I’m not sure. This is horrifying. It’s not safe to expect women to unilaterally make their accounts public. And it’s a slippery slope…first they trial it with student visas, then visitor ESTAs, then US citizens when they apply for drivers licenses or passports or birth certificates for their babies…

And this is clearly the most important and necessary invasion of privacy required in a so-called democracy which supposedly holds freedom of speech dear. Far more important than helping people out of poverty, improving the medical system and education, making sure children are properly vaccinated against childhood diseases, allowing women the right to control their bodies. Talk about upside down priorities. (What a surprise, we won’t be visiting the US from over the nearby border on our summer holiday this year.)

Well this just got…interesting. So this is non immigrant visas….F (student), M (vocational study), J (work or study exchange). They have to set their SM accounts to PUBLIC. Sorry…I have my SM locked down tight (family/close friends only) for legitimate privacy reasons, not because I’m a terrorist. THIS IS NUTS.

Presumably these rules will also apply to politicians and officials visiting the US too ?

So Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch will have to make their profiles public ?

Or will there be "secret" exemptions ?

Maybe the EU should do the same for US visitors ?

Not yet…only student visa applicants (for now).

Why pay to study in the US when you can visit Russia for free ?

Meanwhile I see SCOTUS has had it's tummy tickled.

FFS. He’s deliberately destroying the basis on which the country was founded. He is disgusting.

So will the USA become disunited, one country on the outskirts (mostly) and the rest in the middle (mostly)?

If I worked in compliance, I'd advise against any deals with US companies now that there appears to be no legal backstop. Better now than in 2 years time

I'd also be questioning the adequacy rules.

I’m sorry, could you kindly explain that in this context, please? It’s a long time since I worked anywhere even remotely connected to the financial sector and I’m afraid I have no idea what this means. Sorry to be such a nuisance and so ignorant.

As best as I understand them.
Not all countries have gdpr, Europe does, and our gdpr rules match theirs so data can be shared.

For other countries, if they can show that their rules are good enough, they can be covered by adequacy. This means data can flow easily between them.

Then there are countries not covered by either, so you have to do your own checks.

I'm wondering how long before the USA is reassessed.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part, but I think the Canadians will do better without trade with the USA than vice versa.

The main difference between Canada and the US in trade is that we (Canada) export mainly materials and necessities. We import a lot of luxuries. Many Canadians have significantly turned away from US products.

Despite the decrepit carrot claiming to hold all the cards, we sell a large amount of electricity, oil, potash, lumber, steel, etc.

Good luck if the borders close and all trade ceases.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 28/06/2025 08:24

Yes, I think that’s the crux, @ChubbyMorticia, the fact that Canada tends to import more luxury goods from the USA than what we might call “necessities”. Though how will Canada fare without that ready market for the basics that is the USA, I wonder?

I have an echo of Brexiteers blathering on about "WTO rules".

However, it is interesting that the US could end up simply not being able to make any "deals" ? Imagine if Canada or the EU or China said "Thanks for the offer, but we're good." ?

logicisall · 28/06/2025 10:48

@SerendipityJane That would be my dream come true.🤞

"But I've got all the cards!" He squealed. Maybe, Bigly, but I think you'll find that you had all the cards. I fear you're unacquainted with some basic rules of gameplay which is surprising in someone of your age. Writing your own rules in defiance of practice is not to be recommended and unlikely to lead to A Bigly Win.
