When did you go gray?

Just that, really. How long did it take from the first grays to being fully gray?

I’m 65 and have just started going a little white at the sides. Redhead though so I believe our hair keeps its colour longer.

aintnothinbutagstring · 15/09/2025 20:57

40 and around 15-20% grey (very rough estimate) I have mousy brown hair and the grey is actually white. Have the odd very white streak. I've been growing out my natural hair for about 3yrs now as got tired of dying it and it going brassy/grey coming through. Needs a chop of residual bleached ends but I like my natural colour and would welcome more white hair coming through.

Seawolves · 15/09/2025 20:58

62, still not grey.

traintolalaland · 15/09/2025 21:01

First couple came through in my 20s, 40s now and about 30%. Dd is 9 and has one or two random ones.

Namechange1086 · 15/09/2025 21:04

57 and have the odd grey hair

GreyRooted · 15/09/2025 21:05

I started going grey at about 37 and then they got more coverage as time went on. I started to let it all grow out just before the pandemic and I was fully grey (silver) within a couple of years. I’m nearly 50 now.

notanothernamechangemother · 15/09/2025 21:10

I haven't yet 🤞 I'm 47 with strawberry blonde hair which I think goes grey/white later than most. At least that makes up a little for burning like crazy in the sun!

Jo1667 · 15/09/2025 21:38

I developed a mallen streak on the right side of my head. The first I knew of it was the first visit to my hairdresser after lockdown and she shouted in shock "you've got a mallen streak!!" I'd not noticed it as I've got naturally thick curly hair that grows in spirals and is a mousy brown colour that gets lighter in summer. The mallen streak starts in my eyebrow. I was 48.
So I don't look really weird, I use a pencil to colour in (both) my brows and have my roots done every month. Now 4 years on, the mallen streak is still there but have grey around temples.

keffie12 · 15/09/2025 22:18

Found my first grey in my 50s which horrified me. It was at a root has I colour my hair various colours or did.

I tend to stick around copper colours which is my original colouring, now and don't go for fashion colours anymore.

I expect there is more grey under my colour than will ever see the light of day.

My roots are redone at the hairdresser's every 6 weeks

buffyfaithfredwesley · 15/09/2025 22:22

41 and no grey but my hair is fading - redhead

LittlePineapple · 16/09/2025 07:31

I didn't realise I had technically gone grey early. I assumed most people my age had died their hair. 😬.

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/09/2025 07:33

Late 50s. No grey yet.

EBearhug · 16/09/2025 07:40

First one at 20. Became noticeable in my 30s. Now 53, quite grey at the temples, but still more brown than grey overall. Have never dyed it.

BCBird · 16/09/2025 07:42

First few grey hairs mid 40s. Noticed a few more 10 years later after a period of immense stress. Will consider dyeing but as I've got two big bald patches, hidden when hair tied back, due to alopecia, I'm not 100 percent sure this an option. One of my older friends said she felt like people spoke down to her when she was fully grey than when she dyed her hair🙄

Ollybob · 16/09/2025 07:43

48, only the odd one I catch in the light.
My sister is 43 and is probably 30% grey.

PaddlingSwan · 16/09/2025 07:51

66, have the odd few white hairs, but they are individual, so more or less unnoticeable and they tend to come and go.
Got my first white hair aged 15 when I was under a lot of stress, but it went away again.

damekindness · 16/09/2025 08:07

I’m 64 and as yet no grey hairs. Bit fed up with people assuming I dye my hair - I normally ask them why I’d choose to dye my hair this dull mousy brown? I have children with greyer hair than me.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 16/09/2025 08:13

Started at 17 like my mum. Except she had jet black hair and I was blonde. DH, the bastard, didn't start until his late 50s.

First grey threads at my temples in my mid-teens when I had brown hair. Now early 60s and I have gone blonde and not grey. Very strange!

Exactly the same situation here! First grey hair spotted at 16. Now nothing left of my original black hair but what’s grown through is more blonde than grey in most lights and silvery white in strong sunlight.

I've never met anyone else this has happened to. Mine glitters and sparkles in raking light!

Ooh me too!

Proper platinum blonde - real Hollywood, Grace Kelly blonde I love it!

First greys spotted in early 20s.

My DM was a strawberry blonde and still wasn’t grey at 80! Had a falling out with a neighbour who accused her of lying when saying that she didn’t dye it.
When Dm died at 97 she still wasn’t properly grey - just a faded greyish sort of mouse.

Started noticing grey hairs at about 13. Im 38 now and im probably about 60% grey?

This is similar to me. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one!

Shinysunday · 16/09/2025 12:03

Mid fifties it started and 10 years later it’s about thirty percent

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 16/09/2025 12:36

I’m early 40s and started to notice grey hair about 2 years ago. I’m about 10% grey with my natural hair but I dye it.
