put the fire on for the first time last night and pie and mash for dinner, bloody lovely

GideonSmideon · 16/09/2025 13:54

It's not autumn yet 😉

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/09/2025 13:54

It’s warmed up again here! Was like November the other day. Maybe we’re going to get some ‘proper’ September weather after all.
Mind you it was nice the other night, having the electric blanket on, very cosy.

1AnotherOne · 16/09/2025 13:55

Currently on holiday in Turkey enjoying the 32c weather.

I do love autumn - when I get home I’m looking forward to nice long muddy dog walks, slow cooker dinners, Christmas preparation, blankets on the sofa with Bake Off and a new season of Married At First Sight starting.

Cinaferna · 16/09/2025 13:58

I picked apples from our tree and made a cinnamon and vanilla apple crumble.

Also made a spiced lentil and carrot soup.

DH made me a whisky hot toddy when I felt shivery after we got soaked by torrential rain out on a walk.

Had a long walk through the woods with an old friend this week.

Raked up the leaves and had a bonfire at the weekend.

EveryDayisFriday · 16/09/2025 14:00

I love spring and summer so have to make a real effort to embrace autumn.

I have switched up the candles from tropical bloom to spiced apples, put out the autumn decor and pumpkin cushions. I made a delicious stew yesterday. The winter duvet is on and I'm really enjoying the coziness.

ResusciAnnie · 16/09/2025 14:01

Candles on every evening - I just don't do it in summer for some reason! Probably because I find candles on in daylight a bit bleak.

My wardrobe has almost doubled in size since getting all my jumpers out.

Roast dinner season!

Love a crisp walk with the family in the fields opposite our house.

And of course, being inside while it hammers down with rain outside ❤ Or being out for a run in the rain and coming home and having a hot shower and getting in pajamas etc and sitting on the sofa all evening 😀

stayathomer · 16/09/2025 14:04

Put on a huge scarf and a hat! I look nuts but my word it was cosy!!! Also walked through fallen leaves and heard that satisfying crunch!

mondaytosunday · 16/09/2025 14:15

@GideonSmideonit was the meteorological autumn starts September 1. They do this as the equinox changes dates every year, and this simplifies it for record keeping. So meteorlogically winter starts Dec 1, Spring March 1 etc which makes more sense to me.
OP my guess been on, duvet on beds, throws in use! Plus summer bunting packed away Autumn wreath and garlands up.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 16/09/2025 14:16

Autumnal wax melts
Brand new blanket for the sofa
Beef stew and dumplings for dinner

Imisscoffee2021 · 16/09/2025 14:17

Baked a fruit loaf. My 2 year old picked up the first colourful kaleidoscope of an acer leaf, it smelled like wood smoke for the first time as people put their fires on, mornings have that crispy cool bite abd fresh scent.

AbbeyGrange · 16/09/2025 14:18

Sitting by my open log fire, my Glade Warm Apple Pie candles lit and enjoying a glass of Sherry, oh it was chucking it down too! ( This was Sunday btw) It was rather pleasant!

Whateverwillwedonow · 16/09/2025 14:20

We collected conkers with dgc and DD made me a big flask of soup (because she’s really sweet).

Any chance of the recipe for the dhal please?

I made it up

This is a rough idea of what I used:

200g red lentils
100g pearl barley
500g peeled and chopped butternut squash
very large onion
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
tablespoon tomato paste
Big piece of ginger or 2 blocks frozen crushed ginger
2 blocks frozen crushed garlic
heaped teaspoon turmeric
teaspoon mustard seeds
teaspoon cumin seeds
teaspoon ground corriander
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
large pinch ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon fenugreek powder
1 Green chillies chopped
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Maldon sea salt

chop onion
gently fry with mustard seeds and cumin seeds until softening
add crushed ginger and garlic and rest of spices. Cook on low for 10 minutes. Add tomato paste and butternut squash. Cook on low stirring frequently. Add lentils. Stir thoroughly
Add at least 1.5l of boiling water. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low. Keep an eye on it and cook unto lentils are pretty much soft. Add a wedge of lime and continue until lentils fully soft (you might need to keep topping up water - depends on how thick you likd your stew/soup)

Meanwhile cook the pearl barley as per packet instructions.

When everything ig cooked scoop out most of the squash pieces with some of the other ingredients abx blend. Add bavk into main soup/stew and add pearl barley. Season to taste

Cooking, cooking and cooking! This is my first autumn with a brand new kitchen and a very reliable oven so I might even try baking. Enjoying prepping the food looking out of the kitchen window and seeing the birds go nuts for the peanut butter pellets I’ve put out.

SoScarletItWas · 16/09/2025 15:02

I had a delicious maple hazelnut hot chocolate while out shopping.

I’ve got a pan of tomato sauce bubbling away for a mushroom and spinach lasagne tonight.

Sofa blanket has been deployed.

Love the coziness. I’m an October baby so autumn through and through.

The only thing I'm enjoying and looking forward to is that we might eventually get enough rain to fill our extremely depleted reservoirs so that I can enjoy a bath guilt free.

I don't like candles or pumpkin spices.
You also live somewhere nicer than I do.

I'm hoping for a bit of Indian summer.

SpiralSister · 16/09/2025 15:23

Wow, thanks @spicetails! I really appreciate you typing all that out!

Will def try this weekend.

Brancaster is several hours from me - I drove it just to escape the hole I live in.

Hope you manage to find some joy - and I agree about the weather: it’s been ridiculously dry this year. If I still had horses I’d be worrying about hay supply.
