How bad is -4 in both eyes?

WiseBearOrMare · 31/05/2025 22:18

I know I need glasses. But don’t think it’s THAT bad. I can see okay without, just no loads of detail

Really random post. Off the back of a friend who works at Specsavers and gasped when I told her but was walking around without my specs (they were in my car)

I’m completely blind in one eye and -2 for reading in the other, I get by okay unless I need to read anything.

I know it’s not for you but I find it fascinating that you say that! That’s amazing that you can get by like that

Can you drive?

I’m -3.5 in both eyes and can’t see shit. So yes it’s bad and you need to wear your glasses.

I’m -4 and can’t see enough to function without glasses.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/05/2025 22:30

What on earth! Wear glasses!! You are a hazard!

newrubylane · 31/05/2025 22:32

I'm -3.75 and I could just about function walking around but it would be quite stressful and I'd probably end up with a headache.

BatFaceChops · 31/05/2025 22:32

I’m minus 9 in one eye and minus 8 in the other. To me, you have perfect eyesight 🤣🤣🤣

No, you clearly need glasses

cheesycheesy · 31/05/2025 22:33

I’m -3 in one eye and -4 in the other. There’s no way I could see properly without contact lenses. It would be a hazard

whatcoulditbee · 31/05/2025 22:33

At -4 you definitely shouldn't be walking around without glasses. 😅

Tarantella6 · 31/05/2025 22:34

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to be able to see properly? That's very weird.

I'm -8 and I don't even get out of bed without glasses on 😅

Don’t you find glasses are like looking into a fishbowl at that prescription? I’m -3 and -4 and get so dizzy with glasses on. I wear contacts most of the time.

IndieRocknRoll · 31/05/2025 22:35

I think as it’s in both eyes it’s fairly significant overall. I have +3.25 in one and +6.50 in the other. One good eye can compensate for the other being bad, meaning little impact in overall vision. I wear glasses though to support my good eye, reduce strain etc but can function ok without them if I need to for short periods. In your case they are both poor so I imagine it would have quite an impact on your overall vision. You definitely need glasses or contacts.

PleaseAndThankYou12 · 31/05/2025 22:35

I’m -4.5 and -4.75… before I even put my feet on the bedroom floor, I reach for my glasses! I can just about make out shapes of things without mine. I definitely couldn’t get myself round a shop without wearing glasses or contacts!

853ax · 31/05/2025 22:35

About -2 here and I find it very frustrating without my glasses on saying that it's very very rare I'm not wearing them while awake
Can't imagine how you anything without them at -4

WiseBearOrMare · 31/05/2025 22:36

Interesting, thank you. I definitely don’t feel like I’m hazardous without them! Although would 100.% never ever drive without them (it’s illegal anyway), my eyesight seems 100 times worse driving! If I was parked up and looked into the distance, it feels a lot more incapacitating than going about my everyday life

I am going to try wearing them all the time. I’d only ever usually do so if I was looking at a presentation or something and couldn’t choose to sit at the front

They feel weird on my face. I’ve tried a few. Maybe contacts are my friend

I'm -5 in one eye (worse in the other). No way could I even see that a friend was in the room let alone who they were with my good eye.

Same. I don't even go to the toilet in the night without putting my glasses on.

CatteryCatz · 31/05/2025 22:37

I’m 29 with -4.50 in both eyes. I can’t do anything without my glasses!

No I can’t drive, I’ve been blind in one eye since birth so don’t know any different. I was concerned when I started needing reading glasses but the optician said a -2 is pretty standard over 40. I went to school with a woman who is completely blind and death in one ear. Goes to work everyday using the Ldn underground and runs the London marathon every year, I find that very inspiring.

You get used to whichever one you wear most so when I put contacts in I'm staggering around like I'm drunk for 20 minutes or so until my brain adjusts.

But also maybe your glasses are not quite right and you are not looking through the right bit of the lens

witwatwoo · 31/05/2025 22:39

I was -7 before laser surgery, I’m now +2 !

They are expensive but you can get nice glasses.
I am far worse than 4 but few notice.

Did they mess your prescription up with the surgery or did your eyes just get worse with age anyway?

Yes I need to get another pair of glasses. My current pair are way too old and I rely on contacts too much. It’s ok unless I get an infection!

AmyDuPlantier · 31/05/2025 22:42

I’m -2.75 and can’t see shit. You absolutely should be wearing lenses or glasses; please tell me you don’t drive!
