Just had to put a food shop on the credit card, fed up!

We don’t get paid until next Thursday. I’d ran out of essentials like coffee, hand wash, toothpaste, chips etc. Needed the usual packed lunch stuff too. £78 in Asda. I have £82 in the account until payday but need to keep it in as direct debits due day before payday.

I just feel bleugh. We both work full time and having to put a weekly food shop on a credit card is just soul destroying.

anyone else feel like this?

"Chips - maybe check behind your kids ears to see if he’s growing some potatoes"

...you think that was a serious suggestion?
It was a list of ludicrous suggestions clearly.

I was referring to the stealing comment.

I use a bar of Dove soap in the shower, and it doesn't last long.

Those dive bars aren't soap... Just moisturising bars.
They don't clean...

I feel your pain, I have just started a second job to try to get some more money in the bank.

I've spent most of my life doing side hustles.

A wee update. We had a bit of a windfall this weekend and I’ve managed to pay off that said shop on the credit card. Beyond chuffed!

That’s handy /well timed

what happened @whatsausername

Spiderx · 14/09/2025 08:10

We pay for everything with credit card, even things like council tax. We get points which add up to about £150 a year and our money stays in a ( crap) easy access savings account until we need to pay the credit card bill ( always in full so don't pay interest) so we earn a tiny bit of money on that too ! No shame in doing that ...just play the system but be disciplined and you can even come out with a ,small, profit !

Weenurse · 14/09/2025 08:17

@Spiderx we do the same. Everything on cc but it gives us extra points , paid off in full each month.

Working in a petrol station, touring the local pubs and Brixton prison officers club selling seafood. Cat feeding, dog walking, leaflet delivering and overtime at my full time job when it was available. Working in Woolworth's as a Saturday girl before I left school. In this way I was able to buy my home which I could not have done otherwise.

So, second jobs or part-time jobs, not really 'hustles'. 😁

I believe the word has a variety of meanings including working energetically.

All of those are simply jobs though, they're not hustles.

I mean that the term 'job" covers those scenarios.
It's admirable to take on on extra jobs, of course.

So if I manifest a nice piece of fish it will replace the mince?

I’ve been trying to manifest a lottery win for years. Still tryingConfused

MILLOMAN · 14/09/2025 14:05

Youll have both

I took advice from the posters on here and I’ve went to Aldi for a change. Going to make that my supermarket of choice for the month and see if it makes a difference running up to payday!

👍👍
just run past and dont look at that middle aisle 😁

Bluelenses · 20/09/2025 14:14

Can't DH and DS's haircuts wait until payday??

coffee - Stockwells at Tesco @£1.15 will tide you over for the time being.
hand wash - a bar of soap would suffice
toothpaste - Sainsburys own costs 30p
chips - buy a 2.5kg bag and make homemade wedges or chips in the oven

Avoid the middle aisles. That way lies ruin 🤣

Use the discount shops like pound land and you will likely find the same nescafe coffee is cheaper.

Large HP Brown Sauce £4 in Tesco - £2 in Poundland!
