Was paracetamol always ok in pregnancy?

I don’t want to comment on the nonsense in the news at the moment, but it has got me thinking. I don’t remember being able to take paracetamol while pregnant. I definitely don’t remember being able to take anything for a cold. Am I misremembering? I was pregnant in 2008 and in Ireland. Anyone remember what the advice was back then?

I was pregnant in the 90s yes paracetamol was permitted, it is an recognised painkiller and used to reduce fever, the reason you might not have been permitted to take cold treatment is other ingredients, did you just not want/need paracetamol rather than not allowed.

Although cold medicine is paracetamol based, it’s not recommended in pregnancy as it usually contains caffeine.

It's nothing to do with the caffeine, it's the phenylephrine, etc. - it's suspected to cause defects.

Pregnant in 2005 in Ireland and paracetamol was the only painkiller allowed back then…not great when you have a bad back!

Yes. When I had early labour pains the midwife told me to take two Panadol and get a sleep before I came in.

That's the implication that Trump is trying to get everyone to think with his words isn't it, that neurodivergent children shouldn't exist. Which is ridiculous as they contribute an awful lot to the world and have done for centuries.

One more anecdata, I took no paracetamol in pregnancy and my child is ASD, ADHD, PDA, SPD, all the acronyms!

This is what makes me sad about the whole thing. My son is 18, incredibly intelligent, working, in a happy relationship with another autistic person, very sociable, learning to drive. I worry that all this loud media talk of cures etc will make him feel like there is something wrong with him. He struggles with his identity as it is right now. There have been some parts of being autistic that have made his life harder and I don't want to belittle the autistic people who are much more affected than him. But the narrative around this upsets me. It isn't a disease.

decongestants reduce bloodflow generally. so also the bloodflow to the fetus.
that's why they are contraindicated in pregnancy
