just checking out places to eat as I'm staying nearby late August for one night. I expect the Cotswolds to be on the pricey side but the wording on this menu and the prices I find are all a bit much..

Or am I really that out of touch?

I live 50 miles north and am travelling through, so I do know what the area is like.

I shall not be eating there and will grab something in Lechlade I expect.

Water is a mere -1.5, now that's a bargain!

I'll have the crab to start and the duck with peach and red wine for main please.
Would quite like some hispi cabbage and green beans on the side if anyone would like to share?

Oh that is what I am having minus the green beans !

Is it really normal to eat that much steak? Or is that for 2/3 people?

No idea. Rather more by accident than design I have been watching a few youtube videos about Fallow in London. A kind of trendy gastropub for the 2020's. They have the sheer audacity to serve up poor Mrs Dairy Cow as a luxury item in various ways.

They will also sting you quite blatantly for an enormous smoked cod's head more than a foot long and wide, sizzly hot on a big platter covered in scriacha sauce. I don't know whether the eyeballs were still in the head (they probably were) but really!

Who is the clientèle? Who wants this? Who wants to pick out bits of cod cheek meat and disect a fish brain?

Has a touch of the emporer's new clothes about it.

Megapint · 13/08/2025 18:58

I would call it Poncey but then I'm probably a bit common Grin

Chewbecca · 13/08/2025 18:59

Haha, I have looked at Fallow too and sent it to friends saying 'let's go here please'!!

Sweetpea333 · 13/08/2025 19:03

It looks great!

Some of it seems good but you must be braver than me if you order the cod's head.

CurlewKate · 13/08/2025 19:06

On the more expensive side, but nothing out of the ordinary either for price or ponciness!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/08/2025 19:06

I live on the south coast in a tourist area and those prices seem very high to me! About £20 seems to be an average for a main course (still too high IMHO) and £8 ish for a starter.

We sometimes have triple cooked chips by mistake when I find them in the back of the air fryer drawer

😂

English spareguts of course, but they don't specify the origin.
JRs are protected, & not available now.

I love this autocorrect for asparagus - I shall call it spareguts for evermore 😁

Not autocorrect, just a family name that I typed without thinking !😀
Like beefburglars, cubumber, spaghetti bollock naked....

Looks like a lovely summer menu for a moderately smart Gastro-pub… I really don’t quite understand what the issue is?

if you want fast food or a carvery then there are plenty of places that offer those too!

faeriesandelves · 13/08/2025 19:15

OP I think this is the Double Red Duke menu as I recognise it and the font. If so I can thoroughly recommend it. We had a birthday dinner there last year in a small function room . Beautiful gastro pub inside and out and excellent food. Yes Cotswolds is an expensive area but we chose to go to that area so expected higher prices. Didn’t have the expensive steaks though, we had a set menu maybe as a large group.
See my photo attached. Prob gone up in price since then.

Monica’s plaice

Park in the riverside car park. Walk up through the park and over the bridge towards the town. You’ll pass a pub on the left. Little way up there is a T junction, bear left. You’ll see the chip shop over the road. They have a few seats if it’s raining.

Monica’s seems to have changed hands recently.

we’ve found it to be okay but not a patch on what it was before.

OP is annoyed about the lack of nuggets.

Sounds a bit sneery.

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 13/08/2025 20:10

Sounds lovely and completely out of my budget

FlayOtters · 13/08/2025 20:41

oh man you're missing out because the Double Red Duke is DELCIOUS (if you're into meat) and a gorgeous location.

PangolinPan · 13/08/2025 17:47

Id say that's the opposite of pretentious, very straightforward and simple. I was expecting one of those essay length descriptions for each dish.

I’d say those minimalist ingredients lists are much more pretentious than elaborate descriptions.

“Jersey royals, mint” is more pretentious than “new season jersey royal potatoes dressed in English butter and fresh mint”

MikeRafone · 13/08/2025 21:02

im Not adverse to an 8oz rump steak, but I’m not heavily into meat.

i would really rather have a simple pasta meal that evening
