I have a chronic health conditions which causes a lot of pain and I'm also diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I manage these with prescribed medication the best I can but sometimes they barely take the edge of it.

I've never smoked weed in my life but I've often wondered if it might be good for the pain and to ease the bad mental health days. It's popular amongst my row of neighbours though. I've been on gas and air for pain relief twice now and it was amazing! So chilled and just out of it. Is the high similar to that?

If you smoke weed, what do you get from it? Why do you smoke it?

It made my mental health worse.

Redflagsabounded · 11/07/2025 02:58

Seriously, don't touch it if you have mental health problems. It can make these much worse. I'm not saying this from a moral point of view - I have enjoyed it myself and still know people who do. But I've seen it cause problems when combined with poor mental health.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/07/2025 02:59

Could you try CBD oil rather than smoking weed, which smells like shit and could go either way?

Somnambule · 11/07/2025 03:09

Echoing what pp have said - weed will very likely exacerbate and compound your mental health problems in really horrible ways. I've experienced this first hand in myself and other people.

dontcomeatme · 11/07/2025 03:55

You can buy CBD "weed" to smoke. My mam does for arthritis and she likes smoking 🤷🏻‍♀️ or CBD oil. You can even get the CBD vape liquid. Don't smoke cannabis.

ladygindiva · 11/07/2025 18:17

Echo pp; smoking weed exacerbates my anxiety ; infact gives me panic attacks. No idea why anyone enjoys it. And I'm not saying that in a judgemental way, I love a glass or two of wine and used to enjoy the odd illicit substance back in the day. But weed has never been enjoyable for me.

Madisnttheword · 11/07/2025 18:20

Do not smoke cannabis if you have mental health problems
Honestly it can even give people mental health issues who don't already have them. Best to steer clear. CBD oil with no THC might help with pain. Doesn't help me, but I know it has helped others

WhistlingStraits · 11/07/2025 18:21

We only do it socially, ie if we’re at or hosting a party. And we do it for the laughs.

TheDandyLion · 11/07/2025 18:22

Relief from chronic arthritis pain.

ItsStillWork · 11/07/2025 18:25

It fry’s your brain cells and kills them.

ive known people turn into waste of spaces because of weed smoking,

Largestlegocollectionever · 11/07/2025 18:27

I found this video fascinating and it resonates with me.

Used correctly and ONLY for ceremonial use it can be a wonderful teacher, but used recreationally - harmful and just brings to the surface how you really feel - hence people with anxiety feeling panicky etc.

Cannabis helps me sleep and gives a mild feeling of euphoria, vaping is better for your lungs than smoking. Edibles are another option.
I'm 60 and have used it daily for large sections of my my adult life.
I love the smell of it.💚

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 11/07/2025 18:32

There’s a line in the film How Do You Know about alcohol, which I think applies here:

Never drink to make yourself feel better, only drink to make yourself feel even better.

Smoking weed can be very relaxing, and makes watching films a really enjoyable experience, because you focus in a way your brain just can’t when sober, and notice all kinds of details and themes.

I once got high during an extremely stressful time though, and tripped balls, it was horrible.

Try CBD for pain.

pinkglitter12 · 11/07/2025 18:35

I hated it. Everyone I knew that smoked it became really chill and giggly or just zoned out. It made me REALLY paranoid. I'd see things moving and think people were watching everything that I did. It wasnt nice at all.

I work in mental health and honestly it is not worth it. You could be one of the lucky ones who is able to function whilst smoking, but even those people that say that they are fine and it helps them ect, mostly they have behaviours that are just bizarre. They often go down rabbit holes with unhealthy and erratic thoughts.
I have someone very close to me who now has schizophrenia, likely exacerbated by the weed. Psychosis is a living nightmare for anyone involved.

Summerbean · 11/07/2025 18:36

Please don't use it or alcohol for MH issues. You will also lose any non smoking friends as it stinks.

I really hope you smoke it inside your own house, not in your garden. It absolutely stinks, the smell is repulsive and seems to travel easily.

I had to suffer years of a cannabis smoking neighbour several houses away who lived with his extremely elderly grandmother, so although neighbours hated the stink we were loathe to report him to the police because of the effect it might have had on her.

After she died he moved away, all the neighbours were so happy because we no longer had to suffer the stench.

TeenLifeMum · 11/07/2025 18:42

My understanding is it gives instant relief for anxiety but it comes back worse and long term use worsens mh.

I mostly use edibles, sometimes I vape.
On the subject of smell; my neighbours cook meat and I'm a vegetarian, the stench of flesh cooking is repulsive.

Do you buy from under age boys trafficking drugs for older criminals? The type of boy who then gets sucked into knife crime?

Is that so very different from child sexual exploitation?

It taught me how to conjugate verbs

PlantBased11 · 11/07/2025 18:56

(On a serious note) I echo the above. It can work well for pain and I've seen it prescribed for certain mh conditions including ptsd but I would not recommend it with depression. It can make you introspective in a potentially harmful way as well as reduce your desire to do things generally. I would speak to your doctor about it too.

I get mine here:

There are other companies, I dont think any of them employ under age boys though.

We grow our own. You can legally buy seeds from the Netherlands, where they are legally grown, so you can stop harrumphing.

MsNevermore · 11/07/2025 19:02

I live in a place where marijuana is completely legal - both medicinal and recreational. We have legit pharmacies that sell every form you could possibly imagine.
I don’t smoke it, but I am partial to a low dose edible, mostly when I’m either struggling to fall asleep or having disturbed nights where I’m struggling to stay asleep.
Works like a charm for me. I’ve got some bog standard ones and also some fast-acting ones. The standard ones take about 2 hours to kick in, so I can eat one at around 9pm, and then I’ll slowly start to feel the effects. Head up to bed and I’m out like a light and wake up feeling super refreshed after a solid nights sleep. I’ll use the fast acting ones if I’ve gone to bed and either can’t fall asleep or I’m on my second wake up of the night - they work in about 15 minutes.

It is illegal to grow cannabis in Uk.
