Just had to put a food shop on the credit card, fed up!

We don’t get paid until next Thursday. I’d ran out of essentials like coffee, hand wash, toothpaste, chips etc. Needed the usual packed lunch stuff too. £78 in Asda. I have £82 in the account until payday but need to keep it in as direct debits due day before payday.

I just feel bleugh. We both work full time and having to put a weekly food shop on a credit card is just soul destroying.

anyone else feel like this?

Magic time wand - that is so true
OP it is shit. I've done this for years and put parking on CC before work paid expenses back. Getting a teeny bit easier now kids have just left uni but when you're tired you defo feel miserable about it. I work blumin hard and nothing to show for it
I enjoy simple pleasures

The OP could help herself if she was prepared to make a few changes and a few sacrifices. But she's not.

It doesn't.

Also, it is cheaper than handwash, and lasts longer.

I am just hearing excuses from posters who are moaning about their lack of money, but CBA to do anything to change their situation

It does go to slime, I've tried various bars and it's always the same issue, liquid soap works out better. I have a refillable pump and buy it in the bags when it's on offer or a large container if I see one that lasts the best part of a year.

You need to buy a better soap. Dove does not go to slime, and it's only 50-60p a bar. It will only sort of 'melt' a bit if you leave it in the soap tray with water underneath it.

Why not just tell the op not to eat for a couple of weeks and just drink water, she will be fine I’m sure,
they both work full time why shouldn’t she have coffee, the price of coffee has gone up massively!
the cost of rent is nearly a full time workers salary,

It's exactly dove I am talking about, I love the smell of it but it goes to slime even when I air dry it and ensure there isn't any water in the dish. It shrinks to nothing very quickly indeed. Sorry but you are wrong here.

Noodles1234 · 10/09/2025 16:41

I hear you OP.

DH and I both work full time and yes buy all food and cook from scratch, we are inventive, have minimal wastage and use every last bit we can / buy everything on offer etc. Buy bars of soap / use comparison sites and main sites, in fact we have worked out we can’t really save on anything more.

Inflation has gone up, Supermarket Brand Salad Cream was 80p and is now £1.60, just an example but everything has gone up, wages are not keeping up and interest rates will have to increase. Even a birthday treat to McDonalds was shocking in ££.

My parents didn’t have it easy either, but they were more well off at our age than we are, ie had paid their mortgage off whereas we are 16 years away from that.

I don't mean to derail, but I keep my Dove soap in the actual shower and it still retains its integrity. As long as you don't leave it sitting in water it's fine.

I do not find that to be true at all.

I do not find that to be true at all.

What do expect people to say? 'Oh actually yeah you're right, I'm LYING... Yes, all bars of soap DO turn to slime in the blink of an eye!'

Just because it allegedly happens to you, you seem to be having some difficulty accepting that it's not the same for others. How odd.

Accept the fact that not all soap bars turn to slime, and stop trying to dismiss other peoples experiences as 'not true.'

And try and buy a better soap - as I said, like DOVE. It's not even that expensive. Like the pp said, it does 'retain its integrity' and each bar lasts 3-4 times longer than a bottle of shower gel (for me,) and it's half the price.

CozyCoupe · 10/09/2025 16:55

I have no idea why people keep banging on about soap. Over the course of a year, buying bar soap instead of liquid probably saves you a couple of quid. It's an absolutely ridiculous example. Plus it's gross!

🙄 FFS! There's just no helping some people.

If you think buying bars of soap instead of bottled of shower gel only saves 'a couple of quid a year,' there is no hope for you, because you clearly haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

Good luck. You'll need it.

Why are you getting so worked up about this? I don't agree with you and think you are wrong. If it upsets you so much then walk away.

IAmNotASheep · 10/09/2025 16:58

is this a bad time to mention it 🤣🤣

Swapping branded coffee to an own brand coffee is a sensible cost saver if you need to cut back.

Buying bar soap will only save pennies. Plus 2 working adults should be able to buy the soap they want, ffs.

I cannot possibly be wrong. I am stating my experience. And it is different to yours. You seem to be finding it hard to accept that other people have different experiences to you, and are basically saying anyone who has a different experience is a liar. Are you this argumentative and awkward in real life?

Sounds like YOU are the one getting 'worked up' dear. Wink

'Buying bars of soap instead of shower gel will only save you pennies' is definitely WRONG.

As I said, there is no help for some on here. I'll leave you to it. I have better things to do with my life than argue with randoms on the internet about fucking SOAP! 😂

Basic shower gel from Aldi costs around 45p a bottle.

No need to wish me luck, I'm fine. But you can't seem to see that 2 working adults shouldn't have to be counting pennies like this and should be able to buy the soap they want.

I find coffee beans at Lidl havent gone up at all. Still paying the same /g as a few years ago.

Wonder why instant has increased in price so much

@newire's bars of soap turn to slime, so everyone else's bar of soap turns to slime as well. That is a fact, and your experience of it NOT turning to slime is a myth, a fantasy, a LIE! 😆

75 quid is no way a weekly shop. Might be for a couple, definitely not a family.

Agree I struggle to keep it under £60 and that’s just for me.

PiggyPigalle · 10/09/2025 17:04

Upsetbetty · 09/09/2025 19:42

coffee = not essential
hand wash - a bar of soap would suffice
toothpaste - fair enough
chips - I would buy potatoes and make my own

in terms of lunch bits why buy drinks just send them with water.

Instead of handwash, refill from a big bottle of bubble bath, it's all soap. 67p for 750ml Asda.
Snacks, I take it crisps and the like, are a 21st century luxury. Stick a couple of cheap biscuits in instead. Cartons of drink, bad for teeth, gut and weight. Refill a water bottle from the tap.
It's no luxury but better than eating on credit.

Only way I can afford the best of simple food at home is being frugal in other areas, such as never buying coffees or food out. I was going to have a treat of a new jacket and trousers, until I saw the prices.

NormaNormal · 10/09/2025 17:05

@newire , Dove isn't soap. I don't know what shower gel you use but it is usually not as cheap as bar soap. Soap here doesn't go mushy.

@PiggyPigalle , shower gel and bubble bath aren't soap, but they can be used as handwash.
