Comfort viewing TV/film download suggestions

singthing · 21/09/2025 15:27

I've got a whole load of stressful/busy trips and waiting around coming up in the next couple of months, so I am after suggestions of downloadable shows to pass the time please.

Criteria: Must be lightweight, easy to watch, no big brain power required. Film or TV, but easy to stop and start without having to rewind and catch up.

I have: BBC, Netflix, Disney, NowTV (Sky movies and entertainment channels) to choose from.

Examples of similar shows I have enjoyed previously: Sweet Magnolias, Chesapeake Shores, The West Wing (always!), Suits, BBC Pride and Prejudice, typical hallmark Christmas films. Was just about to start watching Virgin River, but may hold it till I start travelling.

Thank you!

Have you seen Firefly Lane on Netflix? There's two seasons and it's easy watching. Also Catastrophe if you want something funny. DH and I are watching Yellowstone, it's good so far!

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/09/2025 17:53

The American Office, Brooklyn 99, Parks and Rec are my comfiest watches. Seen them all several times. Man on the inside (I think that’s what it’s called) also very gentle and lovely. Recently watched The Good Life which also fit the bill.

Justtryingthis · 21/09/2025 17:57

Call the Midwife is lovely, gentle viewing and easy to dip in and out of.

Another vote for all creatures great and small. I watch it on Amazon acorn

Barmymarnie · 21/09/2025 18:53

Another vote for The American Office! If youve seen and liked the English version you have to perserve past the first episodes where you make comparisons, but after that it takes on a life of its own and is brill!

ButterPiesAreGreat · 21/09/2025 18:59

The Brokenwood Mysteries on U .. Will also be free and easy to download the app.

Silverbirchleaf · 21/09/2025 19:00

Shakespeare and Hathaway - superb series.- iplayer

Race across the world - player

Silverbirchleaf · 21/09/2025 19:02

The Wrong Paris - very cliche/cheesy, terrible-but-good film. Easy watching. - Netflix

heartsinvisiblefury · 21/09/2025 19:16

Schitts Creek ! You get to love the characters

singthing · 21/09/2025 19:51

Wooofff, loads of ideas thanks! 😍

SHORT(ish)LIST

  • Yellowstone: someone else mentioned this and I'd forgotten, thanks! Also adding Brooklyn 99, Parks and Rec
  • Brothers and Sisters, Normal People, Conversations with Friends, Everything I know, Mum, Modern Love
  • Perfect Strangers, Emma, Persuasion
  • All Creatures.... I am a child of the old BBC series, so I will trial a few of the new version before I go, and see how it lands!
  • Only Murders in the Building. Think I might have seen a spoiler but will double-check.
  • Here We Go, The Residence, We Are Lady Parts
  • The Residence, The Wrong Paris

NOT QUITE

  • Couldn't get on with: Firefly Lane, Gilmore Girls, or Good Wife, Derry Girls, Stranger Things, Mandy (I know they are wildly loved so it's definitely me!)
  • Catastrophe, Motherland, Amandaland, Fleabag, G&S: loved all of them but not quite long enough gap for a re-watch yet.
  • Probably also Call The Midwife and Desperate Housewives, but might add 1-2 seasons to see how it goes.
  • Schitts Creek I watched when it first came out and probably about a dozen times since! I can recite dialogue I love it so much!
  • RATW: Love it, but waiting for the celeb version!
  • American Office: is on one of the Sky channels so seen quite a lot of them lately.
  • Man on the inside was very gentle, watched that a few months ago.
  • Brokenwood, Shakespeare and Hathaway: not really a fan of police/detective dramas

Couple of suggestions from me in return are Friends Like Us and Nobody Wants This if you are looking for something!

I’m offended 😂

but seriously, Brokenwood is closer to Only Murders in the Building than it is a standard detective drama. It’s much lighter than many of the type.

Tutorpuzzle · 21/09/2025 20:28

I always mentIon Detectorists and This Country on these threads. Very gentle, very funny, and short episodes.

Edited because I just read your update 🤣. I also quite liked The Diplomat on Netflix. A bit silly, but watchable, and the presence of Rufus Sewell helps!

Newsenmum · 21/09/2025 20:31

Emily in Paris - very easy like a romcom
Anne with an E
downton abbey
schitts creek (sooo heartwarming)

CountryShepherd · 21/09/2025 20:43

If you like Fisk and Colin from Accounts, try Summer Love on Prime. Each is a separate story of people staying in the same holiday home. First episode has Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer in it.
