Early Saturday morning walk

pinenuts75 · 30/07/2025 14:44

Does anyone walk to work early by themselves at 5.30am on a Saturday morning? Just wondering how safe it would be, especially as dark mornings are coming, it’s kind of ok in the week as people are going to work.

My partner does when he’s on a fitness kick and a couple of friends do before an early shift but it’s been light at that time for months.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 30/07/2025 14:49

I used to walk to work at that time five days a week - it was fine.

pinenuts75 · 30/07/2025 14:49

Just worrying about the dark mornings coming

It's July, it's AGES before dark mornings!

where do you live?

why not just try it & see how you feel?

Yes it’s busy in the week, just not so sure about Saturdays

The sun is only just rising when I leave at the moment

Try it and see? I would love to walk to work but too far and busy . I’d worry about being sweaty too but some colleagues bring a fresh top to change into

lechatnoir · 30/07/2025 14:55

I like an early walk often when the sun is rising but it would surely depend where you live. I feel very safe in my local area, it’s low crime, pretty rural everyone knows everyone. Appreciate nowhere is 100% safe but I’m happy with the risk vs benefit but would t do it in other parts of the country I’ve lived in/visited.

Not at 5:30 on a weekend morning!

I do usually get in a 6km circuit including some nice hills first thing on a Saturday. It makes me feel like I have earned my bacon sandwich. But for me first thing is 8am not, 5:30.

I did it on a Sunday, never had any issues.

needtostopnamechanging · 30/07/2025 15:01

It depends more where you are walking than the fact that it’s dark or not.

rough sink estate - probably bad
rough ground with lots of trip hazards - probably bad

standard suburban street - why ever not?

also often a good idea to vary time and route / or make friends with the various dog walkers

I don’t have a choice unfortunately, I start work at 6

We do get crime like anywhere, I guess I’m just nervous as I’ve never been out walking at that time of the morning.

Could you cycle? I'm always happier on a bike than on foot when somewhere dodgy as it means people can't try and engage you in conversation and and can't outrun you.

Well they say that you never forget how to ride a bike!

Has where you live got one of those bike hire schemes like the "Boris Bikes" in London. You could hire one for an hour or so see if you get on with it

No I don’t believe we have

there will be less traffic at half five on a saturday, and dark mornings aren't coming yet for a while - first time you'll notice them is middle of september onwards.

lechatnoir · 30/07/2025 16:37

@pinenuts I went to an event recently where they had free cycling sessions for people that hadn't done since they were kids and apparently it's a nationwide thing (I'm in England btw so no good if you're not!) . Happy to see if I can find details in case there's one near you! I thought it was such a good idea and looked quite fun

Ooodelally · 30/07/2025 18:00

My partner does to get to work, he’s had a couple of weird experiences that would have shit me up but he’s actually been fine and nothing bad happened. It is a bit of a worry but needs must when the devil drives…

DurinsBane · 30/07/2025 18:10

You haven’t answered where you live. It makes a lot of difference

MomsGotInk · 30/07/2025 18:14

When I do the early shift at my job I walk to work at around 5.45am yea. I live very close by but I never see anyone tbf.

Imisssleep2 · 30/07/2025 18:17

It all depends on where you live, how the route is and the distance. I wouldn't be keen in my area as there are increasing reports of women and children being followed and intimidated by people being housed in hotels, we have two hotels worth in my town. I would also avoid if it went down quiet alleyways etc.

YelramBob · 30/07/2025 18:20

You posted about this a few weeks ago. How can anyone give you a sensible answer if you won't tell us where you live or what the route's like?

I’m ok in the week, but it’s a Saturday I’m thinking when less people will be around going to work.
