Quite. I know a few boarding school teachers and military personnel who are in job provided accommodation who have bought a property, often rented out. After all they are in accommodation that is dependent on their job and it's back up for when they retire/leave that job.

Indeed. I used to be Assistant Housemistress for senior girls’ boarding at an independent school. I had a flat to live in so I could do my job. It wasn’t mine. I didn’t even really like it.

My goodness, who’d have thought we’d have a deletion on these threads? I’ll return when normal service has resumed.

I had to scroll back to see who it was. You???? What can you possibly have said that’s controversial - especially considering all the racist shite that’s allowed to stand and we are meant to educate people about.

(obviously don’t re type it 😂)

countrygirl99 · 24/08/2025 18:12

Don't know what Blossom toes said but it was probably sensible.

Why did @BIossomtoes get deleted? Who could have reported her? 🤔

I think possibly that we are in danger of allowing the thread to become somewhat dominated. Maybe best to scroll on by.

Ethics and morality didn't seem so important for the 14 years up until last summer.

It seems to be because everyone knows the Tories are unethical and immoral but Labour say they aren’t. Or something.
I know my dad upset a Tory canvasser once by saying he wouldn’t vote for them and when they asked why he drew himself up to his full RAF 5’10” and said ‘Because I believe Conservative policy is immoral and unchristian. Good day’. The canvasser couldn’t get back down the drive quickly enough.

OK, I've just seen a post that said all Turks and Albanians should be rounded up and killed.

And, no, I'm not going to copy and paste it. 5.51 'immigrant hotels' thread.

cardibach · 24/08/2025 18:31

This country is getting scary.

I saw that. I think the poster is trying to say that is what we'd get if Farage is voted in?

DuncinToffee · 24/08/2025 18:34

Not the whole country, a small number being hyped up by the media and MN

Just watched a football match, the only flags waved were blue and white

Yes, in hindsight, you're correct. Irony is hard to spot in a sea of racism.

It was my first reaction too!

countrygirl99 · 24/08/2025 18:44

Sadly a flag has appeared in our village but at least it's a union flag the right way up. The flag hoister leaves their stonking great RV parked on the road on a slight bend creating a hazard because traffic in neither direction can see what's coming. Knobs.

rockstarshoes · 24/08/2025 20:18

I reported that thread at the very first post & then hid it! You could see the way it was going to go from the off!

I’m going to hide all of them from now on because it’s starting to affect my mood!

It’s so sad & depressing! And I’m going to mske a concerted effort to spend less time on here & more time out in the real world where at least in my small multicultural market town there are no bloody flags, no protests & where anyone trying to spin hate on the local Facebook pages are sent packing very quickly!

I am so disappointed in MNHQ!

Asylum hotel operators have been told to house convicted foreign criminals including arsonists, The Telegraph can disclose.

Home Office documents provided to firms contracted to arrange accommodationstate that providers must “acknowledge and agree” that some residents may be “ex-foreign national offender[s] released on criminal bail”.

The “statement of requirements” for providers, obtained by The Telegraph, also warns firms that housing convicted arsonists may lead to higher insurance premiums, and says “more robust furniture” is likely to be needed for ex-offenders.

The same official papers also state that staff who have face-to-face contact with migrants in hotels must undergo annual training in a number of areas including “unconscious bias”, “ethnic diversity and cultural awareness

Context - sobering reading.

The German welfare state is no longer financially sustainable, Friedrich Merz said on Saturday.

The chancellor argued for a fundamental reassessment of the benefits system as spending continues to soar past last year’s record of €47bn (£40bn).
In a state-level party conference meeting on Saturday, Mr Merz said: “The welfare state as we have it today can no longer be financed with what we can economically afford.”

Once the export champion of Europe, Germany’s economy has slowed dramatically since 2017, with GDP growing by only 1.6 per cent since then versus 9.5 per cent for the rest of the eurozone.

Germany’s economy shrank by 0.2 per cent last year following a 0.3 per cent dip in 2023 – the first time since the early 2000s the economy has retreated two years in a row.

Industrial production fell under the Left-leaning “traffic light” coalition of Olaf Scholz and continues to slide under the new government, with GDP declining by 0.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, spending on social welfare has exploded, and is set to increase further this year as Germany’s population ages and unemployment rises. Although the majority of benefit recipients are German, large numbers are non-German citizens.

The grim warning from the German chancellor will fuel concerns about the parlous state of Britain’s finances. Despite Mr Merz’s concerns, Germany’s financial problems pale in comparison to the UK.

At 62.5 per cent, Germany’s debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) is one of the lowest in the eurozone and far below the UK’s at 96.3 per cent.

Higher welfare spending, especially on disability benefits in Britain, has helped make the UK’s debt-to-GDP the fifth highest in the developed world.
In the UK, welfare spending costs about 10.8 per cent of GDP, with welfare payments at £326bn this year rising to £373bn over the next five years. Pensions are the biggest factor – predicted to rise from £159bn this year to £182bn by 2030.

State pensions in the UK are far lower than in Germany and account for about 5.1 per cent of GDP. In Germany, by contrast, state pensions alone account for about 12 per cent of GDP, according to Eurostat. Benefits for families and children added a further 3.4 per cent.

However, the UK has a higher disability benefit bill, which cost £36bn in 2023-24 but which is set to hit £56bn in 2029-30. That’s a 56 per cent increase over six years or about 8 per cent a year – far in excess of inflation.
