Aldi v Lidl

Is there much difference between Aldi and Lidl? I've been shopping mostly at Lidl for the last couple of years (with Tesco for the bits I can't get at Lidl) but I've moved now and the Lidl is about a 20min drive but there is an Aldi a lot closer. So far I've stuck to Lidl as I had to go that way each week anyway but that's changed and the drive is becoming a pain (roadworks). Are they much of a muchness? Or would you prefer one over the other and why? Does Aldi have a loyalty scheme? I quite like my Lidl plus coupons.

I much prefer Aldi. DH prefers Lidl.
I find Lidl more confusing and more rubbish on Gf stuff. He likes the pastry bit and randomness

I prefer Aldi in general, but LOVE Lidl for the bakery alone 😂 I prefer the taste of the Aldi own brands (like the cola, and some of the veggie/vegan frozen stuff)

Lidl for the Sunday opening hours (11-5 here and I often work until 06:00 on a Sunday morning and then go to bed-so it gives me a bit more time to get to it.
Aldi for everything else. It could be store-specific though. My nearest Lidl is in a very grotty area and not a nice place to be.
Aldi however have began selling battered brussels sprouts which has made me think that whomever is in charge of their own-brand frozen goods needs a serious mental health intervention and to probably check if anything else is wrong with them.

Much prefer Aldi than Lidl. Only go to Lidl to get odds & sods. Shop in Aldi weekly.

We shop Aldi every week and we can get almost everything we need there. Only tried to do a food shop once at Lidl whilst on holiday and managed fine. Bit of a weird layout but may have just been that store. They have a bakery section though which Aldi doesn’t.

IMO Aldi own brands much better quality than Lidl (much better and cheaper than many own store brands infact)
Lidl bakery is v good and also sells much greater selection of branded goods.

Our Lidl and Aldi are opposite each other. I probably prefer Aldi but get lured into Lidl by Lidl Plus coupons / offers. I do find quite a lot of their products interchangeable with the following exceptions:
-dog will only eat Lidl's gravy bones!
-only Lidl do fruit and nut muesli
-better seasonal veg at Lidl (e.g. Padron peppers and beetroot)
-Aldi's smoked or peppered mackerel fillets are far superior to the inedible mush from Lidl
-I can only get organic milk in Aldi

Both great stores though and I rarely go to Tesco / Sainsbury's (other local supermarkets) anymore

Aldi is a little further than Lidl for me, but it has express self check outs so gets my custom over my local Lidl which does not - I rarely do a big shop, just lots of little ones.

Lidl for me…the bakery gives it the edge over Aldi.

I shop at both every week as I prefer some of the products in each of the stores.

I find our local Aldi store cleaner and the fresh stock is better rotated than Lidl but in my experience a lot of it comes down to management. In Lidl there are often stock cages blocking the aisles in the middle of the day.

I think the manager in Aldi is more on the ball.

I go to both. I find Lidl slightly better value because of the app and the coupons. I prefer the Aldi freezer section and think they have better ready meals and desserts though. I do like the Lidl bakery.

Weekly shop at Aldi - like their posh range, good value food and we can get everything except cat food - because my cats are snobby gits. Don’t find Lidl had as much or is a good value- but I hope they do their Lush dupes again this Christmas!

We were always Tesco/Lidl combo. Then an Aldi opened near as well so we tried that and have never looked back at Lidl. Much nicer to shop in. Cleaner. More open. Nicer staff. Great products. Now my DS works at Sainsbury’s delivering whilst at uni so our combo is now Sainsbury’s/Aldi …. 15% colleague discount too good to miss. 👌🏽

Aldi beats lidl for us. Although a lidl bakery trip is worth it occasionally

And I find all lidl have a funky smell ( been in prob 10+) it puts me off.

I am always really curious @RenegadeKeeblerElf what are these mystery "bits" people cannot find in aldi or lidl? I have never not been able to do a full shop.

Aldi have been trialing in-store bakeries and are now rolling them out in more stores, our local one recently had one installed.

My cats eat a branded food and refuse Aldi cat food, I prefer Fairy liquid (the new one lasts me for months) and the new short cycle laundry liquid, I prefer branded vodka and I drink BOB skimmed milk!

Various branded items that my children with food issues won't have generic versions of mainly.

Both dire. I dont use either of them.

Sounds like Aldi might be worth a try - I don't tend to get much from the bakery and that seems to be the main difference.

I prefer Lidl, firstly because I only like fresh bread and other bakery products.

This is probably area specific, but my all local Lidls have excellent quality fruit and vegetables, while local Aldis are not as good. Additionally, my favourite Lidl store has a large packing area at the end of the tills so it is much easier to manage if I am doing a big shop.

I use both, I think Aldi has more variety but their car park is gridlocked on weekends and there's always some very rough characters about, also puts me off when the staff stand on the fridge shelf edge to stock up and talk to each other constantly on the headsets.
Lidl on the other hand is a newer bigger store and has lots of room and generally good stock availability, the bakery is very good though.
