Comfort viewing TV/film download suggestions

singthing · 21/09/2025 15:27

I've got a whole load of stressful/busy trips and waiting around coming up in the next couple of months, so I am after suggestions of downloadable shows to pass the time please.

Criteria: Must be lightweight, easy to watch, no big brain power required. Film or TV, but easy to stop and start without having to rewind and catch up.

I have: BBC, Netflix, Disney, NowTV (Sky movies and entertainment channels) to choose from.

Examples of similar shows I have enjoyed previously: Sweet Magnolias, Chesapeake Shores, The West Wing (always!), Suits, BBC Pride and Prejudice, typical hallmark Christmas films. Was just about to start watching Virgin River, but may hold it till I start travelling.

Thank you!

Detectorists, Ghosts, Bob's Burgers, and Anne with an E are some of my favourite comfort shows. Those plus the Walking Dead got us through covid 😂

CountryShepherd · 22/09/2025 23:04

Our covid show was 5 series of Last Tango in Halifax - family comedy-drama with Anne Reid, Derek Jacobi and Sarah Lancashire. Available on iPlayer.

More amazing ideas thanks!

  • Brokenwood, This is us - I will try 1-2 and see how I like it!
  • Detectorists - didn't really like the premise, so it's on the long list.
  • This Country - got bored of the schtick after a few episodes.
  • The Diplomat was a slow burner for me but now I am avidly waiting for S3 to start (although I'll be away so will be able to binge a few when I return!)
  • Emily in Paris - got mixed review but might give it a go for these purposes
  • Downton - YES. I completely missed the entire phenomenon at the start so just disregarded it since, but I think that will be a perfect addition!
  • Love Begins - I think its on a watchlist somewhere so will dig it out. In a similar vein I was reminded of the original Cold Feet series too.
  • Mr Bigstuff - hmm, really not a fan of Danny Dyer's whole thing, another longlister.
  • Fisk - watched and loved. Think a new series just dropped too, so going on the list!
  • Colin from Accounts, The Good Place, Ghosts - just didn't gel with me. Also just don't like cartoons (Bob's Burgers).
  • Anne with an E looks a bit heavy.
  • Walking Dead - have been a fan since Don't Dead Open Inside! It kinda lost its way towards the end though...
  • Last Tango - I may be arrested for this, but I really can't stand Sarah Lancashire!

thank you all so much - I have got a brilliant list of things to definitely add, and things to give a few episodes a try before I commit either way!

Can't believe no one has suggested Ted Lasso yet! Although I'm not actually sure what platform it's on so it may have been ruled out on that basis. My other picks have mostly been mentioned but I'll add Mix Tape on iplayer and Jam & Jerusalem which is sadly only available on YouTube I think but all the episodes are there if you can sit through the ads and it's total comfort viewing, and very funny Smile

If you like Fisk and Colin from Accounts, try Summer Love on Prime. Each is a separate story of people staying in the same holiday home. First episode has Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer in it.

American Autos is good, I like Fisk and Colin.

The American Office, Brooklyn 99, Parks and Rec are my comfiest watches. Seen them all several times. Man on the inside (I think that’s what it’s called) also very gentle and lovely. Recently watched The Good Life which also fit the bill.

Good shout — A Man on the Inside was such a lovely show

Love Detectorists and Ghosts. Two of my all time favourite shows.

Also Derry Girls as a pp said. Just brilliant.

ZuluQ · 23/09/2025 16:05

If you can get amazon prime totally recommend the summer I turned pretty for easy escapism.

QueenOfCastille · 23/09/2025 16:13

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Death in Paradise (plus the spinoffs)
Darby and Joan
The Mallorca files
(there's a theme...)

Rivals on Disney Plus. Fantastic cast and brilliant 80s soundtrack (and outfits!)

Love Detectorists and Ghosts. Two of my all time favourite shows.

Yeah 😊
Give Detectorists a try, OP! It's the calmest thing, full of quiet silliness and beautifully written characters, and gorgeous countryside filming. Balm for the soul, honestly. I might have fallen a little bit in love with Mackenzie Crook off the back of it. I can't recommend it highly enough ❤️

cornbunting · 23/09/2025 16:43

Grace and Frankie is an excellent watch too, on Netflix. Very funny and with more emotional depth than it might have.

Arraminta · 23/09/2025 17:49

Another advocate of Detectorists. Sweetly funny. Lovely scenery. Gentle pace. It's like watching a lullaby.

singthing · 27/09/2025 13:44

Thanks again! I just came back to make myself a list and saw more replies!

  • Ted Lasso - I missed it when it first came out but I might give it a go if I can get it on the platforms I have
  • American Autos I LOVED!
  • Rivals is a great shout, not sure if I can d/l on Disney but will check.
  • OK OK you win, I will try Detectorists before I go and see....! 😆
  • Grace and Frankie I didn't get on with when I first tried it, but I might give it a second chance. I do like Lily Tomlin a lot.

Agree with lots of these but also want to suggest The Lady's Companion on netflix, it's Spanish but dubbed into English and very easy watching. Or Jane the Virgin?
