And what are the rules?
We've gone beyond Uno but don't have a game that we all 4 play together.
Thanks

DS1 taught me 'Poohead' (bless the days he didn't want to swear in the house). But we've since forgotten how to play.

Our favourite is Predict Whist
Capitalism for a big group
Pistachio
Hearts (forgotten rules)
Poker

3 face down, 3 on top face up, 3 in your hand. Ace high, 3 low. 2 on anything resets, 10 clears the pile, as does 4 of a kind. Bottom 3 played blind once pile and top 3 gone.

sparklychair · 05/06/2025 22:31

We often used to play Newmarket - kept a pot full of pennies to use for the bets.

Awumminnscotland · 05/06/2025 22:43

Whist
Pontoon
Specific games that are card games:
Uno
Sleeping queens
Sleeping queens 2
Dragonwood
Crew in a stew( timestables but with pirates)

Oh forgot Dobble and it's copy cat ones

A colour game I've forgotten the name of

Muddles...you mix up animals and get new animals...silly fun

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 05/06/2025 22:49

For those that suggested skyjo, you mighy also like 5 crowns.

mynameiscalypso · 05/06/2025 22:55

We play what we call ‘10 to 1’ but I think is the same as prediction/nomination whist that others have referred to.

Ellie Dix shows you how to play the card game Newmarket. Newmarket is a game of luck which revolves around betting money on four horses.

Monopoly Deal is a big hit with our kids at the moment, as is Exploding/Zombie Kittens.

SophiaSW1 · 05/06/2025 23:14

UNO and dobble

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/06/2025 23:16

Chase the Ace
Newmarket

Sergeant Major
Cribbage
Matrimony
31s
Rummy
Snap
Pig

I don't enjoy poker though.

Chasingsquirrels · 05/06/2025 23:31

As they progressed in age

Snap
Strip Jack naked
Newmarket
Ma, Pa & the Kid
Knock out Whist (with a dogs chance - that's an addition from my late-DH).
Crib
9 (and then 15) card Brag
Poker
10 card rummy
German Whist
10s
Black Queen

Still play 10s & Black Queen after Sunday roast with the grandparents if they are around (19 & 22), and they'll play Crib, Brag or German Whist with me.

I used to play Canasta with my parents and a boyfriend when I was about 17-19.

mathanxiety · 06/06/2025 03:56

German whist

FurForksSake · 06/06/2025 10:37

Is there a good website where I can print out rules for some of these or would I be better with a book? I’m laid up at the moment and this could be a nice pastime I can do with the kids.

We sometimes add a blind dogs chance. One card you can't see but can play with your fingers crossed anytime.

I'd forgotten strip jack naked, thank you I'm going to look that up.

TravellingSpoon · 07/06/2025 08:10

We play King of Slaves which is complicated but good fun.
And Rummy.

Blimeyblighty · 07/06/2025 08:28

we play Racing Demon (you need a pack of cards each and a minimum of 4 players - the more the better)

Rubbish (also called Trash/Garbage if you google for the rules)

Chase the Ace

Crazy 8s (which is basically UNO with a pack of cards)

Oneofeachclub · 07/06/2025 08:40

Perudo is great. We learnt it on HMS Victory in Portsmouth and bought it straight after!
Edited as realised it's not a card game but is really good all the same and great for holidays!

Bumpinthenight · 07/06/2025 08:46

We had three 17 year olds here last night and they played:

Uno
Uno Flip
Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

lots of screams and laughter!

As a family, we also like:

Exploding Kittens
Avocado Smash
Dobble
Phase 10 (this comes on holiday with us without fail)

With a normal pack of cards:
Shithead
Rummy
Chase the Ace

KingscoteStaff · 07/06/2025 09:01

I am just back from Year 6 PGL trip and it was fascinating to watch the kids from card-playing families teaching the games to their friends! We had beautiful sunny evenings before bed and there would be 4 or 5 little groups sitting out on the grass playing.
Most popular were…
Uno + UNO flip
Dobble
RatatatCat (I notice 2 initiates have now bought their own packs)
SushiGo
Exploding Kittens
and good old Beggar my Neighbour!

Chasingsquirrels · 07/06/2025 11:08

My 19yo has recently been to Budapest with a non-card playing friend, he brought a pack of cards whilst there and taught her a couple of games.
And both dc have included their gf's into our family Sunday roast followed by cards evenings.

NCfor24 · 07/06/2025 11:13

As a teen I played Canasta all the time with my siblings and mum. I have no clue about the rules now.
Not a card game but we like Yahtzee with our tweens.
The kids also love Uno and it's variations. We always take a few card type games on holiday but then forget to play them!

We love nomination whist. I wonder if it’s the same as predict whist…we love card games.

Chasingsquirrels · 07/06/2025 11:27

Nomination Whist sounds similar to a game we refer to as 10s.

1st round - 10 cards each, hearts are trumps, go round the table from the dealer and call how many tricks you'll think you'll win (N). Marked on the score sheet as 10 + N, ie 2 tricks = 12. Play out the hands. If you are wrong your score gets crossed out.

2nd round - 9 cards each, clubs are trumps.
Etc down to 1 card each.

Winner is the highest score.

Some variations play it that the last score caller can't make the total correct for that round.

Added bonus in our family, if you get all 10 rounds correct you win a tie from my dad's (no longer so extensive) collection. I've no idea how this started! At my house you now win a tie from my late DHs (still quite extensive) collection.

Chasingsquirrels · 07/06/2025 11:30

Oh, I used to enjoy Solo Whist as well.
And there is an easier version for kids with less cards, can't remember what that was.

Edit: Napoleon or Nap!
