To let DS wear his new trainers without socks....

Just wanting to know if i'm being reasonable for being annoyed about this.

DS12 has decided today (and for the past few weeks) since the weathers been a lot warmer that he's not gonna be wearing socks anymore (for the summer) - He's been mucking about in some old astro turf style footy boots for the past few weeks which I didn't mind (they do now reek though). However, as it's a lot nicer weather today and he's going out with some mates, he's decided to wear his new Nike Dunks without any, despite him having loads of trainer socks.

Would you be annoyed about this? Socks were always enforced by my parents when I were growing up (had a very strict family and upbringing). I'm annoyed cause it'll wear out his shoes faster (and cause them to reek) and that he's got trainer socks available (which according to him are too warm!)

Nooooooo!!!!! My ds would not be allowed out the house!!! Especially not in new, expensive trainers!!

Hatty65 · 11/08/2025 16:17

I'd let him - but warn him he's likely to get blisters wearing new trainers and no socks.

Gcsunnyside23 · 11/08/2025 16:21

Ugh god no they will absolutely stink in no time. Id get him the invisible ones from Primark. I've the opposite issue, my kids only wear Nike tube socks so they have horrible tan lines up their ankles lol

I've told him they're gonna reek and he's seen the consequences of it first hand when he's been wearing his footy boots without socks when he's mucking about, however he doesn't seem to care

Apparently it's the trend / craze atm and he says a couple of his friends are doing the same? Surely not though - anyone else on here heard of it?

@Gcsunnyside23 are they wearing the nike tube socks in summer too, even when it's a lot warmer?

No is a complete sentence.

I bet all the other boys claim everyone else does it and this is some sort of craze. That is reason enough to say no and instil in him to be an individual and not some kind of sheep.

Snorlaxo · 11/08/2025 16:54

I see teen boys in slides or crocs on hot days.

ILoveWhales · 11/08/2025 16:57

God no they'll stink. Get him to wear thin sports socks.

itsgettingweird · 11/08/2025 17:01

They wear ankle sports socks with crocs and sliders. 😂

I very doubt people are sockless in trainers! And yes it stinks and also really increases your chance of athletes foot.

Proper cotton trainer socks are the way to go. They’d be non negotiable here too all the time I’m expected to pay for said footwear

eurochick · 11/08/2025 17:10

I couldn’t get worked up about this. Warn him of the consequences (blisters, stinky shoes) and let him get on with it.

Exactly, this is one of those ‘learning through doing’ opportunities I would have thought.

NerrSnerr · 11/08/2025 17:14

If they stink leave them in the garden overnight to air them out.

chowmeinz · 11/08/2025 17:20

Does it wear shoes out faster?

I would be unbothered by this but I have an autistic teen who hasn’t worn socks since he was about 2/3

Yep socks in proper warm days even on holiday abroad. Sometimes the shorter ones but that only for crocs. My eldest girl wears the shorter ones with her trainers but the younger boy has the full length nearly all the time🫠 feet must be really sweaty. I don't get it lol

ThatCyanSheep · 11/08/2025 17:50

It won’t wear his shoes out faster.

if he doesn’t want to wear socks, that’s on him. His feet might stink, but that’ll be his cross to bear.

It will also be everyone else’s cross to bear when they have to share space with him though and they can smell it.

This would piss me off massively, and I would be making it clear no designer trainers if he isn’t going to take care of them.

I've had some pretty honking shoes (and I wear socks!).

My dad's golf shoes used to smell like a sewer.

I've never once smelt them when wearing them, and when they're off it airs out within minutes, if that

Ezzee · 11/08/2025 19:30

I never have and never will wear socks. I only wear something on my feet if I leave the house TBH.
Hate them as they make me feel claustrophobic.
My trainers/boots etc never smell, my feet don't smell, they are clean, I don't get blisters and my feet are lovely apparently.

Kath89 · 11/08/2025 19:41

Warn him and pick you're battles life is too short imo

AmyDuPlantier · 11/08/2025 19:43

I never wear socks with trainers!

Absolutely fascinating that people have strong views on this though 🤣

BuildbyNumbere · 11/08/2025 19:56

No, horrid .., I wouldn’t allow it. Either wear socks or don’t wear them. Must feel very uncomfortable 😬

verityveritas · 11/08/2025 19:57

I don’t wear socks, I do have several pairs of washable insoles which I change every few days (daily if it’s hot / feet sweaty) they don’t pong. The only time they got niffy was on holiday and I forgot spare insoles. My kids don’t wear socks either (during holidays / weekends) I just give their trainers a quick squirt of ‘odour eater’ and no stink.

Sunaquarius · 11/08/2025 20:10

I'd say, you need to wear socks for hygiene. If he doesn't want to then fine but tell him when those trainers start to stink they will be thrown out (and not replaced).

Scoooobydooo · 11/08/2025 20:21

I can’t believe anyone cares about whether your kid wears socks or not. Why’s it such a big deal? He might get blisters, but that’s on him. How can no socks cause trainers to wear out quicker I don’t get it.

BashfulClam · 11/08/2025 20:27

Trainers stink so much without socks. I wear socks and my feet don’t smell at all. I once wore trainers for a few days without socks and my feet and shoes were stinking. My friend can’t bear socks and her mother used to make her wash and deodorise her feet as soon as she came in the house due to the stench.

There is a product called actifresh from Amazon, get some for his feet and shoes.

ManteesRock · 11/08/2025 20:31

I don't blame him to be honest! Unless I'm driving I don't wear socks in the summer.
