What to put on downstairs toilet shelf?

Never had a shelf before, TP is on a little storage stand. I am not much into trinkets. What would you put on it, especially bottom one?

@123ZYX He has asked for contact details of my framing guy to frame some old footballers photos for the long wall. I saw the photos, ugly fuckers, to be hung opposite the mirror, so I will have to see them twice. I am hurrying to fill the shelf with something I can bear. I love my husband, so I praise it all and only bitch behind his back.

Why though? He has appalling taste in decor, and you’ve already suffered through the James Bond poster era. Why would anyone think that football posters were an appropriate decoration once you’re past the age of 14? Tell him he has all the taste of a blind hedgehog in a bag and you don’t plan to wee while looking at Virgil Van Dijk’s mug.

Jellycat loo roll, trailing plant or (if it was me) a little collection of Lego minifigs/vintage toy people.

@BluePeril James Bond prints are mine, they were movie posters in cartoon style, I love them and will rehome.

I have a similar set up to this in the downstairs toilet. Instead of the towels I have one of the pictures from Etsy. I also have a large reed diffuser in place of one of the vases. I think a basket with sanitary products (if you use them) is so handy, saves going upstairs where they used to be all in the bathroom cabinet.

I find any ornaments or nik naks in a toilet just gross due to hygiene and what sprays back out of the loo when it's flushed.

Edited

close the lid before flushing?

FusionChefGeoff · 15/09/2025 19:52

Money plant (hanging) and a spare clean towel

stample · 15/09/2025 20:04

In my downstairs loo we have a ledge where the sister is built into… annoying but ok. We’ve got a reed diffuser, air freshener, flushable wipes and a small pot of tampons. Anything that would help a guest in need!

Whatwouldnanado · 15/09/2025 20:10

Yes take it down and replace with a picture.
Then put a towel rail over the radiator, and put the shelf above that with reed diffuser, fake plant sea shells whatever.

WilfredsPies · 15/09/2025 20:24

I would get rid of the shelf, panel halfway up in a dark colour and then have a really opulent wallpaper on the walls and ceiling and put either a huge mirror or a picture (of anything but a footballer) in the place of the shelf.

He needs to think bigger than a 12 year old boy’s idea of a stylish room. He’s got a blank canvas and it’s painful that he’s sticking to something so…. blank.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/09/2025 20:42

A chess clock that you hit at the start of 'the process'. Just to introduce some competiveness into the household.

Plus, I would remove the cruet set from the top shelf and put it back in the dining room.

WonderingWanda · 15/09/2025 20:43

A couple of rolled up towels like the hairdressers. Or some posh tissues in case anyone wants to blow their nose on something soft. A basket of San pro.

Thank you, all. Some great ideas.

I cannot get rid, it’s brand new - DH complained he does not get to decorate, so we agreed he has freedom to do what he likes. So, instead of pale blue with James Bond posters we now have Egyptian Cotton and a twee shelf.

Why isn't he deciding what goes on it then?

SmellsLikeVictory · 16/09/2025 07:15

@LizzyEm I honestly do not know.
