I'm still trying to figure out the SCOTUS decision 'on birthright citizenship'. Their decision didn't actually address that specific issue but rather with federal judges' ability to block executive orders. It sounds as if it's more about giving POTUS unrestricted power and eliminating checks and balances.

As soon as their decision came down, appeals were filed. I have no idea what or where the appeals are about since I thought a SCOTUS decision wasn't really appealable.

My problem is that the doing away with birthright citizenship issue upsets me so much that I have to stop my research.

I think this analysis explains it. But it's an incredibly depressing development and will seemingly cause much confusion.

Courts Will Have to Grapple With New Limits on Their Power
The Supreme Court has set a new, higher bar for judges seeking to block Trump administration policies nationwide. But some legal routes remain open.

@Spandauer that mattress advert is hilarious 🤣

AcrossthePond55 · 28/06/2025 21:06

@Spandauer

Good God, what a mess! Their decision will create even more confusion and lawsuits.

The best we can hope for is that this gets tied up in litigation until Jan 2029. I know, faint hope. But better than none.

Yes, I think that’s the crux, @ChubbyMorticia, the fact that Canada tends to import more luxury goods from the USA than what we might call “necessities”. Though how will Canada fare without that ready market for the basics that is the USA, I wonder?

We’re already establishing new trade partners.

And the thing is? This isn’t going to be temporary. We won’t cancel new partnerships to go back to the US, even if the current administration is thrown out.

The lesson has been learned and won’t be forgotten.

Thousands of people lined up at the Minnesota Capitol to pay tribute to slain lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Between the caskets was an urn containing the ashes of the family’s golden retriever, Gilbert.

Tim Walz eulogizes slain lawmaker as a historic Minnesotan — and friend

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz sat in a front pew during Melissa and Mark Hortman’s funeral alongside former president Joe Biden and former vice president Kamala Harris.

I wish it was that easy- offer community and truth to get them back.

We managed to maintain a loving relationship by agreeing to disagree, and ignoring contentious subjects. For me, the lack of adoration by voiced for Trump, Farage, Tommy 10 names is a win, but the bigger win is not having to hear the demonisation of those on the left. The more overt and ridiculous Trump is being, the less I hear about how great he is.

It's a long and difficult road back, and full of false hope where they start to see the truth, then get caught in the next wave of bollocks and dragged back in.

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2025 14:19

The 'Big Beautiful Bill' is going through the senate at the moment, they are about 10 hours in reading the 940 pages.

Spandauer · 29/06/2025 15:10

I saw somewhere that it was being read out to an empty room? Don't know if that's true.

But read that earlier the usual GOP 'rebels' did their usual posturing and uttered their usual squeaks of 'concern' then proceeded to vote 'yes' to proceed with the bill. After a handful of them got bribes concessions for their own states or gave in to Trump's threats.

Did anyone listen to 'The Mooch' on Tom Swarbrick (LBC) today? He thinks Putin/Russia has some sort of kompromat on Trump.
It's 4pm to 5pm if anyone wants to hear it on catch up.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 30/06/2025 17:38

Quelle surprise!

Not overly fond of Swarbrick or Mooch but will sacrifice myself for the cause, thank you, @Mrsbloggz.

Mrsbloggz · 30/06/2025 17:41

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom , I share your feelings on Mooch & Swarbrick but I cant help feeling Mooch has good insight into Trump.

SerendipityJane · 30/06/2025 17:53

He thinks Putin/Russia has some sort of kompromat on Trump.

Bollocks.

There is nothing that the American public can be told about Trump that would cause him any problems.

Feel free to suggest what it may be. Remember fake news and all that.

Q: "You mentioned the dangerous wildlife at Alligator Alcatraz. Is that a design feature?"

Leavitt: "When you have illegal murderers and rapists and heinous criminals in a detention center surrounded by alligators, yes I do think that's a deterrent."

What's a legal murderer?

What's a legal murderer?

Anyone who administers the death penalty.

Damnbrsatz · 30/06/2025 21:15

Yes, I only found out recently that anyone put to death via the death penalty, their cause of death is recorded as legal homicide!

YankTank · 30/06/2025 21:37

“Illegal” murderers are illegal immigrants who have committed murders. She added rapists right after, so I’m sure she meant illegal murderers and illegal rapists—some of the old DJT tropes to get the audience at home whipped into a frenzy.
