If you smoke cannabis, what do you get from it?

I have a chronic health conditions which causes a lot of pain and I'm also diagnosed with depression and anxiety. I manage these with prescribed medication the best I can but sometimes they barely take the edge of it.

I've never smoked weed in my life but I've often wondered if it might be good for the pain and to ease the bad mental health days. It's popular amongst my row of neighbours though. I've been on gas and air for pain relief twice now and it was amazing! So chilled and just out of it. Is the high similar to that?

If you smoke weed, what do you get from it? Why do you smoke it?

You can buy CBD "weed" to smoke. My mam does for arthritis and she likes smoking 🤷🏻‍♀️ or CBD oil. You can even get the CBD vape liquid. Don't smoke cannabis.

Where does she get this from please? Would love to get some!

legal or illegal?

My son smokes weed. He was diagnosed bipolar as a late teen, had several suicide attempts and was on medication.
When he started then smoking weed I was really fearful. However he now has a full time job, his own flat and is off all medication.
So it seems to have been good for him.

I mostly use edibles, sometimes I vape.
On the subject of smell; my neighbours cook meat and I'm a vegetarian, the stench of flesh cooking is repulsive.

Where do you get edibles from please? I’d like to try for chronic pain

Helpmechooseausername · 11/07/2025 19:16

Can you vape actual weed, not just CBD? Asking for a friend...

Erlingen99 · 11/07/2025 19:06

It is illegal to grow cannabis in Uk.

It’s not illegal to buy the seeds though.

Mrsbloggz · 11/07/2025 19:23

Edibles: I make my own (from the dried plant)
Yes you can vape the dried plant form of cannabis, you can also vape concentrates. Lots of places sell vaping devices, eg:

There’s a line in the film How Do You Know about alcohol, which I think applies here:

Never drink to make yourself feel better, only drink to make yourself feel even better.

Smoking weed can be very relaxing, and makes watching films a really enjoyable experience, because you focus in a way your brain just can’t when sober, and notice all kinds of details and themes.

I once got high during an extremely stressful time though, and tripped balls, it was horrible.

Try CBD for pain.

I used to feel like that until the last time I smoked it.

That time it was like I couldn’t get my brain to stop. My brain was just running away with and leaving me behind and it was a terrifying feeling. Totally out of control and I hated it.

That was around 12 years ago and I haven’t touched it since.

I would definitely echo what others are saying about don’t touch it if you already struggle with your mental health.

Most of the clinics can prescribe some form of edible if you want to go the legal route.
Other than that sorry I cant recomend anywhere as I've only ever made my own edibles.

ANameForNow · 11/07/2025 19:37

It entirely turns off the bit of my brain that tells me to self harm. 1 joint allows my brain to argue back, 2 makes it win, 3 turns off all desire to hurt myself. This is good, because I've caused serious damage this way and also overdosed a few times.

Pretty similar for my trauma based intrusive thinking.

Good for my arthritis. 1 fixes that enough that I'm comfy walking, if a bit stiff.

Does fuck all if I'm anxious - if anything, it can make it worse. Doesn't make a difference either way really with low mood, for me.

I smoke a lot. I buy from an old dude who grows it himself, so have no guilt about that. I don't care about the legalities, it keeps me alive at certain times and happy at others. Prescription medication for mh has historically only made me suicidal (and given me piles of tablets to take...), so this is far better for me. It's nothing like gas and air; just sort of takes the edge off. Like a cross between being tipsy and that nice bit of waking, where you're still all relaxed.

Definitely also illegal and well known to exacerbate many mental health issues, so consider it very fully.

Kimwestonhelpless · 11/07/2025 19:38

Hashish IE Afghan black or red leb were a mellow smoke experience unlike skunk etc ..oh and smelt way nicer.

Britneyfan · 11/07/2025 19:41

@TheOtherAgentJohnson that’s really interesting as this is basically the “rules” I have set for myself around alcohol. I have bipolar 1 disorder (but mostly tend to depression rather than mania), and have had good and bad experiences with alcohol. Different alcohols affect me differently. So generally my rule is not to touch it if I’m feeling even slightly low in mood. If I’m having a good day and feeling calm, relaxed and happy(ish at least!) then I feel it’s ok to have a drink or two if I fancy it though I don’t drink a lot anyway. And I do not touch gin as for some reason it reliably ends up in my sobbing my heart out later on! If I am feeling ok and want a really good night with lots of energy then I drink tequila, those nights have ended up in dancing on the tables or bar 🤣 Vodak, rum and whisky are more neutral drinks for me!

I’ve only had cannabis once by accident on holiday as a student with friends when in Cambodia - we went to have pizza together in a restaurant called “Happy Pizza”, my friends were fully aware there was cannabis in the pizza but I didn’t realise at all. And they deliberately didn’t tell me cos they know I’ve always been anti-drugs in general. Seems obvious in hindsight I know but I was young and naive and those sort of names aren’t unusual in that area and don’t always mean drugs! Anyway I felt really giggly and silly and relaxed so it was a good experience in the end.

However I have seen so many people’s lives really destroyed by smoking cannabis, including it causing psychotic illness or worsening their depression or just sapping motivation to do anything else at all. So I wouldn’t!

I am slightly intrigued by people saying ayuhusca resolved their treatment resistant depression etc. Though have also heard some horror stories about its safety so I would never risk it. Also intrigued by some recent studies showing that psilocybin in small doses and even ketamine may help to treat depression. But again wouldn’t risk it myself until the studies are clear on what the potential benefits and risks are and what doses to use etc. As there are also horror stories of people using those drugs and it ruining their lives.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 11/07/2025 19:48

Mumsnet is generally very anti weed. You might get better answers on Reddit.
I have a medical issue that causes muscle pains, I also have a busy life that I can’t switch off from sometimes. Weed helps me relax. I don’t smoke ciggies, eat crap, drink alcohol or caffeine and I keep fit.
Some weed at the weekends is fine for me!
My grandpa used to smoke it when he was older for his aches and pains, he would go in his garage and have some. He always said he didn’t want to pop lots of pills with horrible side effects.

Illegal home grown.

I have ptsd and cannabis helps me sleep and takes the edge off for me. Aware it affects people differently so approach with caution.

Crushed23 · 11/07/2025 20:34

Mrsbloggz · 11/07/2025 18:29

Cannabis helps me sleep and gives a mild feeling of euphoria, vaping is better for your lungs than smoking. Edibles are another option.
I'm 60 and have used it daily for large sections of my my adult life.
I love the smell of it.💚

I tried edibles for the first time recently and took a gummy that was way too strong. The effect was I couldn’t stop laughing, including while trying to have sex with DP. It was beyond embarrassing.

It's better to start with a very small dose when it comes to edibles, the liver converts THC into a longer acting cannabinoid and the effect also depends on individual liver enzymes.
I prefer to make my own because I want I know exactly how much of the dried plant is in each ML of the 'potion' that I make.
I weigh it out very precisely. Partly because I want to keep my tolerance down and partly because too much edible can make you feel a bit weird the next day and I dont want to be stoned in the daytime.

You can get edibles online. I have a friend who uses them for arthritis. They didnt like the idea of smoking.
But as others have said take small dose and it can make mh problems worse.

hairyunicorn · 28/11/2025 14:16

@TreatTreati have mental health problems and smoke, it’s fine! I find it lifts my mood greatly. You also don’t have to smoke, you can take it in oil or gummy form. Although I don’t like edibles as I feel it hits different . More stronger.

nothing more relaxing than a smoke before bed, make sure you get an indica to give you a body high and send you to sleep.

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 28/11/2025 14:32

I think this is an incredibly complex issue. But getting it medically is a lot different. I never tried it until medical was available, because unless you get it straight from the source, it’s likely something like county lines are involved at some point. I take a medical oil sometimes (you absolutely do not have to smoke, @TreatTreat, just so you know - I can’t handle the smell, the smoke, anything). Medical companies will actually sit you down with a doctor and you tell them what your exact issues are (chronic pain for me, but I’m also prone to anxiety from previous trauma) and they recommend different “strains.” This can make an absolutely HUGE difference. These have been made by breeding certain plants to get certain results. I find it really interesting that someone mentioned different results when drinking different alcohols - it is exactly like that. There are two main “groups” of strains - Indica and Sativa, and the differences could be like the differences between gin and tequila for @Britneyfan . I recommend the sub-Reddit dedicated only to U.K. medical cannabis. Please PM if you need a link; they’re very responsive to questions.

localnotail · 28/11/2025 14:52

I also say that it makes mental health problems worse. It does make you feel relaxed and chilled in a nice way to start with but the after effects are really bad.

I had issued in my 30s and thought it would be better than alcohol but made my problems much worse. I sometimes miss the high but I would never touch it again.

We grow our own. You can legally buy seeds from the Netherlands, where they are legally grown, so you can stop harrumphing.

You can buy seeds from head shops and vendors in the UK, but it's still illegal to cultivate them.

From the linked site, In the UK, it is illegal to germinate cannabis seeds without a licence. All of our seeds are sold for collection purposes only. However, part of the joy of collecting a cannabis seed is understanding the cultivation process.

Yes, but us legally buying seeds and growing a couple of plants at home does not involve child sex trafficking. At least not the way we do it. Maybe I should ask Gardener's Question Time if county lines and knife crime are necessary for cannabis cultivation.
