We are located over an hour away from both, but marginally closer to my parents.

We lived in a different country to both for most of our adult lives. My PIL were marginally closer to the airport.

Chobby · 10/09/2025 10:06

Parents. It used to be my in laws but they moved abroad when DD1 was a baby.

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/09/2025 10:07

Closer to in-laws but we don’t see them.

InMyHealthyEra · 10/09/2025 10:07

In laws. My parents live in a different country

BusWankers · 10/09/2025 10:08

in-laws 7 minute walk away, mum is 45 minutes drive.

I see my mum more probably 6 times a month, in laws once

I meant to add in the OP -

Was this a conscious decision or life just worked out that way?

In laws live about a 4 min walk away. Jon contact with them. My parents live about a 10 minute drive away in opposite directions (my house is in the middle, they are separated) See them individually every other day.

EffectivelyDecluttering · 10/09/2025 10:11

Parents 20 miles ILs 100 miles

We consciously wanted to be closer to the in laws, but they decided to move to another country.

NerrSnerr · 10/09/2025 10:12

In-laws live about 90 minutes away, parents about 5 hours. I see my parents Christmas, Easter and Summer. I see my in-laws probably every 2-3 months.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/09/2025 10:13

About 5 minutes from my parents and about 10 from my in laws

FlowersInPots · 10/09/2025 10:14

Now, ILs but that’s recent. We’ve almost always lived within 30 mins of my parents while ILs (seperately) lived several hours away.
2 years ago FIL moved literally 5 minutes away.

Its a conscious decision of DHs not to live close to MIL, a decision of FIL to move nearer DH and his siblings and a decision of mine and DHs to stay here knowing my parents are pretty close by.

Thanks @Chobby !

Ours was a semi conscious decision.
And none of us are likely to move again.
Well, having said that, my in-laws have been making moving closer to us noises for the last 5 years... (they moved away to their current location after retirement, think they're regretting the distance as they're aging).
My parents still live in my childhood home which is nice 🙂

In-laws about 3 minutes away. My parents about 5 hours. PIL moved to be near us 5 years ago. My parents hoping to but can't sell house. None of the 6 of us live near where any of us grew up.

mindutopia · 10/09/2025 11:32

We live about an hour drive from MIL and an 8 hour flight from my family.

I’m NC with my family now, but when I wasn’t my dc still probably saw my family and had a closer relationship with my mum than with MIL. My mum is highly dysfunctional (hence NC), but she was at least fun and made an effort. MIL is low effort and I think a bit bored by them.

GlowWorm13 · 10/09/2025 11:43

We live a 5 minute drive away from both of them, and it’s lovely having both sets of parents (well just our mums as both our fathers have died now) so close. We keep thinking of moving further away as we can get a better house for the money 20-30 minutes away, but being so close to our mum’s is what’s keeping us in our town.

newrubylane · 10/09/2025 11:43

In laws are 2 hours away, parents 3 hours, in opposite directions Ideally I'd like to be closer to both but obviously that's not possible. We live where we met, so not really a conscious decision, except that we agree wouldn't really want to move closer to one and further from the other.

garlictwist · 10/09/2025 12:15

I'm 10 mins from my parents in the car - about 25 mins walk. MIL lives an hour away but works with DH every day so he sees him there. PIL lives five hours away in Inverness so rarely see him.

CharliesAngles · 10/09/2025 19:30

Yes, parents and in-laws are in opposite directions too.
It would make DH's life easier if in-laws did move closer.

In-laws live much closer. Wasn’t a conscious decision, they just live closer to London. They do childcare once a week, absolutely wasn’t expected but we appreciate it so much!

We see my parents around 4 times a year, which includes a fortnight holiday. We speak and FaceTime a few times a week.

Enko · 10/09/2025 19:37

Well i moved to a different country so we lived closer to mil and fil. Both are dead now but we live close to sil. See her about 3 times a year.

My dads we see every 2-3 years mum has been dead 10 years

EveryDayisFriday · 10/09/2025 19:43

Mum is 3 streets away - she moved to my village after her divorce.

Dad is abroad

PIL are in the same village since they were first married, 30-60m drive away dependent on motorway traffic.

LemondrizzleShark · 10/09/2025 19:46

In laws!

However we see my side every fortnight (50 miles away), and in-laws twice a year (7 miles away). Their choice not ours, they off enjoying their retirement and aren’t very family-focused.

Vodkamartini3olives · 10/09/2025 19:52

In laws. It was a very conscious decision. I moved to US to be with my husband. My family live in UK.

Sassylovesbooks · 10/09/2025 19:55

I can walk to my parents in 10 minutes. My FIL lived for many years in Spain, and now lives back in the UK about 70 miles from us.
