I salivate at the thought of Yang's Dumplings in China. Fried and crispy on the bottom. Filled with either pork and onion OR prawns, with a little soup in them too. Topped with sesame seeds.

Also xiao long bao, steamed soup dumplings.

OMG. My mouth is watering at the thought and it is YEARS since I've had them.

Vietnamese Claypots and good Pho

Proper greek babaganosh so much smokier/tastier

Croatian cuttlefish risotto.

QueenKong101 · 15/07/2025 10:26

Proper Huy Fong Sriracha sauce. The stuff you get here in the UK isn't in the same league. My husband imported me 6 bottles last year as a birthday present - best gift ever!

Also, Tsim Chai Kee's prawn wonton noodle soup and Dragon State's char siu rice - both from Hong Kong.

I do wish I could get the proper Nederlands pinda saus.

I tried to make it once, but we don't seem to get the magic ingredient of Ketjap.
It did not taste like pinda saus, just more of a runny peanut butter.

You can get ketjap manis at loads of places now - M&S sell it for sure as that’s where our latest bottle is from , it’s great in a lasagne

Mango sticky rice with coconut sauce/condensed milk over the top from street sellers in Thailand.

Globules · 15/07/2025 10:34

A friend that I've lost touch with used to bring me back some amazing sweet/spicy/sour jerky from China. I've looked in all the specialist shops here in the UK and just can't find it.

Fish Amok

Decent green mango salad.

EmpressOfSoreen · 15/07/2025 10:34

Tropical fruit. Things like guyabana, rambutan, chontaduro, granadilla, mangosteen, tomato de arbol, lulo. I miss being able to buy them like you buy apples here.

I am not in the UK, but my hunt here for some will not come to an end.

There is a lovely Mexican restaurant I went to in Juneau, Alaska (I know, not exactly that close to Mexico). They do the most amazing cheese enchiladas. It’s been 12 years since I was there and I still dream about them. I’ve tried making some myself but it’s just nowhere near the same. I have no idea how they do them but they were like crack, they were so addictive.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 15/07/2025 11:38

Deep fried pickle slices in New Orleans. My god they are utterly divine. I dream of them. And I don't usually enjoy deep fried anything. They are heavenly.

German food mostly - proper wiener schnitzel, jagerschnitzel, spatzle, oh, and the cakes of course.

I agree
You can get food from most places but not German/Austrian. Bizarely there was an Austrian Restaurant around 45 minutes from us but when the man who owned it retired his son didn't want to take over and sold the building to be converted into flats.

@Laska2Meryls my local Greek deli has imported Lays oregano crisps. You can buy them online from UK Greek shops for not much more than a similar size bag of Walkers crisps. Or from eBay or Amazon for an insane mark up 😂

Aaargh ! Dangerous!! ... Thanks !

Poobs2022 · 15/07/2025 12:37

Proper Thai food. Never had anything as good over here since we went. Oh and Canadian cheddar. It used to be imported into the UK before Brexit. I was devastated when I could no longer get it. It was so tangy and strong.

Spätzle are really easy to make if you have a Spätzleshobel (cheap on Amazon).

Lidl had oregano crisps for Greek week a while back. I have a bag at home.

Roman potato and rosemary pizza. Romann artichokes.
Actually, anything from pasta to icecream is nothing like you get in the UK or anywhere else.

It is completely different.
I loved living in Rome. I can try to recreate it but it is a pathetic attempt.

Bacalhau (salt cod). I'm from Portugal and it's our national food. We say 'there's 365 ways to prepare bacalhau, one for each day of the year'!

It's just such a versatile staple, and keeps well. My fave is bacalhau baked with chickpeas, onions & potatoes.

I live in portugal and I REALLY struggle with Bacalhau. Many of my Portuguese friends can't eat it either. Definitely the marmite of Portugal!

Arlanymor · 15/07/2025 13:16

Patagonian toothfish - you can get it here but not fresh and it's so expensive. £28 for 200g the last time I looked.

There also use to be an amazing Ramen place on Oxford Street in London, but it got demolished to make space for the Elizabeth Line expansion. It was cheap, cheerful and totally flavoursome.

MermaidMummy06 · 15/07/2025 13:19

Proper Japanese Ramen. And all the crazy things from Japanese vending machines.

princesspadam · 15/07/2025 13:36

7/11 egg sando from Japan, I’ve tried to make it here and nothing comes close

a pizza pie from Lou Malnatti in Chicago

honey mustard sauce with McDonald’s in the US

Laska2Meryls · 15/07/2025 13:43

Proper Danish Remoulade in the tubes ..
Luckily my Danish SIL and BIL knows to bring it over on visits ..

AdaColeman · 15/07/2025 13:43

French supermarket fish counters.
Soupe de poisson.

Belgian cakes and fresh cream chocolates.

Deep fried courgette flowers stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies.

Apericubes!

NeedToKnow101 · 15/07/2025 14:12

Real Mexican food you get in Mexico; proper tortillas, salsa, street food including carnitas and tacitos, jicama (spelling?) in a bag coated in chilli powder, Mexican breakfasts and refried beans. All proper Mexican food basically; it’s so gorgeous and nothing I’ve had here comes close.

I've got a recipe for them, but not the spatzleshobel.
Sadly, I don't think my efforts would be as good as eating them in Germany 😂
