Does anyone here use Octopus Energy? Would you recommend?

Just off phone with Eon, our current supplier, who want to raise our DD substantially despite the fact that we are £150 in credit.

Am thinking of moving suppliers and wondering about Octopus - does anyone have them?

@RentRaft
Currently involved in an Energy Ombudsman dispute with them over insane double billing and random direct debit changes without any communication. We are now down to the tune of over a thousand pounds.

So all this happened overnight? Otherwise you’d have noticed the “insane double billing and random direct debit changes”

Nitgel · 22/08/2025 14:55

Seem okay but I signed on for a certain amount and it's just gone up by £40 extra a month

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 22/08/2025 14:56

Probably the best of the big energy companies and they’re particularly good for alternative time of use tariffs eg if you have an EV, solar panels, battery, heat pump, etc.
However, no one is perfect and when I left them for a supplier with a cheaper EV tariff, it took several months and intervention by the Ombudsman to get my credit back.

I'm on direct debit, but "pay the bill" not a set monthly amount.

Abuye · 22/08/2025 14:57

We’ve saved an absolute fortune by switching to their tracker tariff about 18 months ago.

They wanted to increase my direct debit a couple of weeks ago. I replied and said I didn’t want to, and they said okay we’ll keep it as it is.

All good.

Though the recent changes to how they dish out the free coffee vouchers has annoyed quite a few! 😆

NainAGP · 22/08/2025 14:58

Yes I'd recommend. They gave me the fuel money last winter when I lost it from the government. They offered, I didn't apply.

SprayWhiteDung · 22/08/2025 15:03

I'd recommend them as well. They seem a lot more 'honest' and clued-up than most of the others.

Obviously, this doesn't mean that they're perfect, and I'm sure they get plenty of complaints as well; but I agree with PP that, imho, they're by far the best of the 'bad' bunch that we have to choose from.

Yes, they're expensive, but all of the providers are, because global energy prices have rocketed across the board. Octopus frequently complain vociferously (and campaign) at how expensive they are, and thus how they have to charge their customers much more than they would like to - I doubt they would have the nerve to put their heads above the parapet to do this if they were actually busy shovelling on excessive profits on top for themselves.

PolkaDotPorridge · 22/08/2025 15:08

I’m very happy with them. It’s been about 6 months.

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2025 15:09

Never won on the free spins either. I fear this will be like my big lottery win, non existent.

Mikart · 22/08/2025 15:12

Love them. Won twice on the free spins !!

bakermummy21 · 22/08/2025 15:13

We were transferred to them after being with Shell energy too and they’ve been fine so far.

You win points which translate to money on your account!

luckylavender · 22/08/2025 15:20

I like them a lot

Beyondburnout · 22/08/2025 15:20

I couldn't work out how to get a refund. Didn't get anywhere with customer services. However there engineers managed to change our antiquated meters to smart meters and were delightful.

RentRaft · 22/08/2025 13:55

Absolutely not.

Currently involved in an Energy Ombudsman dispute with them over insane double billing and random direct debit changes without any communication. We are now down to the tune of over a thousand pounds.

Their customer service has been appalling.

There is a FB forum dedicated to people with similar experiences and a stack of ombudsman decisions against them.

If you advanced search on here others have also had multiple issues around billing.

Be very, very careful.

I'm nearly 50 and have never ever dealt with a situation like this in my whole adult, bill paying life.

Octopus is good
Fuse is better imo

Codyrhodesisaheel · 22/08/2025 13:17

They are excellent, their tech interface is good, billing regular and customer service superb. Would highly recommend them.

Ditto this. They’re excellent!

CarpeVitam · 22/08/2025 15:37

And one to avoid at all costs is EDF energy! 😡

Blarn · 22/08/2025 15:42

I've been with them a year. No problems but love how meter readings update my account within minutes, rather than the says it took with Eon.

Mikart · 22/08/2025 15:43

Returnofjude · 22/08/2025 15:13

£1 each time 🤣

Ladedahlia · 22/08/2025 15:43

They’ve been great for several years but put my payments up to a ridiculous amount a few months ago so I have switched.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/08/2025 15:46

Seemed all fine until they notified me that they hadn't charged me correctly about a year before, and so my bill was substantially higher than I thought. They were correct, they hadn't, and because I find their billing a bit erratic I hadn't checked like I should have. Irritating though.

isitmytime · 22/08/2025 15:49

octopus was my supplier when I moved in to my house. They wanted to charge me £150 for a single person working out of the house 12hrs a day as the previous occupant worked from home and had a much higher usage. They refused to budge even after 4months of accurate weekly readings. I moved supplier and paid the final bill they provided only for them to get in touch after 5.5 months saying they had miscalculated the final bill and I was due them just under £250 this was despite me over paying and being due a refund from them that I was still fighting for.
it dragged on for 3months and I had to threaten to go to the ombudsman for it to be resolved and to get my refund.
I pay £75 pm with British Gas which is a far more realistic charge and never had an issue with them

Cherrycola4 · 22/08/2025 15:55

Yes I definitely recommend Octopus. The app is easy to use and you get perks. We signed up using a friend’s link and got the £50 off.
