What to put on downstairs toilet shelf?

Never had a shelf before, TP is on a little storage stand. I am not much into trinkets. What would you put on it, especially bottom one?

A reed diffuser (for obvious reasons) and another little ornament maybe.

dailyconniptions · 15/09/2025 14:57

Couple of rolled clean towels for sink?

AltitudeCheck · 15/09/2025 14:58

A small green hanging plant

I have a reed diffuser and poo pourri spray on mine

BadActingParsley · 15/09/2025 15:12

Or take it down and put a great big picture up.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 15/09/2025 15:25

Small books to read.

SeaAndStars · 15/09/2025 15:26

Lovely hand cream. A funny photo of you and your family.

Scented candle on top shelf to light when you have guests.

ShodAndShadySenators · 15/09/2025 15:30

A fake pendent plant. And possibly a reed diffuser or similar on the top shelf.

(Not pot pourri, it gets dusty and it's difficult to clean.)

CharlieKirkRIP · 15/09/2025 15:32

It’s just a dust gatherer I’d you have to think what to put on it that is only going to be of decorative value.,

I would get rid of it altogether and put a picture up.

Unforgettablefire · 15/09/2025 15:39

A nice little trailing plant?

LimeJellyforBrains · 15/09/2025 15:43

I would pop my 3 spare toilet rolls on there instead of where they are currently stored. I wouldn't like having 'naked' toilet rolls down there where I would be afraid they would get dusty/dirty/splashed.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/09/2025 15:49

Get rid. Replace with picture.

GameOfJones · 15/09/2025 15:51

We have a very similar set up in our downstairs loo. On the top shelf we have a reed diffuser. TKMaxx are good to stock up on them cheaply.

On the bottom shelf I keep a wicker basket which stores small items that are useful but I'd rather keep out of the way e.g. a crevice brush for cleaning round the taps, a microfibre cloth for cleaning quickly and a packet of Bloo tablets for occasionally dropping into the cistern.

SmellsLikeVictory · 15/09/2025 16:57

Thank you, all. Some great ideas.

I cannot get rid, it’s brand new - DH complained he does not get to decorate, so we agreed he has freedom to do what he likes. So, instead of pale blue with James Bond posters we now have Egyptian Cotton and a twee shelf.

Head down to The Range - they have all manner of cheap but very attractive ornaments that are nature-inspired or on a nautical theme that might fit the bill. Less is more though. Agree with a pp about a reed diffuser on the top shelf. You don't need to use the diffuser, you can buy a vase you like better and decant the diffuser liquid into that.

IMissSparkling · 15/09/2025 17:14

Very disappointed that it's the lights reflected in the cactus ornaments and not, as I thought, googly eyes.

Overtheatlantic · 15/09/2025 17:22

Hand towels and poo pouri

Hand towels and poo pouri

😂😂

Shortdaysalready · 15/09/2025 17:28

Oh I would be putting lovely hand creams on it. And nicely packaged good quality soaps. Possibly a decorative makeup mirror on the top shelf - if there isn't already a mirror on the wall.
I'm afraid I 'm a sucker for nice toiletries

FelicitysSweetOrchard · 15/09/2025 17:37

Baby wipes on the bottom shelf

JiminyBillyBobByng · 15/09/2025 17:44

One or two out of: little plant in pot; small framed picture; candle in holder; couple of books; nice lidded box containing something useful.

I'm not into ornaments either, and those are pretty much the only things I'll put on shelves or surfaces (give or take a vase of flowers, which wouldn't fit here).

123ZYX · 15/09/2025 17:57

If your DH decided he was taking charge of decorating, I would tell him he needs to finish which includes not being left with empty shelves

Titasaducksarse · 15/09/2025 17:58

I find any ornaments or nik naks in a toilet just gross due to hygiene and what sprays back out of the loo when it's flushed.

margegunderson · 15/09/2025 18:01

A 💩

INeedAnotherName · 15/09/2025 18:16

I agree with pp. Get those toilet rolls off the floor where they could get splashed and put them on the bottom shelf. Then some form of smell deodoriser on top.
