School boys in skirts

another hot summer day and this again. Why can't adults, educators use some common sense and just allow kids weather appropriate clothing?

OP posts:
OneFineDay13 · 20/06/2025 18:34

Why have you said school boys and not school girls?

UnimaginableWindBird · 20/06/2025 18:34

Because girls are generally allowed to wear skirts, I imagine.

misssunshine4040 · 20/06/2025 18:35

What are you on about? Why can’t both genders wear shorts

I was driving yesterday at the same time as a number of schools were finishing for the day. Apart from three, every girl I saw was wearing thick black tights. I don’t imagine that’s part of the expectation when the weather is warm. I assume they’re choosing to. Some boys wore blazers, one wore a coat, but the majority had dispensed with blazers and ties.

witwatwoo · 20/06/2025 18:37

You want the boys to wear skirts or do you mean shorts ?

Ponderingwindow · 20/06/2025 18:41

What is wrong with boys wearing skirts?

TeddyBeans · 20/06/2025 18:41

Had one of these on my local FB page. The school are now looking at adjusting the uniform policy to allow for shorts. I find the whole high school attitude to uniform in my area ridiculous. Majority of offices won't make their staff wear full suits in midsummer and yet the schools here demand their students do... Blows my mind

looselegs · 20/06/2025 18:41

School local to me gave made headlines with this.
It's because girls can wear trousers or skirts but boys can only wear long trousers and not shorts. So they wore skirts to make a point.

greensidepatch · 20/06/2025 18:43

Do they want to wear skirts?

wafflesmgee · 20/06/2025 18:46

I just don’t think it’s that big a deal, honestly.

Soubriquet · 20/06/2025 18:48

I’m guessing OP is talking about how some boys are going to school in a skirt because they are not allowed to wear shorts and have to wear trousers

Good on them

Annascaul · 20/06/2025 18:49

Your average boy wouldn’t be seen dead in a skirt…

amooseymoomum · 20/06/2025 18:53

years ago we had skirt blouse jumper and blazer in winter, then in summer from Easter we had cotton dresses and sandals. some girls made their dresses in sewing class. much more sensible boys could wear trousers or shorts anytime but in summer still shirt and tie

it looks like a big deal because it makes headlines literally every year. Makes teachers look like idiots. So what is any logical reason to not allow shorts?

You'd better ask MNHQ to change your thread title.
It says skirts not shorts.

It’s meant to say skirts!! Am i the only one that understood immediately what OP was on about??

CrackOnThen · 20/06/2025 19:04

We had a right old hoo haa at our secondary.

Boys wore skirts. The school brings in shorts.

Boys stopped wearing skirts. Nobody wore shorts. Not one short wearer was ever spotted. That was about four years ago now.

No, I understood. A colleague said he envied me in my dress. I pointed out it's only social convention stopping him from wearing one.

About half the office has been in shorts this week anyway. (Tech - in some cases, it's what thry always wear.)

Fearfulsaints · 20/06/2025 19:06

One local secondary has shorts round here and they do get worn.

So why did the OP then write this:

........it looks like a big deal because it makes headlines literally every year. Makes teachers look like idiots. So what is any logical reason to not allow shorts?

It does look as though she meant "shorts".

Persephoknee · 24/06/2025 12:15

This is tremendously creepy.

SixteenClovesOfGarlic · 24/06/2025 12:17

Can you ask MN to edit your OP? The title and then zero context or info in the post aren't really condusive to getting many replies.

(Just noticed the thread is 4 days old)

Needmorelego · 24/06/2025 12:41

@CatsArePeople yes I agree with you.
Every year boys do this to make a point that trousers are too hot and shorts aren't on the uniform list - but obviously skirts are.
Good for them !
If schools allowed shorts then they wouldn't have to make this point.

Needmorelego · 24/06/2025 12:44

Persephoknee · 24/06/2025 12:15

This is tremendously creepy.

No it isn't.
The OP is talking about what has become an annual protest from secondary age boys about not being able to wear the more summer suitable school uniform as shorts are not allowed.
All schools need to do is let them wear frigging shorts.
🙄
