There is probably more support for Scottish independence in England than in Scotland, though probably not for the same reasons.

I’d quite happily have Scottish independence if it meant Nicola Sturgeon had to remain within Scottish borders and she didn’t attempt to rehabilitate herself in the south of England

Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the Today programme, Kandiah quoted from the Mail on Sunday. “[Jenrick] said: ‘I certainly don’t want my children to share a neighbourhood with men from backward countries who broke into Britain illegally, and about whom we know next to nothing.’ These words echo a fear many have absorbed. Fear of the stranger. The technical name for this is xenophobia.”

Nothing to apologise for, IMHO.

DuncinToffee · 13/08/2025 20:41

Remember who runs the BBC

This is what he said

"I certainly don't want my daughters to live in a neighbourhood with men from a backward country"

It is xenophobia"

What Jenrick did was blatent xenophobia. The BBC should not have apologised . I am going to complain.

And I think it must be the heat but I am feeling sorry for Kemi Badenoch as she is not meeting Vance. (I wouldnt want to meet the fascist prick) The fact that she is seen as an irrelevance and that Jenrick and Farage are seen as the future is extremely depressing. I think Badenoch is a terrible politician (and I disagree with her on all things). but she is the leader of the Tories.

PickAChew · 14/08/2025 07:24

Is this what the BBC takes for being "balanced"?

So now you can't call them thick, racist or xenophobic?

Piggywaspushed · 14/08/2025 07:28

And the idea that because it was a religious slot there should be no criticisms of politicians or leaders. Someone needs to tell Jesus.

placemats · 14/08/2025 07:39

It was a xenophobic article by Jenrick. Will the BBC be censoring Pope Leo, who represents the 6 million Catholics the UK, now?

It’s an odd one. I don’t believe she wouldn’t have cleared her diary. The Tory meeting with Vance was apparently organised by Osborne and included Paul Marshall which is rather telling.

Notable that Jenrick met with Peter Thiel recently.

LlttledrummergirI · 14/08/2025 08:24

Of course Vance sees Badenoch as irrelevant and disregarded as a leader.

He's a misogynistic prick and she's a woman.

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2025 08:26

It's a blatant attack on her leadership position by Jenrick and co

Wirh terrible optics to boot, white men excluding a black woman.

Well that excuse is bollocks
I've heard lots if criticism of politicians /policies before on thought for the day.

As this was reported in the Daily Express I am sceptical about this incident

Philps is engaging in disaster tourism it seems

Bit like Jenrick and his faredodging exercise.

Even if it is all true the headline is very misleading. He didn't have a "knife pulled on him". That makes it sound as though he was directly threatened with a knife. He wasn't.

It's not "terrible optics"

It's the truth.

It doesn't "look" like white men excluding a black woman. It is white men excluding a black woman. (Who remembers the diversity conference line up in "Veep" ?)

Maybe Badenoch should have made more of her origins, rather than dismissing them ?

One minute it’s a knife, the next it’s a machete - is it so hard to tell the difference?

...

although he['s clearly been advised by some Bright Young Things that using the word in it's Anglo-Saxon vernacular will probably trip some filters somewhere to nudge the "story" up in the "Todays so called news" lists, and thus depress anything like good news from elsewhere.

Boris and his sudden hobby of model buses springs to mind.

Notonthestairs · 14/08/2025 09:51

Well if it’s documented by a journalist from the Express I’m sure it doesn’t have an angle…

Philp is a busy boy. Out on a boat with his binoculars one minute, the next trawling camps for click bait stories.
