2 weeks might as well be 2 years in the Trump consciousness.

Are we there yet?

logicisall · 19/06/2025 22:53

Re '2 weeks', Trump appears to struggle with both time and numbers given that he thinks Pakistan and India have been fighting for 'a thousand years'.

That’s not even the worst bit of that press conference. He asked the people who put up the flagpole if they were illegal part way through it and then told them the press conference would ruin their lives if they were.

The Los Angeles Dodgers say they have denied entry to ICE agents who arrived at the stadium and "requested permission to access the parking lots."

On the 18th my wonderful LA Dodgers said they'd be announcing plans to 'assist the immigrant community impacted by the recent events in Los Angeles'.

Then on the 19th ICE agents tried to gain entry to the stadium but were denied entry by the team.

There's a reason I bleed Dodger Blue.

For those without a Telegraph sub.

Britain and Europe have warned Donald Trump that any US attack on Iran risks endangering Westerners being held by the Islamic Republic.
Diplomatic sources told The Telegraph that Washington had also been told that military intervention could trigger a wave of terror attacks by sleeper cells across Europe.

I know this POV will.not be popular but If you start grumbling about other countries' policies, modifying your own policies , or even contemplating modifying your foreign policy due to the risk of sleeper cells at home then just maybe those contemplating direct action against the sponsoring state have a point.

Also if there is a high risk you also have to look at your own internal security set up...

I have a some sympathy for those held in Iran, most especaiilyntye dual nationals, but some who have been imprisoned do seem to have been somewhat naive.

It still beggars belief that we are all being held hostage by someone whose grasp of coherent dialogue is equivalent to that of a 3 year old. (Apologies to 3 year olds)

Back to Drumpf's two weeks unit of time... (needs a special name as 'fortnight' isn't used in the US)

from NYT:
For Trump, ‘Two Weeks’ Is the Magic Number
“Two weeks” is one of President Trump’s favorite units of time. It can mean something, or nothing at all.

Within the next two weeks.”
That is when President Trump now says he will be ready to make his decision about bombing Iran or not. This new timeline was offered by the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt at her briefing Thursday afternoon. But as she read the president’s statement aloud, some in the room couldn’t help but feel that this new time frame sounded a little … familiar.
As almost everyone in Washington is by now aware, “two weeks” is one of Mr. Trump’s favorite units of time.
^^
Asked eight weeks ago if he could trust Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, Mr. Trump replied, “I’ll let you know in about two weeks.”
Tax plans, health care policies, evidence of conspiracy theories he claimed were true, the fight against ISIS, the opening of some coal mines, infrastructure plans — all were at one point or another riddles he promised to solve for the public in about two weeks.
^^
It is a slippery thing, this two weeks — not a measurement of time so much as a placeholder. Two weeks for Mr. Trump can mean something, or nothing at all. It is both a yes and a no. It is delaying while at the same time scheduling. It is not an objective unit of time, it is a subjective unit of time. It is completely divorced from any sense of chronology. It simply means later. But later can also mean never. Sometimes.
^^
A reporter in the briefing room tried to bring Mr. Trump’s timeline into our shared space time continuum but the White House didn’t seem ready for that voyage.
^^
“President Trump has said previously, in regard to Russia, he’s used the phrase ‘about two weeks’ several times, in terms of, like, ‘We expect a two week deadline,’ and then he’ll give another two week deadline,” the reporter said to Ms. Leavitt. “How can we be sure he’s going to stick to this one on making a decision on Iran?”
^^
Ms. Leavitt basically replied that one thing can’t be compared with another.
This was really a question of metaphysics more than anything else.

Interesting that Trump thinks he can declare war on Iran. Constitutionally, that’s Congress’ job.

But as we are learning, Congress seems to have given those powers to the executive.

Incidentally, if I can find this, how come the BBC* can't ?

He doesn't care. And they know it.

That wasn't aimed at Trump. That was preparing the ground back home for bad news.

Come on now. There might be important flag poles to erect. You can’t be expecting him to be attending summits all the time.

The UK government knows the British public will happy accept being bombed if the messaging is right.

And anyway, we've lived for years in the shadow of being targets for retributions against the US. This really is just business as usual.

I know Parliament is discussing assisted dying, but being bombed by Iran wasn't really the way I thought it would go...

They can't fly bombers overhead.

And the idea they have crack teams of sleeper cells ready to go at moments notice doesn't really stand up to a moments contact with reality. This isn't a Dan Brown offering.

If there is any backlash, it will be from unofficial self-appointed troublemakers. Not some dastardly organised operation.

I'd be really careful of just blowing this off as all a bit Tom Clancey/ Dan Brown/politicians messaging justification for strikes.

You don't have to look too far back in history to see examples of para-military units operating under cover on the UK mainland and in Europe, so it has happened, and there are at least three Iranian nationals being held ATM after what appears to have been an intelligence led operation a few weeks ago.

I've lived through "para-military units operating under cover on the UK mainland" for the better part of 30 years. Maybe that's coloring my judgement ?

So did so maybe likewise.

Fundamentally I think we need to be wary of a "reds under the beds" type scare due to messaging from whoever, but I don't think that means we should write the threat off as being completley ficticious..

The real truth is there has not been a year in recorded history when Britain in some form or other hasn't been under threat. The number has never been zero.

Not so much now either, tbh.

I agree.
Re the Trumpidiot’s ‘two weeks’ response to everything, I suspect:

  1. he can’t count to more than two
  2. his memory span is around 48 hours so he assumes everyone else’s is t same.
God help America while he’s in office.

Re 'reds under the beds'. Anti-gov't groups are operating out in the open as seen in their latest iteration at Brize Norton.
