Was paracetamol always ok in pregnancy?

I don’t want to comment on the nonsense in the news at the moment, but it has got me thinking. I don’t remember being able to take paracetamol while pregnant. I definitely don’t remember being able to take anything for a cold. Am I misremembering? I was pregnant in 2008 and in Ireland. Anyone remember what the advice was back then?

It was ok in 2010!

GoodVibesOnly21 · 23/09/2025 17:55

I was pregnant in 2004 and was definitely allowed to take paracetamol.

splothersdog · 23/09/2025 17:55

I had my first child in 2001 and it was the only recommended painkiller

I had seriously bad SPD when I was pregnant in 2018 and I was told I could take it. I did, daughter had no ill effects.

childofthe607080s · 23/09/2025 17:56

Ok the the 1990s too

Saucery · 23/09/2025 17:56

Pregnant in 2002, absolutely fine to take it.

tinaabbot · 23/09/2025 17:58

Thanks everyone, I was obviously misremembering, or maybe just mixing it up with cold medicine or something else. It’s not something I have thought about in years

Waiting for the law suit!

Minnie798 · 23/09/2025 17:59

It was known to be safe for use in pregnancy back in the 90's.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 23/09/2025 18:00

I was also pregnant in 2008 and it definitely was ok to take paracetamol.

KnitKnitKnitting · 23/09/2025 18:00

I suspect you’re mixing it up with cold medicine - decongestants are advised against.

ChimneyPot · 23/09/2025 18:01

I had my eldest in Ireland in 2002 and paracetamol was definitely ok if needed.
But for a cold I was encouraged to just take hot drinks and to only take paracetamol if I had a raised temperature.
I remember being encouraged to rub balm on my temples for a headache.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/09/2025 18:01

It’s fine. He’s a twat. I got given paracetamol when I couldn’t walk, I was literally crying for something more.

fancy injecting bleach?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/09/2025 18:01

I was pregnant with my first in 1989 and my SIL who was a midwife, told me to take paracetamol when I was prostrated with a headache whilst staying with her. So I reckon it was ok even back then.

ghostyslovesheets · 23/09/2025 18:02

Babies born 2002, 2004 and 2008 - paracetamol was fine - it was all I was allowed following an appendectomy with number 3!

PepsiPepsiPepsiPepsi · 23/09/2025 18:02

Fine in 2011 are you thinking of ibuprofen ?

tinytemper66 · 23/09/2025 18:19

Yes

ThreePears · 23/09/2025 18:21

It was more than ok in 1999 - in fact I was advised that it was fine in pregnancy because it had already been in use for over 100 years and no side-effects had ever been identified. None whatsoever. And bearing in mind the issues with thalidomide in the late 1950's and early 60's that older posters will clearly remember, there had been a LOT of research into other medication taken during pregnancy.

So Trump is once again talking out of his monumentally productive arse.

tinaabbot · 23/09/2025 18:21

I am obviously thinking of something else, probably cold medicine or something for sleep. I had horrendous insomnia all through pregnancy so it was a bit of a blur of brain fog.

Not taking the current news in any way seriously or anything, just curiosity and couldn’t remember

Been pregnant in the last few years and once had a 40 degree fever with a chest infection. The Dr didn't hesitate in telling me to take paracetamol - getting the temp down was a much bigger consideration than anything else.

I think the general advice at the time was to only take it if necessary and for the shortest possible time but I that applies to some extent even when you aren't pregnant.

PrincessC0nsuelaBananaHammock · 23/09/2025 18:28

I was pregnant in 2003 and 2006, was definitely fine to take it then.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/09/2025 18:30

It was the only pain relief I was allowed in a 12 hour labour in 2003 so I think it was ok then!

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 23/09/2025 18:30

Actually I was given paracetamol in the ambulance when I was pregnant- for pain from pleurisy. And morphine for the same when I got to hospital, and antibiotics; child completely unaffected.

Peoplepleaserincrisis · 23/09/2025 18:31

Fine in 2013 and 2015 for me!

I was pregnant in 2008 and took paracetemol and anti histamines.
Pregnant in 2010 and also took codeine.

The pain I was in would have been more harmful to my babies.
