I'm thinking this is pretentious

just checking out places to eat as I'm staying nearby late August for one night. I expect the Cotswolds to be on the pricey side but the wording on this menu and the prices I find are all a bit much..

Or am I really that out of touch?

I live 50 miles north and am travelling through, so I do know what the area is like.

I shall not be eating there and will grab something in Lechlade I expect.

Is it really normal to eat that much steak? Or is that for 2/3 people?

I don’t know about pretentious but it looks a little boring and visually, the menu looks like it was belongs in a greasy spoon.

Fish and chips by the river sounds perfect to me though!

TheChosenTwo · 13/08/2025 18:16

The kg steaks dh and ds will share and if it’s a bigger one I’ll share too. They usually advise you how much of it is expected to be bone and how many people it would reasonably serve with potatoes and other sides.
Menu looks good to me and prices in line with what I would expect to pay.
I’d sooner eat somewhere like this than somewhere cheaper with crap quality food (not that cheaper places necessarily means poor quality of course, we’ve had some exceptional meals for less but some of our favourites are all around this price point). Happy to pay for good food but beyond furious to pay for shit offerings.

ginasevern · 13/08/2025 18:18

I live in Bristol and eat out fairly regularly in good independent restaurants. The wording, descriptions and prices are pretty standard to be honest. Menus have been laid out in this way (minimalistic descriptions and no pound signs) for at least 15 years in this neck of the woods.

We sometimes have triple cooked chips by mistake when I find them in the back of the air fryer drawer

🤣🤣🤣

GiveItAGoMalcom · 13/08/2025 17:47

Surely you mean '25'?

It always amuses me when they remove the £ sign, like that's going to make it look cheaper 🤦‍♀️

Presumably you could claim ignorance and false advertising as you leave them 25p out of your purse at the end of the meal.

Lifelover16 · 13/08/2025 18:22

I know this place. Nice but expensive for pub food.

Overthebow · 13/08/2025 18:25

Looks nice, I’d eat there.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 13/08/2025 18:27

Does their printer charge by the letter? Were pound signs too expensive?

I agree OP. Pretentious twattery. I can only ponder how superior the staff might be.

It is just food ffs. Not the cure for cancer.

I do love fish & chips 🙃

Even when it’s burnt?

Nevermind that, asparagus in August? Just no. The season ends at the end of June.

Other than that, and the single option for non-meat-eaters, it looks pretty standard for a gastropub.

English spareguts of course, but they don't specify the origin.
JRs are protected, & not available now.

😁 And look like they’ve been woodfired (or completely incinerated in my case).

I think the menu sounds quite normal for a ‘nice’ place (and delicious). I wouldn’t say the wording was pretentious, no foam clouds of crushed petit pois aka mushy peas.

I really fancy trying the beef dripping toast.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/08/2025 18:35

Sounds bloody delicious.

MalcolmMoo · 13/08/2025 18:44

To me this is a normal menu. On the pricier side though but it sounds like a more up market place.

Similar menus we have around here, we are on the edge of the Cotswold though so maybe I think it’s normal.

SociableAtWork · 13/08/2025 18:48

Even Pret a Minge has a salad box containing ‘massaged kale’.

Food descriptions are soooo pretentious!

MissyB1 · 13/08/2025 18:48

I live in the Cotswolds and I hate to break it to you but that’s not bad value for eating out here - although yes I accept it’s a pub, but they are never “just a pub” in the Cotswold villages anymore sadly.

Pret a minge 😂

A good bit of char on a lemon? Yes please.

MoveOverToTheSea · 13/08/2025 18:51

It’s trying to be posh sounding but utterly failing 😂😂
im not even sure it would qualify as pretentious.

The prices 😭😭
(but yay I’m living in the back of nowhere, in an area that isn’t that rich either so might have that completely wrong)

Chewbecca · 13/08/2025 18:52

And with the beef, the price is per kilo. I imagine you can have a 200g steak, or a 300g if you prefer, it's giving a nice amount of flexibility.

Velmy · 13/08/2025 18:54

silverspringer · 13/08/2025 17:30

I don’t get what’s pretentious either. Yes a bit pricey but it looks lovely. What was wrong with the wording?

OP is annoyed about the lack of nuggets.

Dabberlocks · 13/08/2025 18:54

That menu is well up there on the ponce-ometer.

Chewbecca · 13/08/2025 18:54

I'll have the crab to start and the duck with peach and red wine for main please.
Would quite like some hispi cabbage and green beans on the side if anyone would like to share?
