Aldi v Lidl

Is there much difference between Aldi and Lidl? I've been shopping mostly at Lidl for the last couple of years (with Tesco for the bits I can't get at Lidl) but I've moved now and the Lidl is about a 20min drive but there is an Aldi a lot closer. So far I've stuck to Lidl as I had to go that way each week anyway but that's changed and the drive is becoming a pain (roadworks). Are they much of a muchness? Or would you prefer one over the other and why? Does Aldi have a loyalty scheme? I quite like my Lidl plus coupons.

My aldi now has a bakery ❤️ that used to be the deciding factor between aldi and lidl for me so now they are much of a muchness. Lidl stopped doing tomato and goats cheese flatbreads which I was very sorry about.

I prefer Aldi for my weekly shop. They have more choice than Lidl. Dd is vegetarian and their veggie range is much much better than Lidl’s. If I go to Lidl I need to also go to another shop as can’t get everything.

life does have the better bakery though.

Most of the shopping I do at Lidl. Love their bakery! Use Lidl Plus app.

I probably go to Aldi once a month for different bits. Though the problem with all the Aldi stores within 7 miles - I have 7 to choose from, their staff are not on the ball with getting rid of SRP - shelf ready packaging - the cardboard trays that tins, jars sit on. As I remember the baked beans had about 10 empty trays. Plus customers chuck empty SRPs on the floor. I have never seen so many stuff dumped in the wrong temperature areas at any other supermarket chain. Obviously it’s bad at others, but Aldi’s is about 20 times worse. Butter in the microwave rice, frozen pizza dumped in the milk etc. People need to understand that unless they put things back in the right temperature section (ideally in the right place) - these things will be disposed of. Waste increases prices.

I think the newer stores are better than the older ones

With Lidl Plus app, when you have your free sweet treat from bakery, free fruit/veg and other free stuff and bought a few products in that category, scan the most expensive item you have, scan your card. End transaction. Then scan the rest on a new transaction.

Otherwise, you get the cheapest item free! As my friend discovered. She bought about 6 different fruits and only got 69p off - for plums which were pick of the week. She bought some blueberries for £2.49. She could have had those for free.

Traditionally, the point of the discounters was to be less about service and more about price. So you get what you pay for. In a rush? Want specialist ingredients? Shop elsewhere.
