Cupboard Weirdos

I took delivery of fancy tomatoes yesterday. Really nice ones and a lot of them. The website I got them from has some very interesting recipes that I'm going to try out.

Anyway, it's got me thinking. I've had to buy some odd ingredients to make said recipes and I'm now the proud owner of about 10kg of fancy tomatoes and a bottle of pomegranate molasses. Pomegranate molasses! I know what a pomegranate is, but a bottle of pomegrante molasses?

I can see that my £4.50 bottle will probably be used for one tablespoon and live in my cupboard until I rediscover it when it's 15yrs out of date.

What weird things have you got in your kitchen cupboards? Or your fridge? I know I've got a jar of marmalade that I made about 5yrs ago lurking with an elderly cucumber in my fridge.

No idea what sumac is either. It didn't show up when I did a search on Sainsburys website.
Maybe it's like orris powder and pickled walnuts??

Sumac is delicious, I chuck some on to all sorts of things.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:43

@Peaceisenough I don't have any lettuce or olive oil either! It's going to be half a recipe, thanks sainsburys for not delivering those!
But pomegranate molasses...yep....

Anyway, deckchairs are set up and I have ice cream to go with our crazy ingredients! We've surely got to be able to make something tasty, even if we just eat tomato sandwiches. With the molasses, fizz, walnuts, orris and everything else! 😆🤣😂

I have just been given a courgette that could double as a baseball bat but my father, so any uses for courgette would be appreciated (beyond are normal use in sauces etc)

Courgettes are a staple in our house. I usually just chop into rounds and throw in a casserole dish with a chopped red or yellow pepper, wedges of red onion and tomatoes. Leave cherry toms whole or quarter bigger varieties and bonus points for fancy coloured tomatoes (I get way too excited about tomatoes) add some whole garlic cloves, a good glug of olive oil and half a teaspoon of thyme and oregano each and some salt. Pop in the oven until it's all going soft and serve with almost any meat or fish you like. Healthy , easy and tasty.

I imagine it tastes like it smells. Of loft.

Most unusual ingredients (especially pomegranate molasses) can find a home in one of the lovely Ottolenghi’s lovely recipes. Which look terrifying but are perfectly straightforward once you hold your breath and jump. I read his books like fiction for years, but now I cook from them all the time.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:50

@Peaceisenough I knew you'd posted on my other daft threads! You'll definitely want to sit outside on the deckchair! No one wants to chew on tents, snoring dogs or lofts...bleurgh...

@CurlewKate off to Google again. Never ever heard of that person? A person or a cookery style???

@MrsGuyOfGisbo I give you 12 months with your new kitchen and you'll be back here, on a deckchair, swapping random ingredients!

YABU about pomegranate molasses - it's fabulous. I make granola and stir a bit in to help toast the nuts. Put it on salad ( in dressing if you can be bothered to make it) instead of balsamic. Swirl it on ice cream.
One thing - do shake the bottle really well each time or you'll get a solid lump at the bottom.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:53

@Peaceisenough You're very welcome! 😆🤣😂🤣

Lofty cocktails aside, I’m up for sitting in a deckchair with a pomegranate molasses infused glass of fizz. I can contribute some greengage jam. And a half jar of granny’s chutney. I have no idea whose granny 🤷‍♀️

Peaceisenough · 15/08/2025 09:55

I really want pomegranate molasses now.

Am I the only one who sniggered childishly about you toasting your nuts? No? Just me then.

DinoLil · 15/08/2025 09:56

@Rosesandteashops thanks for the shaking tip. I shall do that. My thighs are so enormous that I'll put the bottle in my knickers, give my hips a wobble and the bottle will be shaking for hours!
Ice cream? It's no good. I'm going to have to open the bottle and try a bit.
I'll be back...

I had a pickled walnut in a cocktail once. It tasted of loft.

I think this might be my favourite MN quote in quite some time 😂

I've just bought pomegranate molasses at a whopping £6.50 for just one recipe that I will obviously instantly lose. You are all giving me hope/ideas for what else I can do with it before throwing 97% of the bottle away in 2034
