Cupboard Weirdos

I took delivery of fancy tomatoes yesterday. Really nice ones and a lot of them. The website I got them from has some very interesting recipes that I'm going to try out.

Anyway, it's got me thinking. I've had to buy some odd ingredients to make said recipes and I'm now the proud owner of about 10kg of fancy tomatoes and a bottle of pomegranate molasses. Pomegranate molasses! I know what a pomegranate is, but a bottle of pomegrante molasses?

I can see that my £4.50 bottle will probably be used for one tablespoon and live in my cupboard until I rediscover it when it's 15yrs out of date.

What weird things have you got in your kitchen cupboards? Or your fridge? I know I've got a jar of marmalade that I made about 5yrs ago lurking with an elderly cucumber in my fridge.

Frozen onions are a god send for an emergency when I either run out of onions or can't be arsed to chop. If you want to use them up in one go, then French onion soup? I mainly use Delia's recipe but with a few shortcuts- bovril to make the beef stock and Lidl's dried garlic baguette bruchetta type things for the floaty bread. Mainly as I'm a very lazy cook. Dump frozen onions in pan with oil and butter. Leave to soften while you laze around. Once suitably softened follow the rest of the recipe. Threaten any of the family that try to take seconds as it that is the cook's privilege.

Or dump them in the slow cooker when you are doing a stew or a curry. Even the onion hater in the house has been known to ask for extra when I've done that.

Thanks for courgette recipes.
These are the courgettes. I think I could actually slice one and bbq it like a burger!

That is a very disturbing photograph. Please stop stroking the courgettes, they might enjoy it, but some of us find it triggering.

🙂

Are frozen onions supposed to be for emergencies?Ooops. I thought they were kitchen staples, like frozen garlic, frozen ginger, frozen butternut squash, frozen sweet potato, frozen mash…… that’s the bottom drawer of my freezer put in its place then!

I bought Tahini paste ~10 years ago thinking I minght make my own hummus.

I never made my own hummus.

But she’s still sitting there, the Tahini jar. Unopened, claiming valuable lazy susan real estate, reminding me every time I open the fridge that I never DID get round to making that hummus…

Has anyone ever watched Michael Mcintyre talking about herbs and spices?
