Why is the football on 2 channels simultaneously?

Bbc1 (Wales) and ITV (Wales) are both showing the English ladies team playing football.

Can’t they decide for just one channel to show it? If it was one of them and S4C with a Welsh commentary I could just about understand but both are in English.

Bbc 1 scotland and STV are the same , i understand it is an important game but both channels !

Lifestooshort71 · 27/07/2025 17:03

At least we've got another hundred channels to choose from.

True, but I’m a creature of habit and like my usual Sunday night tv while I do the ironing!

It always is for international finals. They split the games between them until the final but both want the ratings for the finals. FA Cup the same too.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/07/2025 17:07

Because TV rights are complicated.

No one ever asks this about the Mens games.

Ah, ok

DistractMe · 27/07/2025 17:11

Oh come on, I'm not a football fan by any stretch and am not watching the game, but this is a pretty big match.

Also I expect while BBC and ITV will have agreed to take turns showing the earlier matches, their contracts will both include rights to the final. I think it's always like that for the big men's finals, don't see why the women's should be different.

People have asked that since showing football on the telly began 😂
Everyone knows the famous "They think it's all over ...it is now" quote from '66.
People forget there was another commentator on the other channel who said something completely different (and un-memorable).

Lifestooshort71 · 27/07/2025 17:15

I shall be watching the 2nd half of the Karen Pirie I recorded last week ready for tonight's new episode (brilliant programme). Women's football? No thank you.

Mokel · 27/07/2025 17:15

It’s the same with the men’s finals. BBC always have 75% of the viewing audience with men’s. Unsure of the women’s

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/07/2025 17:16

@ForLovingAquaSheep thanks for explaining l. I’ve not noticed it before!

@DistractMe it’s really not a big match for most of us in Wales. If we were tuned to an English BBC stream I could understand it more, but not on BBC Wales!

That is because you never get to a final 🤣

Tiswa · 27/07/2025 17:19

It would be if it were Italy v Spain/Italy v Germany or even Sweden v Spain.
it isn’t on because it is England playing it is because to get the rights to show the group games you get the final as well.

Both channels had Argentina v France on as well in the last World Cup

Well, that is very true!

Doesn’t mean we want to want our neighbours though 🤣

For a while there is two footballs, a cricket and F1 on the four big channels!!

RachelsPeeves · 27/07/2025 17:26

Because live sport should surely take precedence over some pre recorded dross. Today has been amazing with Darts and Football. (And cricket and F1 for those who like it)

I can't imagine bbc having anything in their normal programming that is more important than a live event and ITV definitely wouldn't.

Coffeeishot · 27/07/2025 17:42

I am assuming the op enjoys whatever Sunday evening "dross" she watches @RachelsPeeves there is entertainment beyond sport.

Dontcallmescarface · 27/07/2025 17:47

I think both the BBC and ITV should each have a dedicated sport channel, that way those that like sport can watch as much as they want all day every day, whilst the rest of us can watch our usual stuff without having the times dicked about.

I agree the extra channels they have could be sports channels.

Great news! Countryfile is on BBC2 and I’ve still got 1/2 a basket of ironing left!
