School boys in skirts

another hot summer day and this again. Why can't adults, educators use some common sense and just allow kids weather appropriate clothing?

OP posts:

Hardly news. Some boys tried this at my school back in about 1995!

So why did the OP then write this:

........it looks like a big deal because it makes headlines literally every year. Makes teachers look like idiots. So what is any logical reason to not allow shorts?

It does look as though she meant "shorts".

No the point is boys aren’t allowed shorts. Skirts are allowed as they are part of the uniform, shorts are not.

so they are wearing skirts as a protest in hot weather. The aim being is to get the school to allow shorts so boys aren’t forced to wear trousers in the heat.

dd’s school 40 denier tights must be worn with skirts which negates the whole argument.

I think boys and girls in all secondaries should be allowed shorts in the summer term. Certainly the younger years would wear them (ds currently year 6 lives in shorts, as do all his friends). I remember watching the Aussie soaps as a kid and thinking how much more practical the uniforms looked.

That's kind of the point.
Every year boys do this and schools still don't change the uniform rules.

Slightly off topic but is "summer uniform" for girls a thing of the past. We (and everyone I knew) used to wear skirt, blouse, tie and a blazer or coat for winter. Then from Whitsun onwards we wore a cotton summer dress in the school colours with sandals and I think ankle socks or tights if we preferred. I haven't seen girls in school summer uniforms for ages.

Most schools have branded PE uniform - shorts and an aertex type polo shirt. I've never understood why in really hot weather schools don't allow pupils to wear their PE uniform in school.

For secondary schools it's very very rare these days.

I've only ever seen school Sumner dresses in primary school? (Where generally shorts are also allowed)
Secondary school uniform is mostly blazer, shirt, tie, with skirt or trousers.
DS wears shorts most of the year (ourside of school) and his secondary school has recently introduced shorts but he doesn't want to wear them because he thinks they don't look good with a blazer. I don't think I've seen anyone at all wear them, however on Friday they were allowed to wear PE kit to school.

DiscoBob · 24/06/2025 13:42

Boys or girls should be allowed to wear either skirts or shorts.

They should also drop blazers in the summer term. Stupid to be carting it around when it's 30 degrees in the classrooms.
