He was 89 and died in his sleep.

RIP RR.

My A level English teacher loved him and we watched The Great Gatsby more times than was strictly necessary.
Fond memories 🙂

Pedallleur · 16/09/2025 17:33

Look at the films mentioned. Forgot about Meryl Streep. He got to work with the v.best of women leads. I'll include Demi Moore as well.

bruffin · 16/09/2025 17:34

RIP
Strange we watched The Natural the other night. I saw it at the cinema when it came out and DH had never seen it.
He was gorgeous looking man and a great actor

DarkChandelier · 16/09/2025 17:46

I wonder what he was dreaming of

HerewardtheSleepy · 16/09/2025 17:57

All these posts and nobody has mentioned that he starred in the best western ever made.

Jeremiah Johnson!

RIP.

Feels weird no Gene Hackman, now no Robert Redford. They did Downhill Racer together. Stars of my youth all passing away.

EsmaCannonball · 16/09/2025 18:16

Oh, I just love him and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and he was so gorgeous in The Way We Were, but my favourite is Barefoot in the Park. You just don't get proper 'film star' film stars these days.

paranoidnamechanger · 16/09/2025 18:39

I feel the same when Maggie Smith died last year - like a landmark has fallen and it won’t be replaced.

All the Presidents Men is my favourite film he’s appears in closely followed by The Way We Were, which I may buy later as a digital copy. Of the films he directed, Ordinary People and Quiz Show are classics. Setting up and maintaining Sundance, he was a pivotal part of American cinema because he helped change it for the better. What an extraordinary legacy he leaves!

Clint Eastwood (nearly 100) and Jack Nicholson left.
Never aware of any scandals about him (and hopefully won't)

There’s quite a few American actors of Redford’s age still with us - Dick Van Dyke, Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman…with a total age of nearly 300!

Daphnedot · 16/09/2025 18:53

Robert Redford and Paul Newman were the most gorgeous men of all time in my opinion.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 16/09/2025 18:55

Very sad, but what a lovely life, and what a lovely man.

I was about to ask why you are lumping Morgan Freeman in with the other two, as he can’t be more than 70 - but then Googled and he’s 88 😳

Robert Redford is just one of those names and faces that always seem to have been around. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen him in anything - I’m not fond of the old-style American classics - but he was such a recognisable image.

Agree. Love Barbra Streisand

Adore her and The Way We Were. He was so talented and absolutely beautiful. A sad loss.

CheerfulBunny · 16/09/2025 19:07

Such a handsome and charming man. He must have been absolutely faint-making in real life. Those beautiful blue eyes.. sigh.

justasking111 · 16/09/2025 19:39

Three days of the Condor I watched again recently. An underrated film

Barefootinthecarpark · 16/09/2025 19:43

All The President’s Men. Fab, fab, fab!

Peridot1 · 16/09/2025 19:56

Very sad indeed but going in your sleep is definitely the way to go.

he was such a handsome man. My mum loved him in lots but especially The Way We Were. We played Barbra Streisand singing it at her funeral.

cloudjumper · 16/09/2025 20:20

I just loved The Electric Horseman. And Out of Africa. And Sneakers!

Perhaps because, for some odd reason, it is hardly ever shown on telly.

BeaLola · 16/09/2025 20:48

So sad but what a lovely way for him to die.

I can't believe I have never seen Out of Africa - may have something to do with the fact I had to learn and play the clarinet concerto from it when at school

I remember him in the Horse Whisperer with a very young Scarlett Johanssen - saw it with my Mum who wanted Sam Neil and Robert Redford roles swapped aa she preferred Sam Neil ...

TheScottishPlay · 16/09/2025 20:50

Another icon away. Loved him in Barefoot In The Park.

evilharpy · 16/09/2025 21:01

Absolutely gutted. I saw him tap dancing in Legal Eagles with Daryl Hannah and Debra Winger when I must have been about 12 and that was it, love at first sight and over 30 years later I still love him just as much. He really had it all. So glad he went in his sleep.

SwedishEdith · 16/09/2025 21:09

I was surprised Bob Woodward is/was older than Robert Redford. He posted a lovely tribute to him today on Instagram.
