every meal.

I'm not really sure how having a couple or starters/side dishes will help with that? It's more likely to attract comment than just ordering a non chicken/non steak meal, surely?

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 08/10/2025 14:15

Do you have to go? Send DH on his own to enjoy his steak and avoid the annoying people trying to make you eat food you don’t like.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 08/10/2025 14:17

Bloody hell, talk about overthinking it. Who the hell cares if you get "sighed at" for ordering what you want? Pick something you'd like, politely ignore any digs about not ordering steak or whatever, and thank them for the freebie. It really needn't be as difficult as you're making it out to be.

dontmalbeconme · 08/10/2025 15:20

Just having side dishes rather than one of the many non steak/non chicken options comes across as a bit passive aggressive making a point that it's not your choice of restaurant and you want everyone to know it, as does having just chips and beans in KFC.

Honestly, just don't take them up on their generous offer of a free meal if you don't want to go. Your DH can manage to go and eat steak without you, I'm sure.

I think I had a vegan rainbow lasagne when I went. It was good.

Instinct1 · 08/10/2025 16:00

We go sometimes as my Husband likes a steak, so for a Birthday or something. Their fish and chips is lovely, and their veggie option, sometimes something like roast butternut squash etc, also really good.
